AIBU sleeping arrangement

I’m visiting my parents this weekend, as are my 2 sisters (we’re all adults 23,29 and 32). I’m bringing my husband, sisters are going alone. I’m currently 19 weeks pregnant with twins, this is relevant.
all the bedrooms have a single bed in them, prior to pregnancy id just share with my husband and we’d have a bad nights sleep but get over it. Now im pregnant sleeping is a bit more uncomfortable and I need a pillow under my belly etc. so someone has to sleep on the sofa. I can’t make hubby sleep on the sofa because the living room is the walk way through to the kitchen so he’d have no privacy. So the options are for pregnant me or my sisters to go on the sofa. I’ve asked both my sisters if they’d give their bed up for me, they’ve both said no. My one sister even had a tantrum over it and said she just won’t visit if I’m going to take “her” bed (bear in mind she hasn’t lived at my parents house for 7 years).
I’m feeling a little disappointed in my sisters and that they wouldn’t let their pregnant sister have a bed for a weekend. My parents have offered their bed to my husband and I as a result but it doesn’t seem fair as they are both older and need the bed too.
Am I being unreasonable expecting someone to give up a bed for me? I would never ask at any other time in my life, it’s just one weekend during my pregnancy.

Why dont you book a hotel or AirBNB nearby?

Why not read OPs answers?

Because that would fix the problem and OP wouldn't be able to moan about it 😂 if she's this precious when pregnant I feel sorry for her family 😂

no not at all, that isn’t it! It’s nothing to do with my husband deserving better. My sisters both lived at the house their whole lives, the whole family is pretty comfortable together so sleeping in a communal room isn’t an issue but hubby isn’t going to be as comfortable as the rest of us in that situation.
im not putting my husband above them in anyway, I’m just trying to make sure he feels welcome and has a private space

You are prioritising YOUR preference for your husband to have privacy over your sisters having their privacy.
TBH this all sounds extremely childish. You are pregnant. Get a hotel, or go on your own this time.
TBH when your twins arrive you are going to have to make other arrangements when you visit because the house is too small to accommodate you all anyway, so why not start now?

Seasidewalker · 30/08/2026 15:09

As others I struggle to see how a room can be so small that there isn't enough room for someone to sleep on the floor next to the bed. Self inflating mattresses can be quite compact and comfy.

We have a small room which we have put wardrobes in as the main bedroom doesn't have room for storage. We took the permanent beds out (used to be 2 singles which we pushed together if appropriate. We now. We have kept one single in the loft which we put together if we need the room (elderly relative who needs a standard bed) , alternatively we have two Z beds or we put an airbed or SIMs in there depending on who is using the room, it's much more flexible that way. Your parents need to consider how their rooms work for the family now everyone is older. Moving doesn't have to be the only option - look at the space and how the current furniture works or doesn't work, also to consider if they need to declutter.

I'd also depersonalise rooms so that nobody feels they have a right to any particular space!

pipthomson · 30/08/2026 14:39

What about a luxury yurt in the garden -you can hire for the duration one of the others may prefer to have space and it would free up an extra room…everyone would be onsite and not excluded by being off-site

Shinyandnew1 · 30/08/2026 12:35

I would say this is a pretty one off and unusual situation.

You have to go to see an unwell relative.

Your sisters have to go the exact same time (presumably as it’s the Bank Hol, so better to travel for longer)

Your parents’ house has had an unusual change of layout meaning it has a double room for your parents and three box rooms. You are aghast that people struggled with this, but you didn’t explain it to begin with, and it is unusual.

You can’t afford a hotel.

You can’t drive yourself.

It’s too far for him to drive you and drop you off.

You have fainted, so can’t travel on the train.

Your DH sleeping in the sofa or the pair of you sleeping together in the lounge room on a double airbed/mattress is the best bet, especially as you are bringing your dogs which will need to be let out into the garden. By you/DH.

As you’re having twins, your plans for staying there will have to change anyway.

Whinging about him needing privacy means you are ruling out about the only possible solution, other than forcing your sisters to give up their beds. It feels like you are creating a situation here.

If your sister slept on the sofa, your husband would have to wake her up and invade her privacy when he’s letting his dogs out anyway, so it makes sense for him to be on the sofa, dogs in with him and he’s up early to sort the dogs and dressed by the time everyone else is awake.

You are all guests in that house and you all deserve privacy. It's your problem, so you need to solve it.

You could buy a Jaybe bed for your husband to sleep on. They aren't expensive and they're very comfortable. It will come in useful for visits when your baby is born too.

Where are you suggesting she puts it?

SinisterGreenMan · 30/08/2026 11:55

strawberrylemons · 28/08/2026 10:17

He wouldn’t walk through, it’s not his house, but the family will get up in the morning to let dogs out etc. he’s a guest in that house so I don’t feel it’s right for him not to have the privacy, he’s not refused, he doesn’t even know the situation. I want him to feel comfortable in the family home that’s all

I wonder where the OP spent the last 2 nights 😂

Maybe on a blow up bed on the floor “runs”

strawberrylemons · 28/08/2026 10:31

Yes, honestly, none of them will fit an airbed, my parents know it’s an issue and it comes up when we all get together but nothing can be done unless they move house. It’s really not that unusual, it’s a 3 bed house that they added an additional room to so we could all have our own bedroom. Not everyone lives in a nice big spacious house with multiple double rooms

I find this hard to believe unless the single bed in the room is massive. I grew up in the box room of a three bed council house and before we moved in someone had moved the wall to make the double bedroom larger and I could still fit a small air mattress in there. It would mean possibly standing on the air mattress to get to the single bed and it wouldn't be ideal it but would fit.

Pinkchickenwine · 30/08/2026 10:55

MzHz · 30/08/2026 10:46

She was sharing with either me or my sister, so no inconvenience, but the tiny single bed just wasn’t big enough for a heavily pg woman to sleep in. I suggested I share, she went ballistic

my suggestion was no more heinous than the suggestion of my sister sharing.

i didn’t tantrum, i asked. My mother was totally irrational about it.

i slept in one of the twins having pushed the other bed closer for the pillow for the belly.

as I said, it was the beginning of the end of our relationship and it got lots worse. She deliberately hurt my son in the end.

I get that I’m projecting, I’m NC with her now, but op is not unreasonable to say she needs more space, and her sisters are being selfish.

Why would someone who u getting married the next day want to “sleep” in a bed with someone up and down to the toilet all night?

I think you were being selfish.

NewHere83 · 30/08/2026 10:48

You don't think it was up to your mother to choose who she shared with the night before her wedding?

MzHz · 30/08/2026 10:46

NewHere83 · 29/08/2026 23:20

And you think that what you wanted should have taken priority over what she wanted, the night before her wedding? You had a bed, it's not like they were suggesting you sleep on the floor.

You say I know I may seem entitled and precious expecting someone to give up a bed for me while I’m pregnant but that's not it really. It's expecting someone to give up a bed for your husband. Not the same thing at all.

This.

You are requiting your sisters to give up a bed for your DH, not you. Your "right" to a bed has never been your question: you just assumed it.

You assumed something as your right & your husband's right which you've denied your sister. In her own parents' home ....

anaconda1831 · 30/08/2026 09:44

I think your sisters are being very selfish. You are pregnant and need 1) your husband to drive you to be comfortable and 2) a proper bed. I agree that I would give up a bed in a heartbeat for someone in this situation and to avoid the person who is least intimate with the rest of the family having to sleep in a communal space.

its absolutely bizarre that so many people don't think the house set up is genuine when it's a normal sized family home, you shouldn't have to explain this more than once

Exactly. OP's manipulative martyrdom is as transparent as anything. I presume OP's sisters are used to her manipulative ways, can see straight through her, and that's why they are, quite rightly, standing their ground.

NewHere83 · 29/08/2026 23:20

WildLeader · 29/08/2026 07:47

Nope, did you read my post

when we went into the room, my sister went straight to the double bed, I suggested that I should share as it’s closer to the loo, I was huge etc but my mum had the tantrum and shared with my sister while I went to the single room

so she was sharing either way.

as I said, this was the tip of a very big iceberg that surfaced when I got pregnant

And you think that what you wanted should have taken priority over what she wanted, the night before her wedding? You had a bed, it's not like they were suggesting you sleep on the floor.

AllIneedAreMyFamilyandDogs · 29/08/2026 23:05

I just can't fathom the idea that a son-in-law is a guest. He's family, surely? Isn't that the point of getting married, to join the family?

I imagine your dh would feel acutely embarrassed having a bed at the expense of his dsil.

He should sleep on the sofa or make do on whatever floor there is in the bedroom, even if there isn't room for an airbed he might be able to fit in on the floor with a sleeping bag.

Ultimately, it is first and foremost the responsibility of your partner to make sacrifices for his pregnant wife, before more distance family members have to. Sleeping of the sofa doesn't seem like a terrible hardship to me. I'd expect a caring partner to be willing to do that.

Exactly this. My son in law is part of the family. I guess I'm more modest around him than I would be around my sons (I feel comfortable just wearing a nightie around my sons (it's just boring flannel type nightie), while I'll put a dressing gown on over a nightie if my son in law is here). Otherwise, he's part of the family in every way and I'm sure he likes it that way. Luckily, he's also not precious.

GoldTie · 29/08/2026 20:55

This is just for 2 nights? Guess it’s settled as you’re there now but I’ll comment as I’ve for some reason read the whole thread.

The way you treat your DH as a guest is by him being on the couch and everyone going to bed at a reasonable hour, and not disturbing him early. At least some of the dogs are his so obviously he can let them all out. You could have then done the second night at a hotel, to make sure he got enough sleep for the 5 hour drive back, pretty sure you could afford that. No way should your sister have given your DH a room.

FunkyFringe · 29/08/2026 20:38

strawberrylemons · 28/08/2026 13:18

I was shocked by how many people think I’m being unreasonable, some people have a selfish attitude of “it’s not my problem so why should I make a sacrifice” where has this come from? even my sweet old nan (in her 90s) offered me her bed at her house saying she’d sleep on the recliner 😂
I know I may seem entitled and precious expecting someone to give up a bed for me while I’m pregnant but it’s one of those things I wouldn’t even have to think about if it were the other way round, which is why I didn’t think it would be an issue but it’s clearly upset a lot of people!

Farmwifefarmlife · 29/08/2026 20:29

I’d say hubby has to take the sofa.

lev2002 · 29/08/2026 20:23

I think YANBU mainly because your views on guests seems to be how you've been raised and your family values. You've went without a bed to help out sisters husband's and they were perfectly happy with it then. But you can't change their mind, id think twice about giving up my bed in the future! Although I'm guessing this won't be an issue given upcoming changes with twins.

Unless you literally have no money to afford anything other than the most basic or cheapest version of absolutely everything and only buy essentials, then everyone who says they can't afford something means this.

Agree - no idea what being able to ‘afford’ something means. Everyone has a different definition, unless they are completely skint and mean it literally.
