The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments. Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room. Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

I completely agree with you OP, I have taken to not very subtle muttering so that these idiots hear me.

I was in a garden center recently and there were a few people with their dogs wandering along beside them as though they were on a walk in the woods, entitled idiots should leave them at home. It is always a certain type of dog too, yappy small dogs in the main.

I have a dog who has no more interest in shopping than I do and therefore stays at home.

Many garden centres allow dogs because they often sell pet stuff.
How can the dogs be "wandering" and be beside their owner at the same time?

Sure, but you don't see all the dogs walking elsewhere or the dogs walking at different times. You know the dogs that walk where you walk at the same time as you walk, that is all, and it will be a miniscule percentage of the dogs being walked in your area.

If you walked your dog you see the same faces on the same walks. It's called routine, everyone has one. You get to know other dog walkers. This should not be new information, unless you spend your time in cafes of course.

I do walk my dog, a fair amount as well, but we have no routine to it so don't see the same people or dogs.

Restaurants are generally ‘safer’ than cafes though if you want to avoid dogs.

Though I think a thread on dogs on public transport is needed next. Anyone?!

Maybe not but if we can keep reminding some dog owners that they should be walking their dogs and not just have them on a short lead in a crowded cafe then it may make some think twice.

They like peace and quiet they like to be with their owners yes but not a load of shouting strangers too.

I think dog trainers can help those that haven't bothered in how to help their dog feel safe at home so they can be left for periods of time. Or online info?

@Gloriia - how do you know that the owners of dogs in cafes are not getting walked? Unless they are in the cafe 24/7, there are a lot of other hours in the day when the dog might be getting plenty of walks. Taking a dog to a cafe isn’t an alternative to walking them, it is another activity altogether.

They just need to be properly looked after. The other week a woman had one dog on its lead, which was fine. She let the other dog walk freely up and down the tube carriage, as it nuzzled people’s legs and bags on the floor. Very odd. If nothing else, I wondered why she wasn’t worried about the safety of the little dog. It could have escaped between stations. Anyway, another thread I guess!

It is clearly confusing on occasion. Dog lovers on this thread have said that Gail’s and Pret are dogfree, when they aren’t. So perhaps the information isn’t always as clear for every venue.

I don’t think it is entitled for dog owners to want some dog friendly cafes and restaurants, @BlueFahrenheit - just as I don’t think it is entitled for people like you to want dog free establishments, that make their dog free status clear. Some on this thread have said that NO cafes/restaurants should allow any dogs - now that is as entitled as any dog owner who said their dog should be welcome everywhere.

@DuckDowned Agreed. I think it’s pretty rare for a dog to be allowed in a ‘decent’ restaurant. I do think country pubs are fair game though. Hope you have a lovely meal.

How is it unhygienic?
A responsible dog owner will have their dog settled on the floor and out the way. No barking or wandering about. Just minding their own business.
