Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

But people complaining about dogs merely existing in the approximately 10% of places that allow dogs are entitled twunts.

Whilst I don't think they should 'stay home', I definitely think they should stay out of specifically designated 'dog friendly' places if the existence of dogs offends them. And its up to them to do their research and choose appropriate venues, just as I do should I need to have my dog with me.

So you'd actually let your dog sit there licking its arsehole while people are trying to eat? Just wow.

How selfish, and you're wrong anyway. Most dog owners I know are considerate people and not the entitled kind who actually expect people to stay at home if they don't want to encounter dogs every single place they go, ffs. 🙄

It must depend where you live I reckon. I hardly ever see a dog in a pub/restuarant or whatever where I live but when I went to Devon they were everywhere. It doesnt bother me personally and I was glad of this as I did have my dog with me and it was too hot to leave her in the camper van on her own. It was the first time she had ever been in a pub (we did sit outside) and she just laid under the table and went to sleep. Actually we did sit in for dinner one night and again she just slept under the table. However, I would not allow her on chairs or where anyone else would want to sit as I don't think its respectful and much as I love and adore my girl, I do appreciate that others don't. Now I'm home it will be back to me leaving her at home when I go to these places as I am not one of these people who thinks my dog needs to come everywhere with me.

So yes, I do agree it's not very nice to go to eat and be surrounded by bum licking dogs but these establishments are just cashing in on the dog craziness that is going on. I think dogs should be allowed in some places, but back in the day there were specific places you could take your dog into whereas now it seems so many places are dog friendly.

Then you need to go to establishments that only allow guide dogs.

It's clearly not that unpopular to take dogs with you, based on this thread and the many others on which this topic has been done to death, and based on what you can see when out and about. I suspect the majority of people actually don't care much either way.

Dobermans are about the same size as labradors. They are medium - large dogs, not "massive".

If you feel that strongly about this topic then the onus is on you to seek out places that cater to your wants.

One of the issues as some have commented already is that dogs can lunge for other dogs, owners can let the lead go and the dog wanders around other people who are eating. They can be a trip hazard too if the leads are the extending type and people are carrying trays of tea.
There often is more than one dog per family. Two or three seem usual now.
They should not be on seats, nor on seats in public transport. The outside pub or cafe is not home so different rules should apply. And not fed leftovers on the plates humans eat from.
People who are unable to control their dog should get help with training too.

You don’t know that people are doing that as you see them for a snap second. I’ve popped into John Lewis with my dog but I’ve never been in town for longer than an hour or so with her as dogs aren’t allowed in most shops and she’s a hindrance in that respect. I don’t see many in town. 1 or 2 at the most.

I really don’t see the big deal about well-behaved dogs in restaurants. And I’m not a ‘dog person’ and I don’t have one. What’s so gross about it? If they’re sitting quietly and not licking the tables? How is it anymore gross than a human sitting near you?

I understand that people make a cafe stop part of their walk, that’s very different to someone taking their dog everytime they leave the house. Dogs don’t need to be wandering around John Lewis on a Saturday afternoon.

They have to exaggerate, otherwise their posts would be “saw a dog today”.

Popping into a cafe or restaurant does not mean you take your dog everywhere and they don’t get rest. That’s daft. Many pop into cafes on a walk or popping out for errands which is 1 or 2 hours in a day. Take my dog. It spent yesterday relaxing on the sofa in between sleeping in the sun in the garden and playing.It had a mid day walk/ run through woods and fields by our house. Had a bath, relaxed some more on the sofa whilst keeping an ear open for the postman then popped out for a couple of hours in the evening for dinner, had a mooch about after then home to bed. One of our favourite cafes is on a popular dog walk and we sometimes pop in for a cup of tea before a walk.Less than an hour. If I have to run to the post office she comes as they have treats on the counter sometimes take her if we have to pop into town for an hour. Tiny bursts of time.

Some one was using worms to feed birds and put the pot next to our table

I think that dogs in pubs are fine but should always remain on the floor, and there should be a designated area where dogs are allowed. That way people have a choice
I’m a dog owner and really don’t understand why people have to take their dog everywhere with them. It’s madness, dogs do need time to sleep, relax, they don’t need to sit on their owners knee when they have a hair cut, or go for a coffee.
But if you don’t want to eat near dogs, ask when you book, and choose somewhere else.

It’s dog owners keeping places afloat according to mn. Everywhere is wall to wall with them.

Luckily for you, you can go to the 90%+ of dog free eateries in the UK.

Dog owners are restricted to the less than 10% of dog friendly places. After having done our research, and picked a place that meets our needs, we don't need some entitled twunt complaining about our existence, when we're acting entirely reasonably and responsibly.

Don't want to share a space with dog? Don't go to dog friendly spaces then! It's not hard!

I don't think that every place loves the idea of having dogs, obviously there will be some

I think that some people like myself don’t have a massive issue but can be irritated by it, its not a great idea for posters to keep saying tough and go elsewhere. Pubs and cafes are closing for a variety of reasons and im pretty sure none of them are dog related but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be a reason in the future

local cafe years ago now had an issue with someone using their bowl to give their dog water, cafe objected….blew up on face book (as much as anything in a village does…though its a big village) with the cafe owners being called dog haters and demanding a boycott

The right thing is taking your dog into places that allow them and ensuring it’s well behaved for the duration. The right thing to do for people who don’t want to see a dog whist eating is to choose a place that doesn’t allow them. If you can’t find one, I’d say your stance on the matter is wrong and you should stop expecting the world to change on your whim.

It isn’t very unpopular otherwise restaurant and cafe owners wouldn’t be making their establishments dog friendly. They do it because it’s popular. Nearly half of families in the uk own a dog. With young adults( the ones who frequent cafes the most) it goes up to 68%. Many non dog owners don’t care. So you are in the minority as such maybe “do the right thing” and accept that.

I think pubs have always accepted dogs since the year dot haven't they?

I'm not bothered and way of the other about dogs as long as they're well behaved but on the plus side isn't exposure to dogs supposed to be good for developing immune systems in children? So in theory all the dogs in cafes etc could have a positive effect on child health 🙂

I'm not offended nor het up. I just don't want other people's dogs in cafes and restaurants. The more owners that understand how very unpopular it is the more hopefully will think twice and do the right thing.

On another thread we had a poster proudly say she took her dobermans with her! Imagine that sat having a nice evening out with a massive doberman at the next table. It's stupid and irresponsible.

Outdoor areas fine, indoor not. Even if the business is desperate for business you can still support them just leave your pets at home.

Not only that but the only things being mentioned are full on restaurants, takeaways and 1 pub

a lot of people on here are commenting on cafes and pubs, and also a lot are complaining about about dog owners not necessarily dogs themselves

I’d hope most people would be minding their own business rather than getting het up by something that, in the grand scheme of things, has no impact on their lives. Stop getting offended by people who do things different to you. It’s mad.

Wrong dogs overwhelmingly prefer to be with their owners, as they are deeply social pack animals wired for human companionship.

Also before I had a dog I rarely noticed other dogs in restaurants and still don’t. I only tend to when my dog wags her tail on passing one on our way out. Most customers don’tthink like you. Those that do can jog on to the many other places with owners who don’t want dogs. We have to respect their wishes, you do in dog friendly establishments. Such is life.

The comparison between children and dogs clearly gets a lot of people’s backs up. I think you’ve lost your crowd…..

Yes but it's a chat forum where opinions are shared it's kind of the whole point of it.

The main one being 'yeah but no but it's allowed'. Yes but many other customers don't like and many dogs would rather be tucked up at home so why do it.

Just know most customers who have done the sensible, kind thing and left their pet at home will be thinking ffs at a dog shoved in a corner, under a table or even worse perched on a customer's seat.
