Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

I completely agree with you OP, I have taken to not very subtle muttering so that these idiots hear me.

I was in a garden center recently and there were a few people with their dogs wandering along beside them as though they were on a walk in the woods, entitled idiots should leave them at home. It is always a certain type of dog too, yappy small dogs in the main.

I have a dog who has no more interest in shopping than I do and therefore stays at home.

My mum's greyhound has about 10 different regular walks that he enjoys. Some local, and some a car drive away. Some have a cafe there as part of them.
If we went by Gloriia's logic, she would be assuming he is not walked most of the time because she only sees him on one of his 10 routes.

I havent read all 1000 posts but the OPs description and some of the subsequent comments about these manky creatures has made me laugh.

I have 2 small dogs that are well-loved, clean, not slobbery, well-cared for, and don't regularly lick their genitals or arseholes in public. But I have no particular desire to take them to an eatery of any description. I'm of the generation where that simply wasn't normal, and I certainly can't be arsed with all the eye rolls and huffing of other patrons whilst I try to stop my dogs from moving around or making any sounds. Plus it's boring for the dogs, I'll leave them at home to relax and look out of the window instead.

It seems some people struggle to understand that all dogs are different. Some hate cafes, and some love them.

Sure, but you don't see all the dogs walking elsewhere or the dogs walking at different times. You know the dogs that walk where you walk at the same time as you walk, that is all, and it will be a miniscule percentage of the dogs being walked in your area.

Yes, you are right that when you're at home dogs and their owners have their dog walking routine. As already stated, we wouldn't take our current dog anywhere near a cafe or restaurant. We might have taken our old dog to a cafe when on holiday or somewhere out of our normal area and routine, where no one would recognise us. It certainly wouldn't have been the full extent of her walk!

I saw people on dog walks. I had no idea where else they were going.

One regular to the local cafe is a lovely brindle greyhound. Her owner always stops and has a coffee.
He also takes her elsewhere. Like a lot of dogs, she has several different walks to choose from.
I am not going to assume the only time she goes out is a few times a week to a cafe, because what I see is just a snapshot.

Dogs have always been allowed into country pubs.
In parts of the countryside if dogs were not allowed in all the pubs would close because they rely on the trade of dog walkers and country people with dogs.
My local pub often has more dogs than people and has allowed dogs for the 50 odd years I've been going in there.

Most town and city pubs have food areas where dogs are not allowed don't they? Wetherspoons - no dogs at all.

My dog has the best idyllic life. Occasionally she sits under a table for an hour or two. Shes not a princess and does not need very minutes of every day catering to her every whim.

And also, I'd hardly consider 78% of the vote on this thread, including actual dog owners, to be 'random MNers'. Your posts on this thread are clearly positioning you as that kind of dog owner - if you're happy with that, crack on, just know we see you.

I think a pub garden is fine, but not indoors unless in a very specific area cordoned off.

If you walked your dog you see the same faces on the same walks. It's called routine, everyone has one. You get to know other dog walkers. This should not be new information, unless you spend your time in cafes of course.

If you do take your dogs into restaurants, why so cagey about it?

Mn is full of moans. P&C spaces, mils, weddings. The list goes on. It is what it is!

No we cannot change everyone's bad behaviour but you never know someone may think 'ah yes I've got a dog! I should train it and look after it well, walk it not shove it under a table and i should put its welfare before my social life and coffee and cake'.

How do you know the people with their dogs in cafes are not walking them at other times?
How do you know that the people you see walking their dogs do not take them to cafes elsewhere?

You need to rtft, a pp did indeed say they couldn't leave their dog as it howls at home. That is a training issue.

Cafes, pubs and restaurants are noisy! Get more than a few people in one place and there is a noise. You may sit in silence but generally people chat, it's socialising. It can get loud.

People do substitute cafes for walks though, I see the same faces sat wirh their poor dog under a table and the same faces walking briskly with their dog (that doesn't go to cafes) on popular dog walks.

Most of these are dogs people got during Covid when everyone was at home. I reckon things will settle down once that generation of dogs start to die out. So that means another 10 years or so…

You can have your say but by it won’t change a thing so you probably do need to get over it really. Moaning isn’t going to change a thing. Establishment owners make business choices on earnings not what random MNers want. .

Yep, have done many a time. I recommend Dishoom in Battersea as our dog’s particular favourite!
