Pied à Terre, a Michelin-star French restaurant, goes so far as to have a canine-friendly menu for their four legged diners.

You can smell if someone has a dog or has had a dog in a room just like you can smell if someone's a smoker/had a fag. Doesn't make you dirty necessarily but it's pretty obvious isn't it?

I suggest you actually use Google before making a bold claim like that.

No restaurant with a Michelin Star is dog-friendly. Make of that what you will.

@BringBackCatsEyes - we have always left our dogs home alone - not regularly, and not all day, but they are perfectly happy if we go out for a few hours. I think it depends on the dog, but I also think it is something most dogs can learn.

Because they make more money from the other large group of people who do frequent them, and their sole reason for existing is to generate profit.

mrsm43 - dog owners certainly do try to take dogs into dog free places and have a childish tantrum if they aren't allowed. They also pretend they are therapy dogs when they aren't to get round the rules.
And why should I eat in a garden centre in the day or drive miles because local pubs and cafes are full of dogs? As dog owners you don't have to do any research any more because virtually everywhere is dog friendly.

I suspect though that France has higher standards of Dog behavior generally than the ones we seem to have at the moment too often (though many owners here are of course fine).

For instance, French dogs must wear a muzzle on public transport, which I think should be the case here.

Rottweilers and some other breeds must be muzzled in public.

Also, dogs must be kept on a lead in all public parks, gardens, and urban streets . Many parks and public gardens completely ban dogs, even on a leash. I think we should also look at rules like this. Dogs in France seem fine.

I wonder if the decrease in using kennels and dogsitters is due to money being tighter now? Also as I said above the lockdown puppy generation is probably more anxious and less able to cope with kennels.

Don't go to Europe then, especially France, as dogs are allowed just about everywhere and have been for many many years.

We lived there over 20 years ago and took our dog everywhere. Hotel owners would look at us like we were crazy when we asked if they allowed dogs. Often when we sat outside a restaurant they would tell us to come in with our dog even though he was a fairly big dog.

You can be "done" if you want. No one's stopping you from not going to restaurants if the sight of a dog is really too much for you.

I'm not a dog owner but I love to see dogs out and about, and I've almost never seen them cause an issue. A dog in a restaurant wouldn't bother me, and wouldn't bother most people I know, and from the evidence of more restaurants welcoming dogs, it looks like this is the majority feeling.

There will always be some restaurants where dogs aren't welcome though. Just go to those.

I have lots and lots of friends with dogs and some of their houses smell of dog and some don't. How do you reckon that works then? I don't notice the smell in some but do in others? That is plainly ridiculous.

Different breeds have different types of fur/hair and some just do not smell. Quite a few of my friends whose houses do not smell have the same breed of dog.

If you're that worried about about bacteria, I really hope you're not typing that on a phone as statistically it's likely to have far more bacteria than a dog.

When I was growing up, the people I knew who had dogs never took them to the shops or restaurants. They were left at home having been taken on a good walk.

I know! And the worse thing is it stops sensible conversation. There absolutely should be compromise and consideration between all, with dog owners respectfully researching and sticking to dog friendly places, and those who want a dog free spaces researching and sticking to dog free places, but once the 'I hate dog brigade' start throwing around petty insults, it becomes clear that they're just entitled muppets stamping their feet and wanting everything to centre on what they want with no intention of reasonable discussion or compromise.

I love to see dogs in restaurants. I don't understand why it bothers you. Dogs are part of the family and don't like being left on their own. I can't see how it's unhygienic either if they're not bothering you. Obviously if they're jumping on you or trying to get your food it's a different matter, but if they're just sitting quietly what's the problem? I love dogs personally, but my dog barks a lot so we don't take her to restaurants.

It clearly was not a service dog, nor was it training to be one, but it was a very happy doggo, just doing his thing, wagging his tail furiously at anyone who walked past him. No one seemed to mind him being there, but I do agree that the owners were taking the piss.

Taking him into a dog-friendly establishment would have been fine, but he shouldn't have been in Tesco, no matter how friendly and happy he was.
