I live in a lovely, low crime area where the community is great and the state schools good. I have had amazing treatment on the NHS with my cancer diagnosis and treatment and my Dad has been really well cared for over the last year of being ill.
It's by no means perfect but overall does depend on where you live in the UK.

I thought young people and families were being priced out of places like Cockermouth.

It doesn't address the issue of affordability for young people and people on ordinary or lower salaries.

We are on the edge of the lakes so yes, it’s more expensive to live in the national park but Penrith/cockermouth areas and villages on the edge can be very reasonable and great places to live plus very sparsely populated in rural areas.

I hugely appreciate my colleagues, friends and family members who have moved here legally from overseas (from India, Pakistan, China, Hong Hong, Singapore as well as Europe). They are highly-educated, contribute hugely to the UK both economically and culturally and enrich my life.

I'm angry at and about both legal and illegal immigrants who don't integrate in the UK, commit crimes, take far more in social benefits than they will ever pay in tax, and bring over tens of 'relatives' who will do the same.

I'm really angry at the amount of violent and sexual crime committed by men coming from countries with no respect for the law or women. Afghan nationals (like the ones who raped that 14 year old on the train) are convicted of sexual crimes at 20 times the the rate of British men.

Assuming that the OP's husband is in Spain/Portugal legally, is working and contributing, and isn't raping children then it's perfectly reasonable for him to be concerned about UK immigration - it's not 'rich' at all.

Are you so racist that you don't realise that well-integrated UK immigrants are just as concerned about our ridiculous immigration policies as native Brits are?

Isn't there a problem with people who were born and brought up in the Lakes being able to afford to live in the area they were born? Isn't this a common problem in may places.

England is already shit for many people, and soon many more will be joining them. Labour seems determined to squeeze the middle, and full time workers - taxing work, savings and assets all the while putting more obstacles in the way of the young people trying to get started, limiting their ability to buy their own home and build some financial security.

How do you know that the studies in your link are peer-reviewed? None of the studies in the table look at data beyond 2009/2010 for asylum seekers or non-EEA migrants. In fact, the text in your link says:

Because people’s experiences and expectations are vastly different? I live in the Lakes. It’s beautiful, pretty much crime free, really outdoorsy lifestyle, great small schools. I love it but I wouldn’t like in parts of Birmingham for example because it would be very different to what I want in a home/area. You can’t possibly believe all of Spain/Portugal/dubai is the same. There’s crime and problems everywhere.

The most dangerous place for a woman remains her own home. Overall immigration to the UK is roughly balanced between men and women, despite what you might think peer-reviewed academic studies and data analysed by groups like the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford consistently find that immigrants are, on average, less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens. The UK has a problem with its own men which really needs to be looked at first. That’s where the real danger lies.

There was a program on Radio 4 a few months ago. They were saying there has been a significant DECREASE in violent crime and theft, the opposite of public perceptions. So that backs up the pp who said it suits many people to portray Britain in a negative light.
Where crime has increased is in terms of cyber crime.

I sense that you have a completely distorted version of life in the UK.
If safety is your priority, it would be easy to find an extremely safe neighbourhood, although I believe the UK is in general a safe country.

You can see the filth and anti social behaviour and the local parks and communal spaces being trashed by teenagers. The high street is Turkish barber, Vape shop, board up shop on repeat. None wants to go out in the evening as the high street becomes a war zone.

And if you’d only told us once about your life, that’s how I would have contextualised it. It was the repetition, like you really wanted everyone on the thread to know how perfectly peachy your life was, coupled with the swipes at people you had assumed lived in ‘shitholes’, that came off as boasting.
