Dh says the U.K is f***** and he never wants to go back

Chippednailtoepolish · 26/08/2026 14:55

These were his words this morning.

We live abroad in a place where a lot of people are coming to live, escaping the uk and America.
He says with everything on the news, the way it's going and what the people coming to where we are tell him, that we'd be mad to return.
Is he being realistic? I want to return to be with family desperately and have a strange feeling that I need to do it soon

Would we be mad to return at this time? If yes, then when!

Enjoy Dubai, OP!!

I think unless you can speak the language to a decent level, you've no business being elsewhere.

I'm really angry at the amount of violent and sexual crime committed by men coming from countries with no respect for the law or women. Afghan nationals (like the ones who raped that 14 year old on the train) are convicted of sexual crimes at 20 times the the rate of British men.

Once again, this is not true. That stat was based of falsified data in a report by a one man band 'think tank'. The source data quite literally had a tab explaining why the data couldn't be used for per capita comparisons, which good old Honest Robert Bates deleted from his report, before changing some numbers too.

If you check the source data and normalise it for sex, age and socio-economic background the conviction rates between British men and immigrant men are not significantly different.

I know you probably don't care and will continue to spread that misinformation regardless.

Why don't the Government publish the actual data then?

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 13:50

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/08/2026 18:25

@strawberrybubblegum if these are Ministry of Justice Numbers the maths here isn't quite right. The data actually says 15% are foreign nationals, not 27% (the other 12% are just listed as "unknown" because it wasn't recorded). Also, non-UK citizens make up about 13-14% of the population, not 9%.
More importantly, you're comparing apples to oranges. The general UK population includes millions of children and elderly people. The migrant population is mostly young men—the group statistically most likely to commit crime in any country, including our own.
When you compare men of the exact same age, the difference drops right down. Twisting numbers to fit a narrative doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of violence against women in the UK is done by British men known to the victim.

Why won't the Government collect and publish the nationality, immigration status and time in the country of the perpetrators of violent crime, murders and rapes? Why won't they? They are happy to publish the nationalities of the victims.

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 13:46

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/08/2026 18:17

Because I don’t believe that to be true. And have fact checked it and I believe we are ignoring what the real issue is.

Do some research into crime in Sweden when they collected and published the nationality and immigration status of offenders and then come back again and tell us if it's true.

In July 2026, Police fire rubber bullets at anti-tourism protest in Mallorca, when thousands took to the streets, according to the Times of London.
You can watch it here
https://www.thetimes.com/world/europe/article/spain-protests-palma-mallorca-tourism-jz8tlf2k3
That looks pretty apocalyptic, too!
I've googled it and apparently, Spain is overall a statistically safe country, while England is moderately safe.
On the other hand a 'green' bit of England is going to be miles safer than a socially deprived area of Spain, so I really think OP and her husband can quit worrying!

Im in a "green bit" and can tell you our city centre is no longer the lovely clean safe place it was. There have always been areas "to avoid" but unfortunately that is now the town centre and some of the once lovely walks.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/08/2026 17:53

The vast majority of sexual offences and rapes in the UK are committed by British citizens. If a woman becomes a victim of a violent or sexual crime in the UK, the available evidence shows that the perpetrator is overwhelmingly likely to be a white British man known to her. I’ll just post that again. Because it’s a fact.

Can you share the source of your "fact" - your rape statistics by nationality/immigration status of the perpetrator?

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 13:33

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/08/2026 17:20

@strawberrybubblegum sorry to let you know that Women in the UK face the overwhelming majority of male violence and femicide at the hands of men they already know—predominantly current or former intimate partners—rather than from strangers or specific nationality groups. The most dangerous place for a woman remains her own home. Overall immigration to the UK is roughly balanced between men and women, despite what you might think peer-reviewed academic studies and data analysed by groups like the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford consistently find that immigrants are, on average, less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens. The UK has a problem with its own men which really needs to be looked at first. That’s where the real danger lies.

Why are you conflating "immigrants" as one homogenous group and comparing the crime rates of "immigrants" and "non immigrants". What does a female surgeon from Canada have in common with an uncheckable male from Afganistan that arrived on a small boat? Absolutely nothing. What are you lumping them together for statistical purposes?

Edit: also you have stated women are not more at risk from specific nationality groups. I would love you to share your sources for this as my understanding is the uk government won't collect or release this data but where it has been kept e.g. Sweden it is not in keeping with what you say. E.g. gang rapes were far and away carried out by immigrant men.

Doigoforit2 · 28/08/2026 13:28

Surely it’s a relevant question… how long has it been since you lived in the UK?

and did you move because you and DH thought the country was going to the dogs? Or because of an amazing job opportunity?

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 13:25

DdraigGoch · 27/08/2026 16:27

You've clearly no idea what goes on in other developed countries.

Why would we set not being as bad as some other country as what we want to measure ourself by.

I reported to the transport police a man shouting how he was going to knock out his mate and knock out everyone on the carriage repeatedly.

The reply was that they'll be no evidence (no CCTV on the train or at the station?) No prospect of conviction but thanks for the report they'll add it to the statistics.

Hope this poor person gets a bit more assistance from the police.

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 12:48

soddingspiderseason · 27/08/2026 11:26

Indeed, the irony is astounding. They want to leave this country to get a better life elsewhere, and that’s apparently fine. But other people wanting to leave their country to get a better life here are wholly responsible for every evil in the world. There’s a cognitive cog that’s not quite slipped into place for the grass is always greener types.

Presumably the country doesn't think the British people are disproportionately responsible for violent crime/rapes etc. or making the economy poorer. If they do - e.g. I have heard people say British people are responsible for exploitative sex abuse in some Asian countries then those countries are free to ban Brits from coming.

By right wing agitators you mean people with opinions that are different to yours?

So what if someone is anti-abortion. People are entitled to their views. Presumably laws are made (or should be) by discussion/votes by people who hold lots of different views. Why do you have to try to "cancel" people that think differently to you?

I agree with you. Some people only trust the Guardian or BlueSky, up to them. Those things will still exist in the mix.

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 12:22

randomchap · 27/08/2026 08:17

The FSU, Free Speech Union, are not transparent about how they are funded. They're essentially a mouthpiece for right wing agitators. And of the funders we do know about, one of them is a charity run by an anti-abortion lawyer.

Don't trust a word that they say, they have an agenda, and it's not about free speech

Yes, I agree. Right now, the OP's Dh seems very set on staying but that doesn't mean he'll always feel like that. Likewise, the OP might come to the conclusion that staying put would be better for them all as a family and she might instead look into other ways of spending more time with her parents.

Doing more research, talking to others and then weighing up the pros and cons together will hopefully help them come to a decision they're both happy with.

Thank you x yes this is the aim

if someone is thinking about GDP or economic robustness, doesn't aging population come into that outcome strongly?

Which country with population aging as fast as UK has grown in gdp/capita or gdp rank/capita?

The main reason UK population is growing is because people don't die as young as they used to.

Nothing to do with up to a million people (net) coming in each year then?

I'm in the same type of situation but I can't come back home to the UK because it doesn't feel safe for my family and I can see it getting much worse. I'm very sad about it but they come first.

Just wanted you to know that you're not alone.

Where are you saying doesn't feel safe?

Winter2020 · 28/08/2026 12:03

GoldenSandy · 27/08/2026 00:13

You're right, it is a false equivalence because the people you are describing come to the UK because they're fleeing war and persecution, and the Brits going abroad are economic migrants - the thing that people in the UK complain about the most.

And they leave their women and children in the war and to be persecuted? Sure.

Yet when we were at war it was the children sent to safety? Ukraine at war women snd children sent to safety.

Admittedly the journey is dangerous because of the men that are coming and some women haven't survived the channel crossing with these men.

https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/three-migrants-found-dead-on-board-boat-in-the-english-channel-5HjdfLc_2/
3 women had "heart attacks" during the crossing. Course they did. How many men had "heart attacks" on the same crossing?

Three migrant women found dead 'from heart attacks' on board boat in the English Channel | LBC

Three migrants have been found dead on board a boat in the English Channel off the coast of Dunkirk.

Beryl92 · 26/08/2026 23:21

I don't know why I'm bothering because cognitive dissonance is too strong to argue with, but:

  1. Migrants arriving: 405 last week into a population of 69,500,000
  2. British nationals account for 75% to 85% of all rapes
  3. I live in a major UK city - have an NHS dentist within walking distance, as do my whole family, and have accessed the NHS several times over the last couple of years - whenever needed. Had a successful life saving operation in 2021.
  4. Home ownership is a problem, but this is due to under-building, rise in single person households, older people living in bigger houses and buy to let / second home ownership
  5. Please name this mythical village? The villages round by me are overwhelmingly white.
  6. The police where I live are wonderful and very visible, they do cuppa with a copper, one of the police officers recently gave me a call back just because i'd seen someone who looked a bit dodgy (they were white by the way) in the back lane.
  7. You are generalising isolated incidents - I can easily give you isolated incidents that prove the opposite
  1. 100,000 asylum seekers a year. 40,000 off the boats and 60,000 from other routes. The Government is now stopping student visas from Afganisran, Sudan and some other countries because of the liklihood that they will claim asylum.
  1. % of all rapes versus what % of population. The Government has refused to collect or publish nationalities/immigration status of offenders while having no problem providing nationalities of victims. Wonder why that is?
  1. I'm with a private dentist. Kids NHS because the same dentist will take on NHS kids not adults. I assume because he gets paid for peeking in their mouth for 5 seconds.
  1. The million plus (net) people that arrived in 2023 made no difference to the pressures on housing? Really so where did they all live? Hobbit holes?
  1. What do you think about the Oxfordshire town of 600 that is about to have 1200 asylum seeker men in their barracks. Free to come and go as they like. They are assured that there is lots of security "on site" but the men don't have to stay on site. What security is there for these people in their village snd homes?
  1. Police can turn up in groups if you have posted something on social media they don't agree with especially if you have any public profile. They have little time for ordinary people suffering violence and intimidation. Unless there is an accusation of racist words of course. They can arrest 17 people pretty quick when their own get killed.
  1. Isolated incidents create statistical trends. If the Government wants to prove their is no statistical trend then collect and publish the nationality/asylum status and time in the country of people that stab, murder and rape. If asylum seekers are no more dangerous than the average male what do the Government have to fear in doing this. Look up Ross Kemp interviewing men about the effect of rape on women. They don't even understand the question.

Depends where you are now.

The UK is fucked in many ways. It feels like a completely different country to only 8-10 years ago.

I'd agree with this. I visit regularly, and it has definitely changed in that time. Everything is much more expensive, and infrastructure seems worse. But there is and element of this pretty much everywhere in Europe. Housing costs seem mental, though. I couldn't afford to move back even if I wanted to.I

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/08/2026 20:30

You will get polar opposite views here for political, economic, societal and geographic reasons.
I live in a lovely, low crime area where the community is great and the state schools good. I have had amazing treatment on the NHS with my cancer diagnosis and treatment and my Dad has been really well cared for over the last year of being ill.
It's by no means perfect but overall does depend on where you live in the UK.

I love this post and agree 100%
