I was away on holiday when that joyous event took place. I lost my job directly due to Labour policies but there’s a job in the pipeline so I’ll be back to paying taxes again soon, don’t worry.

The UK has remained pretty much where it is relative to other G7 nations for years. We are still at the cutting edge of many technologies, although which technologies we are at the cutting edge of changes quite a bit over time as we fall behind in some areas and develop new ones. That's a feature of a dynamic economy.

I wouldn’t be devastated no. I’d support them f they joined the military as a career choice. I’d be bloody pissed off if it were a draft though and they weren’t given a choice. That’s entirely different.

Then I wouldn’t come back. The quality of life there is a million times better. People are right that it’ll get better but probably not in our lifetimes.

My husband felt a pull to come home last year. We did. We all regret it. Don’t do it.

None of this contradicts what I was saying- as to skills affecting your ability to have a good life I would strongly disagree, unless your skills are in finance or IT.
You can be very skilled indeed and not be able to earn a decent wage in the UK.

I think that was to me. We did look at Navy cadets as the Navy fund university places I believe.and I thought it could be an interesting opportunity to explore. We didn’t have the time but I wouldn’t completely rule it out. I could imagine them potentially being in the armed forces but I haven’t explicitly asked them.

We are the 4th biggest economy in the G7.

The GDP gap between us and France/Italy (which were considered our nearest competitor countries in terms of size of population, standard of development and GDP) has widened considerably over the past few years. There is a possibility that we may overtake the Japanese who are currently in 3rd place in the next decade.

GDP isn't of course the whole story in terms of macro indicators and we struggle in terms of productivity and also probably equality of wealth as we are importing significant amounts of people that add to the population but do not currently generate high GDP (hence issues with GDP per capita).

I think the issue whether you can have a good life in the UK largely depends on your skills. If you have the right skillset you can do well here, but if you don't you probably are going to struggle compared with other countries.

There are things here that can be very expensive (eg property) compared with other places, so if you want to maintain a standard of living and you are established in a country with relatively low property prices it can be difficult to transfer and maintain the same lifestyle.
