What's going on in Middlesbrough anyone live there? [[https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gmrz8d31mo https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gmrz8d31mo]] This house fire may be linked to criminal activities at the weekend, where the policemen were killed. Just before the crash on Saturday somebody's house had been rammed with a vehicle doing extensive damage to the house? They set out in their car trying to find them and retaliate. It said it's happened to other houses as well? Is this all linked to drugs? It's horrible. Where's it going to end? Why would you want to be mixed up in all that? Is it worth your life?

It doesnt happen very often. Often theres some reason why they get off. Or some mitigating circumstances like MH or ASD. Or people wont talk so they dont even get charged. Or they dont get such long sentences and they're out after 8 years or something, or even less.

While they're in there, they're still doing deals and stuff anyway.

I don’t care if chavs kill themselves or each other. But innocent people are getting involved now and that’s problematic.

That’s probably subjective- they’re earning thousands of pounds a day. Prison is just the cost of doing business, get out and start up again. In between sentences you can make a fortune. If you manage not to get killed

That's impossible. It's a hugely lucrative market seemingly with no limit and the drugs are used by people in walks of life.

Yes it seems to be impossible to stop. Yet there are democracies such as Japan and Korea who don’t have the drug problems that exist in UK and USA.
Yes, I’m sure there are drugs in Japanese and Korean nightclubs but certainly not on the scale of UK.
I don’t know about other European countries.

These countries have cultures of respect for the law, appropriate punishment and actual application of punishment. The UK has become increasingly lawless, as sentences are not strict enough and are not enforced adequately. Sends a cultural message that crime is bad but not necessarily punishable.

Some areas of the north east have been in decline for many many years. Loss of industry, employment opportunities, cuts to children’s and public services. People start getting involved in crime at a young age as it’s more appealing than a shitty job or unemployment.

It dosent pay in the long run though.
Better to have an ordinary job or no jib and still be alive.

I always comment on this, their little bit of weed as well. No one replies. No one even acknowledges it apart from to try to claim that criminalisation causes drug crime and that their weed is from a little old man who grows his own. It always is of course.

Agree. BBC did a short report on this and it seemed like OCG- ramming houses appears to be an intimidation tactic and has happened multiple times in the last few years in parts of Middlesbrough

Someone's been caught running a flipping scam on land marked for industrial developments, but there's so much more. Billions have probably been spirited out of the local government purse over the past several years, and it's not as if Cleveland has funds to spare.

Like all our previously industrial centres, long-term unemployment's now generational and concern about NEETS is definitely not unfounded.

I agree, too, though, that there's so much life and human warmth in the Boro!

Along with the whole a little bit of weeds fine no harm. Everyone does it.

Always comparing it to a few glasses of wine or something like it’s wine dealers racing their cars around and stabbing each other over their turf.

I feel endless compassion to the families and friends of the police officers

Very limited compassion to the criminal classes who feel it is ok speed the wrong way down a dial carriageway or that it's a defence to say they were being chased by police. They make life more dangerous and more miserable and more costly for everyone

Wow. From the BBC report and the police statement I'd say they're pretty sure the fire is linked.

Such a shame it took the deaths of two police officers before they started arresting people for what is clearly a big problem for the area.

It was mentioned on one of the local Grangetown FB pages that one of the policemen who was killed in the A66 crash used to live in the house that was set on fire today. His family are no longer there. If that’s true, it’s another innocent family devastated.

Fucking hell.

I hoped I was being over cautious with my above comment about the deceased polices families being protected.
