Do female leaders and managers make better managers ?

Not really. I owned a business for a decade and was much better just working alone and pulling 12 hour days. I did subcontract but I ended up doing most of the work myself and paying too well, so it didn’t work out.

I suppose I’ve had to step into a managerial role a couple of times and did a moderately good job. My problem is I can’t really deal with the scatty and idle. I get frustrated. I just expect everyone to crack on with stuff like i do and when they meander and prevaricate I just think I’ll do it myself, I see myself as more of a worker than a delegator. I always say that in every past life I’ve been in i would have been a peasant and a wench, a farm hand and a labourer.

Tomas Chamorto-Premuzic wrote Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders? He says we value the wrong traits looking for leaders. The argument would hold true for women as much as men. It is not a question of someone's sex, but their abilities to plan, organise, communicate, listen, etc. Men and women can both do this well, or badly, but we tend to prefer charismatic personality more than proven ability in the areas which really matter in leadership.

Do you ever aspire to be a manager yourself?

I have had more male managers than female, but both my best and very worst managers were female. The men have all been sort of middlingly fine. The really good manager was phenomenal, she was so inspiring and a genuinely great leader, the worst almost caused me to have a nervous breakdown and disappointingly lived up to every tired stereotype I've ever heard about female leadership.

Some people are good and natural leaders, or at least are self aware enough to be conscious of, and work on, areas of weakness. Some people are rubbish and have no self awareness. I don't think sex or gender come into it at all, really.

Not in my experience no. I would have a male boss over a female boss all day long.

Yes, there are bad women managers, but there are many, many bad men managers, too.

I mean, most female politicians can't define what a woman is. And it was a woman who supported putting male sex offenders in women's prisons.

Queens are statistically more likely to start a war than kings apparently. I do wonder if it's because they dont have to actually fight in them.

Women consistently vote in favour of male bosses. They feel even more strongly than men.

I have had some bloody awful female managers - absolute bitches who will walk over everyone to reach the top. They have no understanding of work life balance for others but are out of the door asap themselves

Two great managers stick out on my career, one female and the other male. My worst ever manager was a woman - she was a vindictive bully.

Just like skin colour/age etc, it's irrelevant. Had good and bad of both sexes.

Some say women are more sympathetic about childcare, but I've seen women managers who are rich/have lots of family help scoffing at underlings who aren't so lucky.

Just like some say that they've been treated less gently by female gynaecologists, as if because they're women and don't find something painful, no other woman should have the right to!

In my admittedly small sample of experience my female bosses have been better. The males tended to be lazier and less on the ball than the females. In general I think women are more focused on people rather than projects, are more empathetic, and pay better attenion to detail all of which are good management skills. I worked in retail for a long time and saw a lot of my male colleagues promoted to manager over the females, they were definitely promoted because they were male and wouldn't be having babies, that was years ago tbf and I hope that has changed for the better.

Sometimes the worst people (men & women) are drawn to management positions for power & salary increase not necessarily them being cut out to be great at it unfortunately

I’m a female people manager I’ve been a manager around 15 odd years and I like to think I’m a good manager because I’ve learned from some really great and really poor managers both male and female. The worst manager I had happened to be female, my favourite manager was a male although not necessarily the best. The best manager I have ever had was female.

The best boss I ever had was a lady solicitor. I was her deputy. She said she found managing men a great deal easier than managing women.
