AIBU to refuse apologising after being blocked in at Tesco?

ThisIsAbsolutelyCrazy · 26/08/2026 00:07

So, yesterday I go to Tesco with DH. DH is a wheelchair user and has a Blue Badge.

There were no disabled bays or parent and child bays so I went to a far corner of the car park where there were two empty rows of normal bays and parked between 2 bays so had room for DH to get in and out.

Lo and behold we came back to a car parked so close to my driver's side that I couldn't get between the cars - less than 10 inches in between. The car had parked over into the bay I had half parked in.

We were obviously WTF. The other bays around us were still empty.

Coming round to the front of the cars, we saw there was a young lad no more that 15-17 sitting in the passenger seat of the other car. He obviously couldn't get out of his door either because it was up against mine! I said 'what kind of idiot would park like this' or some such. He said 'my dad'. Then asked him why he'd blocked him in.as well. He didn't answer and just kept his head down. I will admit I did swear a bit saying for fucks sake, this is fucking disgusting. Then said 'tell your Dad he's a complete cunt'. At no point did I make threats to the lad or swear at him. I knew he didn't park the car.

Anyway I then climbed in through the passenger side, moved the car into the row in front, got DH in and we left.

The Dad had not come back. I'm kicking myself because I didn't take a picture of the way he'd parked.

Anyway, tonight at around 8pm there's a knock at the door and two policemen are there. My heart dropped because I thought it was about one of the DC (both were out with friends), but they said they'd had a complaint about me causing 'fear and alarm' to a minor!

Turns out the Dad must have already had my reg number and told the police what I'd said. No mention of how he'd blocked me deliberately and left his son trapped in the car!

He must have known whoever came back to the car would be angry!

Anyway police said I could make a formal apology to the boy and the matter would not be taken further - this was because I admitted swearing.

I said No I will not as I had figured out by then that the Dad had done this all deliberately. No clue who he is.

AIBU to think he must be an absolute psycho?

Especially to leave his son trapped in the car!

I am going to take some time to educate myself more about the lives of the disabled and their carers because of this thread.

• Carers UK campaigns for carers’ rights and provides practical guidance for anyone supporting a disabled person.
• Their resources help able‑bodied people understand the realities of caring, including legal rights, wellbeing, and navigating social care systems.
• They also offer helplines, peer support sessions, and educational materials about disability and caring responsibilities.

"OP was harassed and reacted"

Provoked maybe but not harassed. She did however harangue and arguably even harass the innocent teen.

We know one parent on this thread is abusive....she has demonstrated this and admitted it to the police and used t
Abusive language towards people on this thread who don't agree with her......

She didn’t use any abusive language on this thread. She’s had it used at her.

OliveMyLove · 28/08/2026 12:04

OP, I’m sorry this happened to you and your husband. I can really imagine how upsetting it must have been for you. I think many would have reacted this way even if they were not caring for someone at the time.

What law did they allege you’d broken? I wouldn’t be apologising either. This is not going to court.

Exactly my thoughts.

OP has claimed she didn't shout or was aggressive, she just used the swear words.

OP has been called some horrific names on this thread, which haven't even been said but just written down.
I don't agree with anyone swearing at anyone whether it's verbally or in writing.

There have been a lot of replies on this thread up to the point where this thread will be full shortly.
I again emphasise OP was very very unreasonable in swearing at a minor, it was intimidation. He wasn't the one who had parked the car. Yet he was the one who had to to listen to the verbal assault.
Unfortunately OP doesn't realise that.

OP was harassed and reacted. The teen surely recognized that. I don’t think an apology from the OP would help him with an abusive parent.

You can be with someone and not condone everything they do. Also who defines what something is about? The writer? The reader?

Exactly!

well, I think it demonstrates the everyday obstacles and difficulties faced by people with disabilities and their families/ carers in just doing ordinary things. Not enough disabled bays, so @ThisIsAbsolutelyCrazy did a send thing - parked in such a way and in a part of the car park where she wasn’t obstructing anyone else but could still allow her DH to get in and out of the car and his wheelchair. But some bastard took it upon himself to teach her a lesson. And then sic the police onto her.

Just for managing her ordinary activities.

Thank you for such a sensible post.

I don't condone the swearing at child bit but proportionately I'm with theOP

and this makes no sense. If you don’t condone the swearing, you’re not with the OP. The swearing, and whether OP should apologise for it, is the crux of the thread.

I’m really not following your logic here. You seem to be implying that if someone acts like an arse towards a carer of a disabled person, it’s proportionate for them to take out their anger on a teenage bystander. It isn’t. I can’t see where proportionality comes into it. The dad was an arse, OP behaved very badly. Both are true. One doesn’t cancel the other out.

Edited

No I'm not arguing that. Id have said that if I was arguing that.
The thread is a lot about proportionality. That includes people's reactions. I'm sharing my own reaction. None of that is illogical.

Think a lot of the thread is about proportionality. Swearing about a child's parent in hearing of child versus blocking the exit of a disabled person by blocking their carer, due to someone's perception of bad parking which wasn't inconveniencing anyone.
I don't condone the swearing at child bit but proportionately I'm with theOP and some responses are nuts in the blanking out of vulnerability of a disabled person and their carer.

I think you may have missed a key part of the happenings in your summary.

OP chose to be verbally abusive to an innocent bystander, a teenager. Did you miss that?

"You compared a rapist to someone swearing. I don’t think that needs a rebuttal."

I used that example to illustrate how ridiculous and flawed your arguments were because no one would use those principles you used in the case of a more serious crime.

Get a grip.

Quite the rebuttal for someone who claims to want to be "accurate".

"This “child” is unlikely to ever see, never mind be “abused” by this woman again."

  1. Not sure why you have child and abuse in quotation marks. He clearly is a child and op's action would easily meet the government definition of one of the four types of harm that police, social services, schools etc are meant to protect children from.
  1. In my experience people use the same supermarket repeatedly and get in a routine about when they do so, so it is entirely possible he will see her again.
  1. Saying the child is unlikely to see her again so it doesn't matter is a ridiculous principle. By that reasoning a rapist shouldn't be prosecuted if their victim was unlikely to see them again.
  1. You might say he should because it might happen to another woman but then again op shows no remorse for her deplorable behaviour towards a child, and sees no need to apologise. so apparently might behave similarly towards another child in the future.

Hence prevention of harm = police action
