Apparently octopus are highest rated in UK currently shall I switch to them for energy?

We’ve only just moved from Scottish Power to Octopus after an horrendous experience with SP! I rue the day we left Octopus in the first place.

ImOnlyMakingPlansForNigel · 26/08/2026 13:52

Another fan here. Day to day they’ve been great but I also had a nightmare of a problem which they worked to resolve - and throughout it they were communicative and helpful.

If anyone else wants a referral code let me know!

Sparkletastic · 26/08/2026 13:44

They are great

Dazzylazzy · 26/08/2026 13:41

Don’t switch!! They’re great if everything is ok when there’s a problem they are a nightmare! My meter broke 2 years ago and they can’t/wont resolve it. I’ve had to complain to the ombudsman as I’m going round in circles tearing my hair out to get them to listen as to why I can’t provide a meter reading. Multiple engineers have been out agreed it’s broken state they can’t change it due to the location and back into the system I go!!!

notanothernamesurely · 26/08/2026 12:14

I have had no end of problems. They mostly related to ev though so if you don’t have an ev maybe but if you do I wouldn’t.

Leabee1234 · 26/08/2026 11:39

Thanks everyone i have transferred to them. Ive opted for a flexible direct debit but not sure whether to changed to a fixed tariff

they are excellent imo. When my mum died they put her account under mine and I was easily able to keep track of it. No monthly payment required; I just paid on an ad hoc basis as nobody was living in the property. They also sent me a huge bunch of flowers and a condolence card. It was so unexpected and a lovely gesture.

Was with them for 5 years plus, great customer service, accurate billing, really no complaints at all.

Malbecfan · 25/08/2026 12:59

Brilliant for us too.

We have an Economy 7 tariff as there is no gas here & we have some electric storage heaters. We had to get a smart meter as the original tariff switch was phased out. Due to SWEB (now National Grid’s) incompetence, we had a fuse that Octopus could not touch. The young man from Octopus realised this, was really helpful, took loads of photos and spoke to National Grid. NG fucked up the replacement and then lied about it. Octopus customer service emailed me the photos as evidence and I eventually got NG to sort it out. It took 8 months. Finally the original Octopus guy came out, fitted the meter, showed me how to work it then went to check on my dad next door.

i would recommend to anyone.

caringcarer · 25/08/2026 12:53

I'm with Octopus and if you have an electric car you can get unbelievably cheap electric overnight. I think it's something like 3.7p pkwh instead of normal 30p pkwh. I've been with them for 6 years now and never had an issue..

Octopus are a brilliant company. They are UK based and the customer service team are excellent. Been with them for years and no complaints.
They also do energy saving offer's, so use less energy on certain time's in the week gives you free energy at the weekend.

Totally agree ,very customer responsive

Betterbeingdead · 25/08/2026 12:41

We always had British gas till they decided our day readings were night and vice versa which made our bills very horribly low. After literally years of trying to pay the extra we got ofgen.in (2008 ) they told me I was wrong bg was right and to let it go and worry about real things ( still got the patronising letter ) so I gave up . When we moved our new property was octopus . Had no problems in 9 years even with 3 house moves . Service is excellent you can talk to a real person and emails are answered promptly . No complaints
People that bought our house had the same problem apparently 24/7 had wired the meters wrongly when the houses were built. They wernt bothered been there 9 years on cheap electricity they had 1 go at getting it fixed then decided it was BGs problem

PirateMemoryGame · 25/08/2026 12:37

I used them a couple of years ago and their customer service was awful, I changed again quickly and have been with British Gas since.

SeraphinaRainbird · 25/08/2026 12:34

I’m another person who recommends Octopus!

StripyHorse · 25/08/2026 12:33

No problems with Octopus at all.

Scottish Power on the other hand...customer service is awful, and you really need to keep a close eye on billing! Avoid at all costs.

DancingFerret · 25/08/2026 12:31

Another vote for Octopus. We were switched to them when Bulb disappeared.

I sold an inherited house last year. Dual fuel was supplied by British Gas and I was nearly hairless trying to get any sense out of their agents - they were so incompetent and not one person I spoke to had English as their first language.

That experience made me very thankful we were switched to Octopus.

Lougle · 25/08/2026 12:29

We're with Octopus. They're fantastic.

Wish44 · 25/08/2026 12:13

they get my vote ! I charge my car with them for a ridiculously tiny amount of money on their cheap night rate

guestusername · 25/08/2026 12:06

I’m with octopus and rate them quite highly, especially in comparison to the likes of British Gas. The bills are easy to understand, the app works well and I like the challenge of saving power and getting free power at weekends too. Might only be the odd hour or two but that’s when everything will be charged or used to make the most of it

If anyone else would like a ref code, send me a message

SadiraOfTyr · 25/08/2026 12:06

Very happy with them - we have gas, electric, export (we have solar panels), and EV smart charging with them and it all works great using the app despite our quite complex set up.

Loulou4022 · 25/08/2026 12:02

Mum & Dad are with them and have been very happy. They get a cheaper rate at certain times overnight so Dad sets the car to charge and the dishwasher and washing machine on timer. They’ve never had any problems so can’t comment on how good they are then.

8TinyToeBeans · 25/08/2026 12:00

We’ve been with them for about 4 years. They’re fine as long as it’s all ticking on fine, but my mum had an issue with them cocking up a bill and it was so hard to get them to understand that it was wrong…it was simple, the maths didn’t make sense, but if you get someone who’s crap at maths on the customer service side it’s like pulling teeth. She eventually got them to understand but it took repeated calls and emails.

They've also cocked up my bills by refunding and rebilling an entire year of use and doing it wrong, soI’ve been in £1k of fictional credit for around 2 years now cause of their billing failures so I just pay what I use each month and ignore the credit cause I know they will eventually work out their mistake. 🤔I can’t face fighting to make customer service see the issue. Not after seeing how much effort it took mum.

I do also have a family member who worked for them and they felt the quality of the customer service was definitely vastly variable depending on who you got on the end of the phone!

Jemma478 · 25/08/2026 11:59

CosySeal · 25/08/2026 11:20

I was with them for years and had no issues. I have recently switched as found a better tariff elsewhere and they have still not released monies owed to me which is very annoying as it has been months now.

But as a customer, I had no complaints

Oh no, I’ve just switched from Octopus for a better deal too and have quite a bit of money on my account, was hoping I’d get it back quite quickly.

They have been really good upto now tho OP

Seeingadistance · 25/08/2026 11:58

Like others - very happy with Octopus. Was moved to them from Bulb.

I'd advise getting away from Scottish Power as soon as possible and keep a record of every interaction with them. Previous owner of my flat was with Scottish Power and I made mistake of sticking with them. I installed gas for first time in the property and Scottish Power put in the gas meter. When I then switched to Bulb I just cannot describe how awful Scottish Power were. They completely denied being my gas supplier - despite having installed the gas meter and sending me bills! They eventually sent gas meter info to my new supplier but it turned out to have been someone else's meter information that they'd sent. They then denied they'd done that!

It took me about a year - countless very long phone calls, emails and letters to escape from Scottish Power. Every individual person I had contact with was polite and pleasant when they did eventually answer the phone but they never did anything they said they would!

Scottish Power have scarred me for life!

dnasurprise · 25/08/2026 11:46

We are very happy with octopus. have been with them for 5+ years
