AIBU to feel uncomfortable about my partner's comment on teenage niece?

If your partner said to you “it was weird how grown up dear niece looks she had her boobs out at the family meal, I still just think of her as being so young” would you find this weird ?

for context partner early 30s and niece is 16. It made me feel uncomfortable not sure if it was genuine “oh she’s turning into a woman” comment from my partner or it its abit Pervy / strange to notice …

I think its fine its something ive commented on multiple times about family members especially if I haven't seen them in a while and they look significantly different. I don't think its fair only women can comment on these changes sometimes its a bit of a shock as they are not this little girl anymore.

I don't think it's fair that men predate on teenage girls, that's why what they say is important. Though I'd also find the same comment inappropriate from a woman. The only way someone would "Have their boobs out" would be to be sitting there topless.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 25/08/2026 04:55

I find it creepy, I would never say someone had their boobs out. DD2 is 32DD and looks different in normal tops to someone who is a B cup.

Parents are responsible to teach their female kids propriety, nice clothing, moderation and respect to others by how they show up

Riiiight, just the female kids. Of course not the male kids.

Miss the Victorian era much, hm?

CypressGrove · 25/08/2026 04:42

My DH and I have sometimes discussed how grown up younger relatives have gotten - but we don't mention breasts. Likely we are both thinking it though as a obvious visual sign but not need to mention it.

Whatnomilk · 25/08/2026 04:33

Eurgh no, it's not a good comment for an uncle to comment on a niece's body no.

I think if thats the thought he thinks is acceptable to say out loud then I dread to think what's going on in his head.

My thoughts exactly!

mashpatooties · 25/08/2026 03:55

I think it's a fair comment if he's used to seeing her as a child and then she presents as a woman seemingly overnight.
If a woman said it, there'd be no worry.

Berlin2018 · 25/08/2026 03:49

However I also feel his comments were wrong!

Boobs out always makes me uncomfy when it’s family, I don’t know why but it really does. Maybe I’m a buttoned up prude. If my sister or niece are showing cleavage I definitely notice and feel awkward and a bit distracted. I am defo not in any way perving them. It’s just weird to me. I imagine your partner may have felt the same.

Edited

Me too, I don’t really understand it to be honest. My niece wore a dress recently that was completely open so you could see her whole bra at a family party. If it had been DD I would have had to say something. It’s about dressing for the occasion. I also think it’s sad when girls feel the need to dress for the male gaze.

likeitshard · 25/08/2026 02:37

If he’s generally a good egg I’d assume he voiced it because he felt uncomfortable with his niece looking attractive (not the same as finding her attractive)
if he added any comments of appreciation as to how she looks I would find it creepy

TheQueenOfEverything · 25/08/2026 02:07

Yes but you are her parents!

How would you feel if your uncle or cousin made a comment about her appearance during adolescent growth, its not normal and its not right.

Whoops75 · 25/08/2026 01:50

Not ok OP

plenty of ways to say she has grown up without mentioning breasts. He’s a basic model, you can do better.

Breasts are a body part its not something to be ashamed of or find odd.

I didn’t suggest anyone was ashamed of them. They are secondary sexual characteristics and as such not open to comment from uncles.

Well let’s hope she never notices the OP’s partner assessing her chest, or making comments about it, because if there’s anything likely to make a child feel uncomfortable about their changing body, it will be unwelcome attention from some creepy uncle she previously thought of as completely safe.

Some of you have got some really fucking weird ideas about what are acceptable comments from men.

I have never felt the need to comment on my nieces’ breasts. Maybe their height or that they’re young women not girls, but to vocalise that I’ve noticed their breasts seems very odd.

I’d imagine your niece would have felt pretty disgusted and upset if she’d heard him comment.

I disagree with the previous posters; that would make me feel quite uncomfortable. If there was really a need to comment, he could have said how grown up she looks seemingly overnight, and that it came as a shock to him because he still thinks of her as a young child. But I don’t think that there is ever any need for any adult male to comment on the breasts of a 16 yr old child, irrespective of the style of her clothing. To say she had her ‘boobs out’ makes me feel very uncomfortable.

I agree with you. Comments have been made by my DH regarding our nieces and its always been anout the clothing and how old they looked . There'd never be a reason for him to.comment on their actual.boobs falling out.
I hope it was just crass language rather than anything pervy.

Royaly82 · 25/08/2026 00:04

I would find this really weird. Noticing she looks grown up fair enough. Specifically talking about her boob's...creepy

OchreReader · 25/08/2026 00:01

I think it’s horrible he actually mentioned her boobs, rather than saying how grown up she looked. I would have felt sick at the thought of an older male relative passing comment on my boobs when I was that age. Sorry, I think he’s a creep

ComedyGuns · 24/08/2026 23:53

This is actually quite mild IMO, particularly in contrast to the pervy sedated rape enthusiast on another thread.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 24/08/2026 23:52

Ugh...

user1492757084 · 24/08/2026 23:47

He did not say it to her.
Nor would an Uncle say it to you.

The comment, said just to you, is fine.

ISpyNoPlumPie · 24/08/2026 23:38

Totally unacceptable comment. Just an easy rule for life, don’t comment on other people’s bodies. Even if you think that’s ok, perhaps draw the line at commenting on the development of secondary sexual characteristics in children. So fucking gross.
