AIBU to skip the queue at the Snowdon summit?

The BBC is reporting arguments about people queue-jumping to get to the trig point at the top of Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon). Apparently queues have been up to an hour long!

I can understand queuing for a photo at the top, but if I just want to get to the top and go straight back down again then why would I queue behind the insta crowd?

People wearing coats and backpacks queue to reach the top of a mountain, against the backdrop of a blue sky.

Yr Wyddfa rows between people queuing and those skipping the line

There has been disagreement between queuers and others skipping the line to reach the top of Yr Wyddfa.

I grew up in a house halfway up a mountain, and was familiar with Mountain Rescue operations being centralised from our house since I was a toddler.

All I can say is that just as many "mountain leaders" caused issues as first timers. I was regularly out on the fells in cheap gear that was appropriate for the weather, outraging the "mountain leaders".

I don't really get why 'I want to have a solo picture at the top' is vacuous, sheep-like, and selfish while 'I NEED to touch the magic special designated marker at the top of a cairn of stones otherwise my 3 hour trek up the rest of the mountain doesn't count, because that's what you're supposed to do' is apparently a sane, individual, and sensible rationale!

Would I queue for a photo myself, probably not, I'd just take one somewhere else, but the mockery of people who do want one doesn't sit well with me. Most people aren't going to go straight up and back down - they'll take some time to rest, admire the view, chat to friends, have a drink, etc. all of which can be done as easily while standing in a queue, with the bonus they also get a nice photo as well. On the 'stupid things people queue for' scale it's quite low down imho.

Everyone is as silly as each other in my opinion - once you've climbed the mountain you've climbed the mountain, you don't need to touch a special stone or take a specific photo to prove it.

Edited

I think it's the artifice of wanting a photo that implies they're the only person/group there that's so silly. If the Instagrammers would just accept that life isn't an edit, there'd be very little need for queueing.

Frumpitydoo · 26/08/2026 08:53

This is funny as fuck. What have we become?!!

mamajong · 26/08/2026 08:56

Yanbu at all, I would not queue. Since when is the expectation of a solo photo a thing? When ive done this in the past, if you take a photo you accept other people are in it, no one has a god given right to commend the space for their perfect insta shots - get an effing life! If people are stupid enough to queue let them get on with it

MyShyCat · 26/08/2026 09:01

At least elitism keeps the crowds down.

Do you really think Benny Rothman wanted the hills to be filled with bluetooth speakers, Instagram selfie hunters, disposable bbq's, Stag and Hen do's, inconsiderate parking, unleashed dogs, human excrement etc etc etc

The mountains ARE NOT for everyone.

The mountains are only for those who can follow the Countryside Code.

Mind you... I think the old adage "Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints" may be a little outdated!

Rocketpants50 · 26/08/2026 09:13

What is all this strange queuing malarky? I get it when in a post office, shop, theme park (and I am quite strict with mine in these instances you very much wait your turn without complaint) but these 'new' queues are weird. A pub put out an announcement the other day to ask people not to firm orderly queues - just go to the bar. My DD had an odd one last weekend, heading to a festival had to cross a road at a crossing, a queue had formed - single file! (She didn't).

icouldholditwithacobweb · 26/08/2026 09:20

I'd walk past the the queue and would be very likely to give a mouthful to anyone who challenged me.

Maomee · 26/08/2026 09:47

People insist the UK isn't overpopulated and yet we have shit like this going on. Makes me laugh, honestly.

Giraffe82 · 26/08/2026 09:58

Yeah theres no way I would be queuing to touch the top of a mountain.

The same happens at Lands End if you've ever been. The classic Lands End sign is behind a barrier that you have to pay to stand next to, but stand 10ft to one side and you can still get it in your photo.

How much longer before the tops of mountains are barriered off and they start charging for access ;)

I had a barny with someone at a famous photo spot in the lake district once. This person rocked up to the literal photo point and unrolled a towel to sunbath despite everyone around clearly trying to take 'that' picture. THAT I did have a problem with. You could sunbath anywhere but chose to do so in a manner that would inconvenience EVERYONE else. OFC they acted all offended and innocent, yet they knew the location, they walked passed everyone waiting patiently to get 'the' shot and starting setting up their zen spot in front of a people holding cameras...

Exactly. That's why there are queues. Because other people are viewed as undesirable. So one at a time, they take a picture of themselves alone. And in the process tell others where to stand, turning free land into a designated queuing area. It's obnoxious and actually quite chilling and anti-human.

Exactly, in the past people didn't try and monopolise the view - you just accepted that there would be other people in the pictures at the top as well as you. Now there is a weird sense of entitlement that because they are there everyone should wait so that the world can think that only they are there.

There is an easy answer - go on a cloudy day then the instagram wankers tend to stay at home.

JulietteHasAGun · 26/08/2026 13:21

Just seen a video of a queue jumper the entire queue is chanting “join the queue”. Then a bloke at the top stands in front of him and tries to block the way and when the queue jumper tries to dodge past him grabs him and tries to physically manhandle him. I’d have called the police at that point and had him arrested!

boundarysponge · 26/08/2026 14:18

I think it’s part of a bigger problem. Our National Parks are really struggling with the numbers of visitors who now travel into them especially at weekends in summer. When you live in these areas it’s very difficult at times to go about your daily business due to clogged roads and bad parking. It is so much busier since COVID. I don’t know what the answer is because there is an economic need for the visitors due to the dependence on tourism.
In other countries access to certain places is limited by permit. I really think there needs to be some consideration of this for environmental protection.

Call the police to arrest someone at the top of Snowdon? 😂

There probably needs to be a big stampdown on illegal parking, for a start - and more restrictions on roadside parking in places. Of course some people may wail about the cost of car parks in the National parks but essentially they serve as entry ticket and to limit numbers coming by car.

People forming orderly queues in pubs too? This queuing kink is really getting out of hand.

Everyone knows you just shimmy up to the bar and assume that the barman/woman is keeping an eye on who's due to be served next. And if you're feeling in a kindly mood one might say 'I think this person was here before me'.

HauntedBungalow · 26/08/2026 19:23

They're all spending so much time on their phones they forget that it's perfectly possible, in the physical world, to observe in which order five different people arrived at a bar.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of taking photos of him and ideally following him down and getting a car reg and reporting it. no way would I be letting someone assault me and just get away with it 🤷‍♀️

though i didn’t appreciate there were geographical limitations on calling the police. If they have time to arrest people for saying hurty words on the internet. They can get their bum out to the countryside.

Maybe they could meet the miscreant at the bottom if you can tell them which route they’re going down. I assume if there’s a murder they might actually walk up. Heck they could take the train up.

MadMAGA · 26/08/2026 21:28

The police could arrive on the train, like in the Wind in the Willows.

I'm going on Wednesday and I won't be queuing! I am really looking forward to it and think the hike looks great, so I don't mean to sound mean, but it isn't like doing so is some miraculous adventure that no one would believe if you didn't have photographic evidence!
It just seems like an odd situation to put yourself in: queuing on a mountain summit.

How was it?

Kizmet1 · 27/08/2026 08:39

Hillarious · 27/08/2026 08:27

How was it?

I hiked the Miners' Track and reached the summit at about 4.30pm and there was initially no queue.
I walked up and touched the trig, and took a very quick snap of my hand on it to text my partner, and then moved away so others could get in, but I have to admit as soon as a train pulled in, people piled out and rushed straight to the trig and that was when it became more difficult to get a space.
I have no problem with the train option (I'm hoping to bring my mum in spring, and she would never make it on foot so I'm glad she will get to experience the views despite reduced mobility) but I did notice that most of the people who got the train were clearly there to get their shot. They'd dressed nicely, full make up, and they wanted to take their time and make sure they looked how they wanted to look. One lady was up there for ages because she was waiting for a cloud to move (!!!) and that caused some tension.
I was too exhausted to care about taking photos of myself (I had taken a few selfies on the walk at different points, but I'm just a sweaty mess in them!) and I was so elated to have made it to the top, the picture didn't matter.
I loved the hike though, definitely one of my favourite things I've ever done and still this morning I'm so proud and happy!

Whammyammy · 27/08/2026 08:41

My husbands friend is a regular climber and mountain rescue volunteer. He was on about this and said just skip it. Tge queue is for the insta/fb brigade that spend ages tsking selfies. He says starlight to the cairn and ignore the influencers etc.

Same as idiots that form a line to a bar, I walk straight to the bar.
