Overhead neighbours talking about me?

crazykatzz · 24/08/2026 17:10

I have always got on with my neighbour who lives a few a doors down.

I have babysat one of her kids and also looked after her cat when she goes on holiday.

She does have a mean girl vibe about her though and she does have a habit of talking about others.

I asked her to do look after my cats and do my bins whilst I was away with DC and she happily agreed.

Whilst I was loading the car I overheard and another neighbour complaining about me calling on my cats every night.

Convo was like

Neighbour 1 "Did you hear her yelling for her cats again?"

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "I heard it but went back to bed".

Neigbour 2 "I can't believe how her neighbours haven't said anything, it's every effing night, literally by their next door neighbours windows every night, literally, I am absolutely sick of it, wakes me up every effing night".

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "Yeah I know as it's as the back it is really loud."

I popped my head up from the passenger seat and they stopped talking.

For reference Neigbour 2 would regularly
play her music at for hours on end so it was ironic hearing her complain about me. I also helped her with her gardening.

I feel this is very 2 faced and want to step back and wondering why they didn't approach me directly instead of talking about me.?

AIBU to not talk to them when I get back of holiday?

I do suffer from anxiety so not sure if I am over reacting here.

Of course she doesn’t like you because you are waking her up shouting in your garden and waking her up. Go and find them much earlier or just leave them out. Cats can be injured in the day it’s not just at night.

PepsiBook · 25/08/2026 19:54

My neighbour also calls her cat in LOUDLY every bloody night. It's irritating.

I think I'd be popping round with some flowers and saying you overheard them (which they already know if they saw you) and that you're sorry you've been disturbing them.

This.

Sometimes late evening and multiple times as I have several cats.

I think it was mentioned as I was in between calling the cats in and loading the car.

Is this a joke? Serious question. If I heard that conversation I would think how annoying I had been and stop calling for the cats. Not that the ladies were being mean.

@LAMPS1 Aww thank you so much, your reply has made me feel a lot better.

I never meant any malice or harm by calling the cats, it's just that I worry about them being out all night.
They are my furbabies.

The other neighbour dosent really like me despite me saying hello, trying to talk to her etc, taking in her parcels and helping her with her gardening.

It began way before I got the cats so hearing them talk just made me feel I was being ganged up on.

get them in earlier in the evening. Its very rude and inconsiderate to be shouting late in the evening waking people up.

Yupstillhere · 25/08/2026 19:17

Well at least now you know you're annoying then. Either carry on or do something else less annoying.

Dependsoncontext · 25/08/2026 19:03

I wouldn't be ignoring anyone or sending them to Coventry - too much effort. I'd be thinking "are they just gossiping or do they have a legitimate complaint that I need to hear?" Only you know what the situation is so adjust accordingly, If their complaint is legitimate, learn from it, adjust your late night cat shouting and move on. If it isn't then maybe distance yourself but ignoring people and punishing with withdrawal isn't sensible adult behaviour.

JT12 · 25/08/2026 19:03

I think we all talk about other people. Even our children, our husbands and our parents/ siblings. I know it’s wrong but it’s also part of life. If you are good friends I would try not to worry too much about it

Don’t let your cats outside then?

Or if you don’t want to keep them as house cats then just accept that they’ll come and go as they please as cats do.

Twolittlebirds75 · 25/08/2026 18:52

Basically you can't choose your neighbours, whether you own or rent.
Just ignore and crack on with your life. They obviously have too much time on their hands and not enough in their own lives so are focusing on you. They are not worth another thought.

My friend rattles a treat tin. Gosh you should see those cars run!!!!!

Merrycritictime · 25/08/2026 18:23

Are you proposing to let her look after your cats (presumably she won’t call them in late at night 😁) and put out your bins (presumably not late at night either!) then never speak to her again once you get back from your hols? I honestly think that’s bizarre. Cats crap in neighbours’ gardens, (which can potentially cause toxoplasmosis as it did for my young son who picked ip cat droppings helping my mother with her garden..her neighbours have several cats), run the risk of getting lost or injured, or causing traffic accidents, and they kill native wildlife. To add to that you wake your neighbours up calling them in late at night. They should be in your house, or don’t have cats (outdoor cats are banned in Sydney because they are killing machines and they can also cause accidents on the road plus their droppings pollute the area). If this seems harsh try having an oncologist tell you it’s very likely your DS has Hodgkin’s Disease due to huge neck swellings and being very ill for months…all caused by cat faeces. And they kill birds. If you can’t keep them in I really believe you should keep quiet late at night. And if you don’t speak to your neighbours when you get back…who’ll look after them then?

ThreadGuardDog · 25/08/2026 18:06

When you come back from holiday l would buy some flowers for your neighbour who’s looking after your cats and tell them you overheard the conversation, didn’t realise it was so annoying and that you’ll try quieter methods in future. I think you’ve clearly been unaware that you’re disturbing them - plus, not every situation requires a nuclear response.

I call my cat in. Doesn’t seem that weird to me.

OP is waking people up!

I text the neighbour looking after my cats to ensure all was well with the cats and the house.

I apologised for the noise and that I wasn't aware it was annoying people as nobody had mentioned anything?

We are both members of our neighbourhood What's App and Facebook groups and nothing has ever been mentioned.

If I had know I would of stopped as I like to get on with people and I am so embarrassed.

You needed telling that shouting in the street every single evening was annoying and rude?

CeciliaMars · 25/08/2026 06:03

You would annoy the hell out of me too, yelling got your cats every evening!

TheTwinklyLemur · 25/08/2026 05:51

Is there a quieter way you can c0all your cats? To lighten the thread, my friend had a cat called Richard, so called because she had another cat called Tom and a son called Harry, so it would have been Tom,Dck and Hary, but she didn't want to be shutting "Dick" down the street

They like you so they didn't want to say anything. They were just having a moan. Don't worry. Good of you to have told them and now shrug it off.

ThatWaryOchreJoker · 25/08/2026 00:17

They're not furbabies. They're animals. Animals that can be out at night, doing their own thing, coming in through a catflap when it suits them. They don't need you to call. You need to work on your need to call!
But anyway, you've realised, and that's good.

mumsntt · 24/08/2026 23:08

youre the problem

Livpool · 24/08/2026 22:44

Well it is annoying for your neighbours. You’d be a bit pathetic to ignore them, especially the one looking after your cats.

Thats fantastic OP.
You no longer need to be embarrassed.
We all make mistakes and recognising them and saying sorry and not blaming others is a very mature thing to do.
Stop worrying about it now and put it out of your mind.
It takes guts to say a sincere sorry … and it can be hard work to get along with people in your neighbourhood so you should be pleased with yourself.

JapanesePotWeed · 24/08/2026 22:29

Whenever I hear new pet names being called over and over again at the neighbours, I write them down (I've had Win, Spicy, Fudge) and then report to the police.
Crack heads looking for their dealer sound virtually indistinguishable from cat heads looking for their Winny and Patch.

OnTheBoardwalk · 24/08/2026 22:24

We all moan about neighbours I do

have you said what time you call them in at?

I get my sisters in at 7 in summer with a shake of some dreamies and a quick shout. One is usually in the garden the other one usually sleeping somewhere cool.
