Overhead neighbours talking about me?

crazykatzz · 24/08/2026 17:10

I have always got on with my neighbour who lives a few a doors down.

I have babysat one of her kids and also looked after her cat when she goes on holiday.

She does have a mean girl vibe about her though and she does have a habit of talking about others.

I asked her to do look after my cats and do my bins whilst I was away with DC and she happily agreed.

Whilst I was loading the car I overheard and another neighbour complaining about me calling on my cats every night.

Convo was like

Neighbour 1 "Did you hear her yelling for her cats again?"

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "I heard it but went back to bed".

Neigbour 2 "I can't believe how her neighbours haven't said anything, it's every effing night, literally by their next door neighbours windows every night, literally, I am absolutely sick of it, wakes me up every effing night".

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "Yeah I know as it's as the back it is really loud."

I popped my head up from the passenger seat and they stopped talking.

For reference Neigbour 2 would regularly
play her music at for hours on end so it was ironic hearing her complain about me. I also helped her with her gardening.

I feel this is very 2 faced and want to step back and wondering why they didn't approach me directly instead of talking about me.?

AIBU to not talk to them when I get back of holiday?

I do suffer from anxiety so not sure if I am over reacting here.
AIBU

My in-law' neighbour did this. ROSIE! ROSSSSIE! COME IN ROSIE, WHERE ARE YOU GIRL. No response, repeat in 10 min. Over and over.

Don't be that person

BognorRegenia · 27/08/2026 09:21

You're focusing on the wrong thing here.

They are well within their rights to have a little moan about something that is incredibly annoying. It is a good thing you overheard and now you need to stop disturbing your poor neighbours.

I have just got back and the neighbour complaining has loud music blasting tonight.

Knock on their door if it's bothering you and ask them to turn it down.

Fuckmyliferightnow · 26/08/2026 10:50

My old neighbour used to do this between 10-11 at night when I was trying to sleep, it’s maddening and inconsiderate. I think they intended for you to overhear as they’re probably fed up.
I don’t know what it is about pet owners, they think everyone else cares about their animal as much as they do.

Greenshed · 26/08/2026 10:38

Cats are resilient creatures and will come back when they are ready, hungry, etc. I don’t think it is really necessary for you to be shouting loudly for your cats to come in several times, late at night. This must be incredibly annoying for your neighbours if it is waking them up.
I think a cat flap is definitely the answer.
As regards the loud music, when and how often does this occur? If it, too, is late at night and disturbing your sleep, then you have good reason to bring the matter to her attention. If it is only occasionally and in the day time/early evening, then perhaps you need to accept it unless it is every single day and the whole street can hear it. If that is so, you can report it, especially if other neighbours are bothered by it.

OP is waking people up!

Tbh the neighbour playing loud music is MUCH more antisocial

liveforsummer · 26/08/2026 07:06

Sounds like neighbour looking after cats was just going along with the conversation and was truthful as it clearly is loud and annoying. Doesn’t sii pi nd like she was that bothered but gave her experience when it was mentioned by others. Don’t just stop talking to people just apologise and move on. Mention the music of it is bothering you

Franjipanl8r · 25/08/2026 23:59

Get a cat flap, shouting on the street every night sounds really annoying for your neighbours.

Teanbiscuits33 · 25/08/2026 23:22

Your neighbour looking after your cats wasn’t rude so I don’t know what the problem was? If she said ‘’I know, she’s an inconsiderate cow! I effing hate her!’’ I’d have more sympathy, but it was the second neighbour that was rude, and I can see where she’s coming from if you’re waking her every night, but she could have raised it with you politely. She’s allowed to vent, though.

Time to take heed and get a cat flap.

NearlyNewNonny · 25/08/2026 23:15

Why aren't you saying what time you shout them in and how many cats do you have?

Littledesi · 25/08/2026 23:06

7 or 8 pm calling your cats in is okay. My cat is so dang loud at 4am he wakes up the neighbors himself when he wants in. Some neighbors yell when kids too loud.. it is what it is. Pretend like u didnt even hear the conversation. And keep your gaurd up when u see them

Sometimes late evening and multiple times as I have several cats.

I think it was mentioned as I was in between calling the cats in and loading the car.

There are strong crazy cat lady vibes here. It's not normal to shout for your cats every evening if you live close to other people - is there any way you could stop doing this ? Perhaps this is your wake up call.

AmberPeaches · 25/08/2026 22:19

Maybe be a bit more considerate of your neighbours when it comes to calling for your “fur babies” 🤢

grinandslothit · 25/08/2026 22:16

Multiple people have suggested installing a cat flap that is the solution not calling your cats every night install the cat flap everybody is happy

Thecomedyclub · 25/08/2026 22:14

It depends on the time you are calling your cats…. If before 8pm then ok, after that, bloody annoying. Get a cat flap.

MsGreying · 25/08/2026 21:51

roseymoira · 24/08/2026 17:14

Are you outside shouting for cats every night? What time? Seems very antisocial

Yeah get them a cat flap.

Azandme · 25/08/2026 21:36

crazykatzz · 25/08/2026 21:26

I have just got back and the neighbour complaining has loud music blasting tonight.

It's not that late yet.

BOTH of them said you had woken them up shouting for your cats, so if your neighbour is up and playing music at 9.35pm, how late have you been shouting?

As for saying that you would have stopped if someone told you - most people don't need telling not to shout outside at night because it's antisocial.

I think if you are calling them in at say 8pm, no problem.
However, based on you actually waking your neighbours I'm assuming you are doing this past 10pm, so yes you sre an absolute bloody nuisance and I'm not surprised your neighbours are pissed off.

isthisnormal1971 · 25/08/2026 21:23

Yes you are being unsociable shouting for 7 cats every night. I’d moan too. They weren’t even saying anything bad your neighbour who is your friend was entertaining the chat. What do you want her to say?

pineapplecrushed · 25/08/2026 21:18

but how can you possibly not realise that shouting at night is annoying?

Vallmo47 · 25/08/2026 21:17

It’s possible to be on a friendly basis with someone and still find their behaviour sometimes irritating, OP. I’m sure it wasn’t nice to hear and I’d probably stew over it a little bit like you have here, but then I’d take the lesson and also learn from it. Clearly me calling the cats in every night is louder than I think and I will try to be more respectful in future, the end.
Does doing someone a favour mean you cannot ever get annoyed by something? Do you never get annoyed by friends? I find it more unusual you haven’t ever spoken about someone’s bad habits. Neighbour 1 was just stating her opinion on something you do that keeps her up at night and neighbour 2 confirmed they can hear it too. So put yourself in their shoes and change that behaviour. If you have an issue with loud music, address it to the person directly rather than say about it here perhaps? Nothing is being resolved at the moment.

MMAS · 25/08/2026 21:06

You forgot to mention the age of your cats. If they are young then they can be trained to come to a whistle. Have done it successfully with all mine albeit they were kittens. You suffer from anxiety yet manage to interact enough with your neighbour to do their gardening. That does not make sense. Are you not part of the Whatsapp group. In any case most cats cannot be managed and will come and go as they please so no need to be loud in asking them to come home if it annoys your neighbours. Cats can be trained despite people saying otherwise.

anon666 · 25/08/2026 20:27

To be fair to her, it sounds more like an awkward response than a massive endorsement of Neighbour 2s grumble.

She wasn't stirring the pot.

If i ever overheard things I'm not meant to, I think what would I do in their shoes. Often its just not wanting to make a big point.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/08/2026 20:24
