To think it’s only the older generations that have strong feelings about Harry and Meghan?

Does anyone younger actually care at all? I just don’t understand the strength of feeling at all. I don’t know them, who knows what is true and what isn’t. It’s just family drama that so many families unfortunately have. I just don’t quite understand how some people are so passionately angry about it all? It’s just celebrity gossip essentially, who cares.

In my workplace we vary in age from 18-68 and we often discuss the daily news whilst sorting out the newspapers and the younger lot don’t have a good opinion of Harry & Meghan either. Interestingly they do hold the late Queen in high regard and I remember a lot of them reading the coverage of her death in every newspaper and they’ve all watched the crown as well which I was surprised at.

Dontcallmescarface · 24/08/2026 13:23

I'm 60 and I know nobody of my age who cares about H&M or the rest of the royals.

FoodieDench · 24/08/2026 13:23

Yeah, the over 60s I think. Obviously you're not saying that all old people have a strong opinion on Harry and Meghan; not sure why so many people on this thread have taken it that way. But then again, the over 60s also often think that a parent can do no wrong and children owe their parents a relationship forever, despite how cruel they are, so I think they're personally offended that Harry stood up to his dad.

Tortephant · 24/08/2026 13:23

According to you I'm 'older':

  1. never heard any of my friends, family or colleagues discuss it bar one some time ago. She was disappointed in DoS for not embracing the opportunity she had and delivering progressive change and highlighting alternative causes.
  2. I'm certainly not angry in the way you suggest. I do find the lack of disrespect astonishing and also the contradictions. I they want a quiet private life, have one. If they don't then relish what they can achieve. Moaning, complaining, and so on has no place.
InterestedDad37 · 24/08/2026 13:20

As an old boomer 🙋 I'd just like to register that I really don't give a monkey's about them, and I'd like us to be a republic anyway 😀

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/08/2026 13:19

Im over 50 and not bothered about them. The hate some people have them is unhinged, but people hate strangers on the internet as a hobby nowadays.

JuneSoon · 24/08/2026 13:16

YABU to post here about them; post it in Royal

Don't act like the thread police. OP posed an AIBU. Plus she won't get any nuance over there.

I'm over 60, think the Susexes have behaved abominably towards the RF and made a complete mess of life in the US and wonder what their motives are coming to UK.

I don't actually care, I'm just human!

KamikazePigeon · 24/08/2026 13:16

I'm over 50 and don't care about the Royals in the slightest, but do feel some sympathy for HAM. The press demonised Meghan almost from the start, imo, and people lap it up.

RaininSummer · 24/08/2026 13:13

Well I'm over sixty and don't give a shit about them. I would think it's more likely to be the reality show generations which like following their incessant drama.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 24/08/2026 13:10

I'm late 60s and couldn't give a toss about any of them. It's a bit of a generalisation, don't you think?

DogsSave · 24/08/2026 13:08

Anecdotally, it’s true for us. My kids and their friends who are 17-25 have no interest in any Royals and don’t understand the dislike of Harry and Meghan. I’m 50 ish and I’m aware of the royal goings on but don’t have strong feelings about Harry and Meghan. Both of our sets of parents hate Harry and Meghan and they tell us their friends feel the same. We know an older women who post their dislike online, including on mumsnet apparently. I’m convinced I know her username and if I’m right, she has lost the plot over Harry and Meghan.

dolwop · 24/08/2026 12:43

Good point, over 50 maybe?

Yes I agree it’s just gossip and light entertainment, but some people seem so passionately angry about it, like it’s personal?

People who value and respect the royal family have a view on them.
They have become celebs, but were originally royals.

WildlyInappropriate · 24/08/2026 13:08

I’m in my 50s and I actually quite like them, but I’m not at all invested in the drama. I think from an historical point of view what’s happened with them is interesting, as is their decision to return; I am vaguely interested in the longer term implications for the monarchy and how that might change as traditional royal roles shift and change. I work in heritage and understand what a significant contribution to the economy tourism makes, and how much of that is bound up in the monarchy and its history, so I do think that there is a degree of importance to what happens among the senior royals.

Yetone · 24/08/2026 13:06

70s and couldn’t care less about them. I want a republic with a democratically elected head of state.

Baldrapunzel · 24/08/2026 13:06

I was out with a group of friends at the weekend 40 - 60ish and someone brought the subject up. No one particularly interested, general consensus that they're a couple of overprivileged drama llamas then we moved on to more interesting topics.

Openmouthinsertfood · 24/08/2026 13:02

Over 50 and couldn't give a shit.

Beachbeach · 24/08/2026 13:00

No I’m 35 and have very strong feelings that they should fuck off back to USA, grifters

MasterBeth · 24/08/2026 12:59

It's not about age

It's about whether you've been radicalised by the Daily Express and GB News agenda.

I am 58 and genuinely have no idea why we're supposed to hate Meghan Markle, other than the general racist tone of those outlets.

Chemenger · 24/08/2026 12:56

I’m over 60 and have never been in a conversation about H & M. I don’t know anyone with any interest in them,

Genevieva · 24/08/2026 12:54

I don’t think about them very often. I don’t have any emotions towards them. I do have strong opinions about how taxpayer money is spent, about the importance of upholding the law and the judicial system. That includes any decision to provide or fund their defence after a court has made it clear that there is no case for such funding.

Boodahh · 24/08/2026 12:52

What counts as older? Im in my 50s and don't care. Dad is late 80s and doesn't care.

I do know a lady in her late 70s who is obsessed by H and M. Mainly MM really.

There's a thread on here about H and M, but we're never going to know the ages of the contributors.

Epoisses · 24/08/2026 12:52

Im late 60s and dont give a toss about any of them

WildGarlicSoup · 24/08/2026 12:52

I think you're right.

I had a lot of news stories on my Facebook feed about this over the weekend (due to my algorithms) and it seems to be mostly women who appear 60+ years. I think some are really obviously trolls - and bots, though.

Some comments are just awful and ridiculously vicious.

My children and their girlfriends (early 20's) didn't really know who they were when I mentioned it.

I do find it hard to understand why people care; it's ridiculous to be so offended and angry on behalf of people they have never met. QEII dealt with all the accusations around the Megxit era in the ultimate adult manner and that was 6 years ago now...

FunnyOrca · 24/08/2026 12:51

I think the royal family are more important generally to the older generation. I think the people who can remember the Queen as something other than an old lady.

Dandeloosha · 24/08/2026 12:51

In general I think the older generation are much more interested in the royals full stop, but there was much less of a celebrity culture when they (we? I’m 58) were growing up so the royals were the celebrities and were cooed over in much the same way that Zendaya and the Kardashians are cooed over now. I guess they’re also popular with people who read supermarket magazines - Take a Break, Woman’s Own - that type of thing - and the tabloids as they’re plastered all over those if they do so much as scratch their ears. Those two demographics may heavily overlap. I am not interested in them, but I find the posts on here with people getting their knickers in a complete twist about them absolutely fascinating. There’s a PhD in there somewhere.
