My “comeback” was equal levels rude?

I am from a Mediterranean culture that can be highly misogynistic and a bit old fashioned especially in regards to women. I was talking to my partner’s aunt at a gathering (same background) when the aunt asked me my age. I knew she was trying to figure out if I’m passed it. I thought it was incredibly rude. And frankly I was just very over being judged for being 32 and unmarried. Have focused on career and travelling. So in response I asked what her bmi was. She’s overweight but nothing extreme.

Anyway, I got a phone call from boyfriend’s cousin who had a massive go at me. And I’m now not allowed to step foot in the Aunts house. Which is where everyone gathers. Bf obviously isn’t pleased.

NO ONE in bf’s family (his parents and siblings) thinks what I did was right. My mum said it was totally fair to highlight the Aunt’s rudeness. Sick to death of people judging me.

I normally bite my lip. I know it was nasty. I don’t know why she’s the only one who has a right to be offended and garner all the sympathy.

OP posts:

What a nasty spiteful thing to say. Is your BF furious. Because I would be if you said anything like that to my aunt.

Being able to be respectful to elders doesn't make you Madonna ffs. It's like the bare minimum.

Do you find it that hard not to lash out and be spiteful when you feel aggrieved?

Is it time to get back to serving your man? We wouldn’t want the men in your family to think you’re only worth a fuck now, would we.

Movingonup313 · 24/08/2026 13:33

I would have asked the cousin, why did AUNT ask me my age. [And waited for the truth to come...]

She knows your age, or rough age. She knows her views on unmarried 30 something females. She was having a dig. She asked a personal question and so did you.

Respect your elders is held high..... but respect is earned and she didnt earn it.

I support you.

Gengha · 24/08/2026 13:33

It was a bit rude but I do also think good on you, if she’s judgy sounds like she needs put in her place anyway.

nf4t1mf · 24/08/2026 13:33

Your aunt doesn’t know your age?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/08/2026 13:33

She asked a personal question that is usually ‘not done’, and considered impolite, so IMO you were entitled to retaliate.

However you were VVU to say ‘step foot’. It’s SET foot! Where TF did this aberration come from - as if I didn’t know - from across the pond, as usual.

Why do elders deserve respect just for being old?

nomas · 24/08/2026 13:32

You can infer all you like, but the OP has not said that.

Similarly, OP can infer that the aunt thinks she's over the hill, but the aunt has not said that.

Do you not see the irony in your posts?

“a” Madonna.

Madonna made a career out of not respecting her elders!

WildLeader · 24/08/2026 13:32

@Rebes you know the culture, you know this woman and you know what she was doing

she knew what she was asking.

she won’t be asking you again now will she.

ignore everything thrown at you. You’ve just put down your boundary and nobody is going to mess with you again.

I don’t know the nationality you’re from, but I lived in Egypt once and this sentiment is absolutely rife there. You’re literally on the scrap heap if you’re female over 30. You’re treated like shit because clearly you’re desperate and will have to accept whatever awful bloke and his sleazy advances comes your way.

yes it’s rude what you said, but you know the implications of what she was asking were way worse because it wasn’t called for.

are you sure about being involved with this family?

Constantinoodle · 24/08/2026 13:32

nomas · 24/08/2026 13:30

So why is she so keen to go back?

Again, does she say that in any of her posts?

I’ve never really understood this thing about age. Why is it rude to ask someone’s age? That only works if you think there’s something bad about being older – the OP used the phrase ‘past it’. ‘On the shelf’ is another one. Older people in my culture can sometimes be seen as invalid, not worth listening to but I don’t buy into that and I’m always very happy to share my age.

Fat shaming is a nasty thing to do though.

This is so disingenuous. You know exactly why it's rude because you explain it: "Older people in my culture can sometimes be seen as invalid, not worth listening to." The fact that you personally claim not to feel that way doesn't negate the fact that it's rude for that reason.

And if you can understand why it's rude to point out someone's weight, you can understand why it's rude to point out someone's age. There's nothing inherently wrong with being fat either so by the same logic it should be fine to ask someone's BMI as well.

Ryanstartedthefire2 · 24/08/2026 13:31

Your reply was way ruder. She could have been asking out of general interest and not being judgemental (even if she was, there was a possibility that she wasnt) whereas you were clearly saying she was fat! You are very touchy about your age. What does "passed it" mean? Childbearing? You have a decade so why so intense?

Her words upset you. And I understand why you lashed out. But. Your retort doesn’t balance things out. I understand about sticking up for yourself but in this instance the best thing to do would be to walk away. Let her words wash over you and leave it. The aggravation of the aftermath is not worth it. Let someone be judgmental. That’s their issue not yours. Their riddle to solve.

WellThatIsABitMad · 24/08/2026 13:31

Very quick and sharp, well done OP. Will make her think twice about her misogynistic questions in future. My MIL was a misogynist too, they aren’t as uncommon as you might think.

Constantinoodle · 24/08/2026 13:31

Whaleandsnail6 · 24/08/2026 13:30

But op knows she isn't old.

I just don't think being asked your age ever justifies trying to fat shame someone and its sad that so many on here think its appropriate

Again, in certain cultures being unmarried in your thirties is considered to be a source of shame, so within the context provided by the OP, then yes, she would be considered old.

Consider the context put before you, not your own.

Savvysix1984 · 24/08/2026 12:40

Asking someone their age is a pretty normal part of a conversation. You’re 32 not 92. I don’t think it was rude to ask if it was part of a conversation. Asking about her bmi was just weird.

It really isn’t, not where I’m from anyway.

Lexibletheflexible · 24/08/2026 13:30

Constantinoodle · 24/08/2026 13:29

No we wouldn’t. Most women don’t want to be treated like either Madonnas or whores, which, based upon your posts, appears to be the only two forms of existence open to the women in your family.

Hint: none.

Constantinoodle · 24/08/2026 13:29

Lexibletheflexible · 24/08/2026 13:27

I disagree. A lot of you would pray for the hardworking, respectful, attentive men in my family. Half of you know here that you have to work your arses off alongside everything else because your husband will do fuck all for you if you break up.

It would be a disgrace in my family if a man's co-parent was anything but flourishing

No we wouldn’t. Most women don’t want to be treated like either Madonnas or whores, which, based upon your posts, appears to be the only two forms of existence open to the women in your family.

IndestructibleRubberplants · 24/08/2026 13:29

In response to you're very tall - my sister used to say and you're very fat, or you have a big nose, ears or what ever feature she felt they were likely to be most insecure about.

Asking someone their age is a pretty normal part of a conversation.

It may be in some social circles, but in others it most definitely is not. I was brought up to believe it is extremely rude to ask any adult their age.
