2 Bottles of Salt! Why?

Ordered a little grocery delivery via an app. I wasn't feeling well and needed a few bits. Opened the bag to find completely the wrong order. There clearly was a mix up where I got someone else's shop, and they got mine. So I was able to get a full refund thankfully, and was told to keep the wrong shop.

Went through the free shop, there were pretty typical items, not what I wanted, but can use:

  • 4l of semi skimmed milk
  • loaf of seeded bread (nice bread)
  • 2 packs of sliced chicken
  • 3 packets of fridge raiders
  • 3 packets of mini chocolate oranges
  • 2 large packs of anchor spreadable butter?
  • 2 large bottles of salt????

I'm sure whoever got my shop is equally disappointed about the wraps, mayonnaise, egg custard tarts and 2 cartons of cranberry juice I ordered.

I consider the delivery shops to be a sort of emergency top up interim type shop. What kind of emergency requires 2 packs of butter and 2 bottles of salt? 1 pack of butter, sure, 1 bottle of salt, ok? But 2? It's the salt that really puzzles me. Why so much salt? What do you get in an emergency mini shop?

Anyway I'm going to try fridge raiders for the first time in years, I seem to recall they are as dry as old socks.

I don’t drive and supermarket deliveries often need a minimum amount so I get stuff in bulk for the cupboard that I know I’ll use eventually to reach the minimum for free delivery. Usually it’s alcohol haha, but sometimes it’s cupboard staples.

I use a lot of salt (due to health condition, I need more salt than a normal person), so I take salt everywhere. I have a big thing of salt at work. I have salt in a smaller container in my purse and in my rucksack. I’ve also been known to travel with soy sauce too. 😂 I take salt with me on holiday because a lot of holiday lets don’t have salt. So if I was ordering one for home, I’d definitely probably order an extra for some other location where I often need salt.

Reminds me that I once had a funny Amazon mix up. I got a parcel with someone else’s name but my address. It contained a giant pack of Tena for Men pads. 😂 The name was unique enough that I googled him and he lived about 300 miles away. Somewhere there was a man desperate for his discreet Amazon delivery of incontinence pads who must have been very perplexed to have received 10 litres of pickling vinegar. 🤣 I never did get it rectified and I never made those pickled eggs.

I am feeling very old, what with this and the thread yesterday where dozens of posters claimed not to know you could buy dried parsley in a jar. When I was growing up this sort of salt was the only kind most of us ever saw, and fresh herbs were not the norm either. Wondering now how soon there will be a thread about sugar and someone will claim not to know what it is as they only use organic agave syrup.

I always get a extra butter - well margarine.
Anchor butter here it $8.70 its luxury.
Salt for playdough?

It’s too tall to be a tub. It is shaped like a bottle. It has a pouring spout. The shop calls it a bottle.

I stock up on it and keep them in the cupboard so I rarely run out of salt. Only have to order it once a year or so.

Never had to use that much but if you sprinkle salt on your sink and use a cut I. Half lemon to spread it around it acts as a scrub and looks and smells fab!!

I get through a ton of butter. When my son practiced his GCSE food tech, we used 10 packs in a week.

Anyway I’m intrigued by what the people not buying salt in bottles are doing. Does it come in boxes or something? I would use bottled salt for boiling water or seasoning chips. Everywhere that I shop seems to only sell basic salt in bottles?

Well I would never refer to that container as a bottle. That seems weird to me.
I don't use that kind of salt when I'm cooking; I buy fine sea salt for cooking (looks just like that kind of salt) and that comes in a cardboard drum. As a condiment I use sea salt flakes or rock salt chunks and put them in a grinder. They often come in boxes. I also like trying flavoured salts (lemon, garlic, seaweed etc) and they tend to come in little tubs. Salt for sprinkling by my back door when it's icy, I buy 1kg bags and decant into a plastic box.
Not a "bottle" for any situation.

Best before? How odd. It's a mineral. It would never occur to me that it could have a best before date.

It doesn't go off or anything but it's often difficult to keep salt in its original condition over a long period, especially in a kitchen where temperature and humidity fluctuates, so it's fair to say it's 'at its best' before a certain date. Ours always needs to last way longer than the date as we don't use it much, so we've found it's best to keep it on top of the radiator so it doesn't get too cold or damp

I have been known to buy fancy sea salt and some table salt at the same time. That must have seemed quite a salty order.

I always have two packs of butter in my shop - they will last me a month.
As for the salt, I keep a large container of standard table salt in case slugs make their way indoors.
And I wouldn't buy skimmed milk to save my life - the devil's liquid. Full fat all the way for me!
