Everyday phrases that piss me off

As the title goes , a couple of examples:

It only costs xxx - What an incredibly ignorant thing to say in this day and age of mass inequality. On any given day there's a bullshit thread on here comparing pension plans and the amount of hundreds of thousands people have saved compared to the ones who have nothing saved.

Well I've never seen/heard that before - well Jackie, I've never seen anyone abuse a wheelchair user or a trans person or a Jewish person in my own life, but I believe that it happens, despite my not witnessing it.

Feel free to rant about other stuff that people are willfully oblivious to.

Can you 'socialise the deck'.

What's wrong with 'email the PowerPoint slides to the relevant people'

Makes me want to turn myself inside out with rage!

IdaGlossop · 24/08/2026 19:24

'In this day and age' (sorry OP) = now
'They (parents) share three children' - have three children
The words 'hubby' and 'hubster'
'Picky bits' and 'picky tea'
'Slip into something more comfortable' - total turn-off, 1970s Penthouse vibe
Other half, better half and lady wife - twee and patronising
Hollibobs - 🤮🤮🤮🤮
'Bits' and 'privates' as in 'genitals' - also twee, use the actual words!
'Number one priority' - tautology; a priority is in first position
'Kiddies' - also twee
'Inappropriate' - over-used and vague

I've known several people who misuse "mortified" to mean "very angry".

Yes! This makes me very angry.

H202too · 24/08/2026 19:08

As I said on the other thread,
Giving. E.g A chair reminds them of one they may see at the dentist.
They say the chair is giving dentist.

HalzTangz · 24/08/2026 19:07

Babe or Hun when said by a total stranger

MyDpsanarse · 24/08/2026 18:52

Side hustle for a way of making extra money, it always sounds like your doing something vaguely illegal or secret

Redragtoabull · 24/08/2026 18:46

If my DD and friends mention something minor, I mean minor giving them PTSD one more time, I'm going to go fucking batshit on them. The missed of it enrages me

Gettingbysomehow · 24/08/2026 18:45

Anything Jamie Oliver says.

BurntBroccoli · 24/08/2026 18:36

A bold “lip”.

”Let’s unpack this”.

Can I show you my slide deck? WTF happened to PowerPoint presentation or just presentation!

Math. It’s maths in the UK.

Reach out.

Amazing . Wish I lived in their world as I find very few things/ experiences amazing .
Literally
Bro . Gangster talk in the suburbs
Basically

I follow someone on X who describes everything as "amazing".
Every meal is amazing
Every trip/holiday is amazing
His wife always looks amazing
No Phil, it may be good but everything can't be amazing.
I'm pretty sure he probably has a Live Laugh Live sign in his house too

igelkott2026 · 24/08/2026 18:17

Waitlist instead of waiting list

"Jumping" on a call. Why on earth would I jump? (I know, I am taking it far too literally)

Agree with "cheeky" - why is it cheeky to have a glass of wine?

My actual pet hate, despite not being normally remotely pedantic about things is quite unique, very unique or a bit unique.
It’s either unique or it’s not. And it only annoys me when it’s someone who should know better saying it - like a tv presenter or my ex boss a school HT.

I see your ‘a bit unique’ and I raise you ‘almost exactly’. It is either exact or it’s not.

Cheeky. Cheeky Nando’s, cheeky drink etc. No. Just no.

Amazing - used to mean nice/quite good. Amazing should be reserved for things that actually amaze you.

Me too! Can't stand it!

Also, "Can I get (a pint of lager,,,)?
No, you can't! That's the Servers job!

Well, strictly the correct answer to "Can I have a pint of lager?" is just "Yes" or "No". But funnily enough, all bar staff know that by that request you are intending that they provide one for you in return for payment.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/08/2026 18:04

I don't get people being annoyed by common expressions and patterns of speech. For those of you who don't get out much and meet other people, using similar language and patterns of speech is part of how human beings gel and relate to one another. Glad I don't go round being perpetually irritated by it. I'd love to hear how the language police posting here speak. I bet they use words and phrases which are annoying to others.

I hate it when people say they have ‘done’ locations.

‘I’ve done Disney/done Paris’

Stop it.

Oh I thought I was the only one who hated this phrase. It’s so commonly used now.

hairyweebeastie · 24/08/2026 17:53

Agree with so many of these.

Mostly from social media, but these all infuriate me:

Protecting my peace
Our hearts are so full
Navigating
People “carrying” feelings and situations instead of dealing with them
Likwise feelings and situations being “heavy” instead of being hard or a lot to deal with
Nervous systems and regulation of them
The need to “elevate” outfits, etc
Overuse of “space” for everything

I could go on for days, and haven’t even started on corporate waffle yet.

Takingtigermountainbystrategy · 24/08/2026 17:44

When people make a usually very obvious point and say there, I fixed it for you.also hate Do better. Not keen on hope this helps. All horrible cliches masquerading as wit and wisdom

parkezvous · 24/08/2026 17:40

‘I’m confused’ - no you’re not you just can’t articulate that you don’t understand.

mcmuffin22 · 24/08/2026 17:14

Price point is also awful and unnecessary.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 24/08/2026 03:01

At its finest!

Every second person commenting on social media these days posts "(insert random noun) at its finest!". And 95% of them put an apostrophe in its.

Regurgitation of soundbites without any original thought at its finest.

My mum still uses 'not' eg. Well that sounds sensible - not!

It reminds me of the 80s/90s and not in a good way! Also 'methinks'. 😬

Today I watched a video which described every item as a moment - I really love this little pink moment. I could feel my brain cells diminishing.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/08/2026 00:16

Not a phrase but a word. Grab. People are always grabbing something. I see it a lot on here and it irritates the life out of me.

I hate the name of those packets of crisps - Grab bags. And when I get a text from UberEats saying 'Delivered! Grab your order at the door'. I just think it sounds rude!

Boggyjo · 24/08/2026 07:48

Someone already commented on the incorrect use of the word ‘amazing’, but it is the phrase, ‘you’ve done amazing’ that really annoys me.

You have performed amazingly. I’d even allow ‘you’ve done amazingly well’, but you’ve done amazing’ is a horrendous mis-use of our language and makes one sound a bit dim!

I call that sort of thing football commentator speak e.g. he's done amazing, rather than he's done amazingly well. Or worse, the boy done amazing.

working hard makes you rich

"We worked our arses off for what we have" infuriates me. As does "People who won't get off their arses and work". Why are self made people who hate benefit claimants obsessed with arses?
