Everyday phrases that piss me off

As the title goes , a couple of examples:

It only costs xxx - What an incredibly ignorant thing to say in this day and age of mass inequality. On any given day there's a bullshit thread on here comparing pension plans and the amount of hundreds of thousands people have saved compared to the ones who have nothing saved.

Well I've never seen/heard that before - well Jackie, I've never seen anyone abuse a wheelchair user or a trans person or a Jewish person in my own life, but I believe that it happens, despite my not witnessing it.

Feel free to rant about other stuff that people are willfully oblivious to.

I’ve just watched some advent calendar unboxings and have found more words to hate. Spenny - just say expensive ffs! Boujie or bougie - however you spell it. Is there a committee of idiots somewhere whose life’s work is inventing ridiculous words? 🤬

You’re the idiot for watching the unboxing of advent calendars in September!

HelenaWaiting · 28/08/2026 07:47

People who use "hence" followed immediately by the word "why". You clearly have no idea what "hence' means. Are you using it to sound clever? If so, you might take half a fucking minute to find out how to use it correctly.

God I hated that when my daughter was little. The use of “mum” and “baby” without the definite article. What the hell is that about? As if new mothers didn’t already feel patronised and micromanaged enough.

Can anyone in a healthcare/maternity role explain why they do this?

I was once in the post office and my kids were interrupting me with “Mum, mum, mum”. The guy behind the counter said, “Don’t you wish sometimes your name wasn’t mum?”.
I said “My name ISN’T mum”.
He said, “oh I’m sorry. I thought you were their mother.” I said, “Yes, but my name isn’t actually mum.”

Onefairfish · 28/08/2026 07:08

‘Forever’ as in ‘my forever home’. What happened to the word ‘permanent’ ?

Motuihe · 28/08/2026 00:31

'It is what it is'......ggggggrrrrrrr

hairyweebeastie · 27/08/2026 23:04

“A committee of idiots” is now my favourite collective noun.

I hate the social media ‘way’ of excessively using fragment sentences as paragraphs.

Empress13 · 27/08/2026 21:27

One word “Like” ! Used after every bloody word “It’s like … I’m like “ gggrrrrrrrrr ! 😩

igelkott2026 · 27/08/2026 14:09

Another one from me - everything is "kinda chic" these days.

Maybe I should just come off social media.

People who answer “Good!” When asked how they are.

One of my dearest friends hates it when people say ‘I’m good’.

I agree with you and with her…

maxandru · 26/08/2026 21:28

Also , as a teacher, I’ve found lots of kids recently asking “Can I go toilet?”. I mean, seriously ! Where is the preposition?! Where is the article?!

Stablegirl2012 · 26/08/2026 21:28

”I am wanting to…” rather than “I want to…”. Urgh.

maxandru · 26/08/2026 21:23

“I’m so OCD” : this really gets me. OCD is an awful illness, not some kind of personality quirk and I find trivialising it like this so ignorant.

“Literally” used in a phrase that is completely NOT literal. Eg “Omg, I was LITERALLY dying with laughter”. No, you weren’t, that’s the whole point of hyperbole.

“Can I get…”. I worked in Costa as a student and every time I heard this I wanted to reply “yes, please do step behind the counter and come and GET your coffee yourself”

”Cool beans”.
So painful.

Ilikesundays · 26/08/2026 21:20

“Super” for “very” as in,”I’m super excited by ….”

maxandru · 26/08/2026 21:12

Maomee · 24/08/2026 01:30

Not so much a phrase but improper use of reflexive pronouns (yourself, myself). It's so common and people seem to think tusing them makes them sound formal/intelligent, but misusing them just sounds so bloody dumb. '.e.g. I'm going to the party what about yourself?'
Erm, no, unless you've already used 'you' in the sentence, you do not use 'yourself'.

Totally agree; this makes my skin crawl.

However, they’re not reflexive pronouns in this sense; they’re emphatic pronouns..,

GeishaTrumpet · 26/08/2026 21:11

“You know” as filler in a conversation. It drives me mad!

1stWorldProblems · 26/08/2026 21:11

Medalled - no, you won a medal!

Colab. Hollibobs.

Norwaygirl · 26/08/2026 21:09

Can I get? Nooooooo! It's please can I have....? Please may I have.....

“Of an evening/morning”.

makes me rage. No idea why. Just hate it. Sounds grammatically wrong. Pompous. Twatish.
just hits the ear completely wrong!

Yes!! It’s usually used incorrectly and regardless just makes the person saying it/writing it sound like a pretentious wanker.

Also hate ‘triggering’ (unless used jokingly or to be deliberately dramatic) and anything to do with ‘establishing boundaries’ which is usually just an excuse to be lazy, selfish or self important.

Frieda86 · 26/08/2026 19:48

"my bad"

DeadMemories · 26/08/2026 18:15

A bite to eat.

We went for a lovely walk and stopped at the local pub for a bite to eat.

it makes no bloody sense, how can you eat a bite unless it’s an old English word meaning lunch or something.

Also hate the word hack which is used everywhere .

mamajong · 26/08/2026 17:54

'So, I did a thing' 🤮
