AIBU to question rising private school fees amid declining GCSE results

Private school GCSE decline.

What happened? Is this an example of what’s to come?

Fees are rising well beyond inflation annually yet, results are in decline.

State schools prioritising, ‘reserving seats’ in house for 6th Form. Risky investment?

What does the bot think about the Peckham MP? And their rise to cabinet in just over 2 years?

Stop the boats.

A few … emojis and spelling errors fool nobody!

I mean come on, a cup back emoji - hehe.

MN is a private company and can do what it likes

A tad like those private school (businesses) stealing all the bursary funds 😱

The mums in local circles have used UV permanent markers for items this year. So it’s going to be interesting.

This.

I’m dead.

If this doesn’t deserve its own thread on Mumsnet I don’t know what does.

Wealthy UK private school kids sent to school wearing UV labeled uniform and accessories (sporting black light UV sensitive keyring torches on their school bags) in order to catch those pesky Middle class from stealing their property.

[You just know this will actually be a thing. 💰🔦]

There’s a paradox here let me explain,

Most know academia doesn’t pay,

Those who dedicate their lives to teaching know it’s not well paid whether school or uni. The pursuit of higher education comes, often with great student debt.

Often teachers, professors even can be working whilst still paying off student loans.

It’s the “academics” or those who believe they’re of superior education who will often correct on mumsnet. They can be entitled and obnoxious. The problem is more often than not these “academics” have chosen to teach not do. They often lack the funds or the finance to pay for these institutions.

More often than not a humble business owner perhaps with basic education will be financially superior as they chose to DO, not teach.

Theres a society of old school “academics” holding onto these independent institutions with a vice like grip yet, They cannot afford them.

We’re moving into a technological era where education is open to all for low cost. Education is increasingly not only for high society, it’s accessible, universal.

There is poverty within independent education just as there is wealth within state school.

Your own independent articles and data are testament to that Fact. The world has changed and it is private school being left behind, drowning in debt and financial burden.

Poverty 😄

These threads are hilarious.
There is no way OP is a bot. OP is either

  1. Very wealthy and sick of subsidising “the poor at private schools aka The UK Middle class. Or,
  2. They’re politically motivated to promote equality and state education.

When I read all these posts it looks like an antagonist who has played the thread perfectly.

The outraged Middle class up in arms.
How dare That Bot!

It seems those Pro Inde report user and delete user so they just make new accounts making a mockery of the situation. The OP threads remain for all to join and read. Internet foot print.

Mumsnet cannot remove factual information that would be censorship. Basically, the OP is laughing at you and you’re falling for it 🤖😄 I can’t wait to read the next thread…..

Indeed. It’s really quite ridiculous.

however, they are also around friends who are advantaged and snobby and have what I would call ‘small world’ views and have learned to challenge that too

@Longtimelurker1980 Where do they meet these ‘advantaged and snobby’ people? What are their small world views that your morally superior children challenge?

I think it’s refreshing to just understand that education is fluid. So many different ways to gain the qualifications.

I do agree with this. If it wasn't for the difficulty of finding actual places to take exams as a private candidate, I think a lot more people would take this route.

„Others especially British, based in UK fiercely protect “British standards” British heritage and culture and insist their children are exposed to that as foundation.“

@bedtimeaudible - you are talking out of your hat again and not following any of the nuances in the actual educational press. Telegraph is considered a foreign controlled click bait rag full of cliches.

On the ground there is extensive debate as to what texts and versions of history children should be taught given eg over 40 per cent non white in London with mused heritage, birth etc
one thing is clear- in UK politicians are given far too much control over health and education which they then use to further their own political football games at the expense of our children. In real life I don’t know a single person who works in education who doesn’t think that. Covid was the epitome of the absurdity of the control they exercise and nobody is going to forget that. Add in the absurdity of student loans and things like the private school VAT the one thing that is clear is that most will demand more autonomy not less.

It is a legal requirement in UK to teach British values.

Back in the day private school was synonymous with wealth.

Thats gone.

Education is now very easily accessible and open to all.

Private schools are left with a defunct USP.

They do not have the finance to match cocurricular or enrichment that individual families can provide in house for their own children.

Rich kids are not rubbing shoulders with other rich kids the landscape has changed rich kid families are increasingly having to subsidise ALL those claiming hardship or in general not paying their fair share. Rich kids having their property stolen by others forced into situations where the green eyed monster is fed daily. It’s a very odd situation. Something will have to give.

In UK whether immigration or education families are increasingly demanding British values and a British society where all are welcome but nothing and no one is able to interfere with British heritage and values. British values are taught heavily under said banner to really drive that message home to all choosing to live/study in UK. This movement is rapidly on the increase.

I don’t understand this point. Surely if you can’t pay you can’t pay? Why do you have to be ‘extra’ unable to pay?

Every family who haggle another family subsidises. So the “fee assistance” number increases.

I have a friend who tried to do this for her child. Hard to replace a teacher with an online course. Also finding an exam centre that takes on private candidates to sit exams is hard. And I think private candidates don't have the coursework option (not sure about this).

I think it’s refreshing to just understand that education is fluid. So many different ways to gain the qualifications.

TheCoolTiger · 28/08/2026 10:46

Independent schools (bar those in London who are wealthy) their revenue source comes directly from fee payers.

If their internal benefits bill has already reached its highest ever handout 1/3 of families in hardship how long can this last? Families paying more in annual fee hikes to subsidise 1/3 on benefits. Bursary should be means tested for disadvantaged in society earned under test criteria. This 1/3 is not going to charitable cause. It’s going to middle class friends of the administration who cannot afford the fees.

I don’t understand this point. Surely if you can’t pay you can’t pay? Why do you have to be ‘extra’ unable to pay?

And by the way I am pissed that the State ordains from the top exactly what my kids should be learning and how they should think because they are subjected to a mandatory national curriculum. Like most people with a proper higher education I teach my kids to challenge both the national curriculum and the political dogma/brainwashing behind it. You can do that even if you can’t afford private school. I still fully support m my DC state schools as they don’t get a choice but to rigidly implement whatever nonsense the Patriarchal system of DFE and ofsted overlords them with.

That’s your perspective.

Others especially British, based in UK fiercely protect “British standards” British heritage and culture and insist their children are exposed to that as foundation.
