AIBU to think a 10pm bedtime and 6am start is relatively normal in your 40s?

A recent ex found it a real issue that i would go to bed between 9.30 and 10.30 (this is going upstairs to bed, not going to sleep. That takes a while longer!) and then regularly get up around 6-7am.
Twice a week i had to commute into London, about 90 minutes, so i would have to be up by 6 on that days immaterial. The rest of the week it just suited me to keep to that routine. I like being up early and going to bed a bit earlier stops me late night snacking.

The ex, a man in his mid 40s, without children stated categorically (and dont get me started on his always thinking he was right) that "most people our age wouldn't go to bed that early and get up early".

I believe he is skewed by his own - responsibility-free life and his ex wife who was also nocturnal in tendencies.

Personally everybody else i know my age generally keeps similar hours to me , except on rare occasions when you might stay up late to socialise and then regret it the next day!

So who is being unreasonable? This has been bugging me for weeks, despite the fact he is now an ex!

YABU - you live like a nun, he is right. Lighten up and stay up late.
YANBU - you are right and he is living like a teenager because he can and assuming its normal.

9.30/10pm is fairly early in my opinion, but in fairness 7 - 8 hours per night is recommended so that’s 10pm / 11pm latest if you wake at 6pm which isn’t far off

rathersleepy · 23/08/2026 20:00

Sounds normal to me. I get up just before 7 and aim to be in bed before 11. Doesn’t always happen but 7 hours sleep is ideal

A relationship with someone who doesn’t keep the same times as you will never work so it doesn’t matter, I can’t go to bed that early as I’d have 0 child free time but if it works for you who cares?

DH follows early to bed early to rise, he is your typical early bird.

I on the other hand am your nightowl. Struggle to sleep before midnight.

We work.

OP - you do whatever sleep schedule works for you! Your partner needs to be accepting it even if it doesnt match their own.

Minasama · 23/08/2026 19:56

I can understand the frustration of being with a partner who insists on going to bed early as that could get quite boring, then being woken up early is also a pain. But if your work requires that what are you supposed to do about it?
I personally find getting up
at 6 exhausting. I go to bed around 11 and get up around 7.15.,

1985goingbackagain · 23/08/2026 19:53

Yep, bed by 10 at the latest, up at 5.40 for the gym - maybe a little sleep in on the weekend until 6.15 when I wake up naturally (unfortunately)

exaltedwombat · 23/08/2026 19:53

'Normal'? Why this obsession with conformity? So be unusual, if it suits you! But your hours don't seem ALL that odd.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/08/2026 19:50

YABU to think that your wake/sleep pattern is ‘normal’. I know very few people who get up that early, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t if you want to.

Roughly 25% of the population are ‘larks’, who naturally prefer to get up early and go to bed early.

There is no ‘should’ or ‘normal’. It’s a personal preference.

Personally I wouldn’t like to date someone who needed to be in bed by 10pm on a Saturday night though.

Tuesdayschild50 · 23/08/2026 19:33

Normal ... In Winter id go up get cosy and watch television in bed at 9pm sometimes earlier.summer time i sit outside when its nice until late .

BooBooDoodle · 23/08/2026 19:32

Perimenopause is kicking my arse and has been for the last 5 years. I don’t sleep properly anyway and I have to be up at 6am for work. I’m in bed anywhere between 8:30pm and 9pm. DH starts work at 6 and he’s in bed just gone 9pm. I’m just done and wiped out by 7pm so struggle to get through until bedtime.

Really? Interesting. I remember when I used to wake up at 6am. It was when I was in hospital for 5 weeks, then I kept on doing it for a couple of years. It felt horrible! So yeah, I did wake up early but not on purpose. Thankfully I broke the habit.
I kind of think if it's due to peri or illness etc then it's not really by choice!

Initially it wasnt by choice but now I absolutely love it and 6am is my favourite part of the day- its so peaceful and quiet and I get a work out done. I wont ever go back to lying in - makes me feel groggy and gross now.

I am a night owl but would love to be an early bird ( like everyone else in my family).
People are different.
I'm surprised your ex can't see that.
Don't spend any extra time thinking about this. Go and enjoy your day!

Night owl here too. However I wish I was an early bird as think they are usually more productive!

I do think this is quite a fundamental incompatibility actually.

Lemonyyy · 23/08/2026 19:06

I love a lie in until 10ish on the weekends, but on working days (bog standard 9-5 with a fairly short commute) I keep virtually the same hours as you. I don't get how you would be lying in past 8 most days if you have work!

Timeforachange26 · 23/08/2026 19:05

I'm not sure I could sleep at 10pm tbh. Had an airport run at 4am recently so tried going to bed early as still awake. Usually sleep around midnight/ 12.30 and up by 7.

I'm 55

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 23/08/2026 19:04

Neither of your options are correct.

I certainly don't want to go to bed at 10 and get up again 6 and it wouldn't work for me to be in a relationship with someone who did.

That doesn't make them a nun and it doesn't make me a teenager!

Skates · 23/08/2026 19:04

Perfectly normal. In fact I get up at 4-30 am and I’m on my feet all day. Normally 11 hour work days. I’m sometimes in bed by 8pm. I go to bed when I’m tired never by the time. Some days I need 8 hours sleep sometimes only 6. On the weekends I’m normally up by 7am

Don’t listen to the skimmed milk lecture. It is terrible for you and is what is keeping people overweight.

Sorry can you explain this? Why does skimmed milk keep people overweight?

Comicalblackcat · 23/08/2026 18:51

Ignore your ex, he is gone and you are free to live how YOU want it’s your life.

WhatNextImScared · 23/08/2026 18:37

Totally normal. He’s living the life of a teenager. Unattractive, although if he has no responsibilies it’s up to him I guess. How did he get to work on time if he didn’t get up before 7?

On his office days he would try to go to bed a bit earlier than usual and then have to get up early no matter what.
He also has the happy ability to be able to get back to sleep when he gets woken, which I do not. I also prefer unbroken sleep to stop start sleep.

DraftLovely · 23/08/2026 18:24

10 o'clock is bedtime! A hard line bedtime. I'm often in bed way before that as I'm very tired. 6am is also a normal start time on a weekday.

VeraPetrovnaGorky · 23/08/2026 17:40

to get enough rest thats a good time, for me i usually push it till around 12/1am and up at 8am

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/08/2026 17:04

Neither of you is wrong. Both of you are right for yourselves. I consider 11 am an early night, but I regret that on the days I have 6am gym class.

Oldgalgames · 23/08/2026 16:38

I feel like the odd one out, just turned 40 go to bed between 8.30 and 9pm! I get up around 5am to workout prior to my 9-5 job, im usually shattered by then

whaleby · 23/08/2026 16:17

He’d hate my life. I go to bed at 1-2am and get up at 7 due to caring responsibilities. I look as tired as I feel. I dream of a 9.30-6am stretch.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/08/2026 16:04

I think it depends on what you do when you “go to bed” too actually. We don’t have a TV in our bedroom, so when I go to bed, I want the light out and to sleep - I don’t read in bed, and my phone goes in a docking station. My DP often goes to bed much earlier than me, but will potter around on his phone and still be awake when I come in, often with a cat needing evicted from my side.
