AIBU to ask the local running club to move its Sunday stop?

About the local running club. I live in a smallish village with others close by. Someone who doesn’t live locally has started a running club in the area , due to I would guess demand and you can also do a good circuit on very quiet roads and through flat fields. This as a concept is absolutely great and I have no overall issue. However they have one of their ‘exercises stops’ outside my house at 8am on a Sunday. This includes a a lot of shouting and then loud chatter from 10-15 people for 5 mins. It wakes me up , this is the only day I don’t have work. Now I don’t own the road and I understand that. But I think it’s inconsiderate. There is a large secluded car park area they could use literally 50m down the road or a field 50m the other way. Also for context I have neighbours but I don’t think it would be so loud for them. So I am really considering asking them to move to one of the other areas not near houses. It’s not the crack of dawn but it’s really annoying and seems no reason why it’s right there. I have the organisers fb from her promoting the activity.

I think it’s fine to ask (although definitely wouldn’t include the GDPR nonsense someone has suggested upthread!).

I wouldn’t necessarily expect a positive response, as surely someone with any common sense wouldn’t have started doing their exercise stop there when there were other alternatives that didn’t involve disturbing people, but hopefully they’re just clueless rather than completely self-absorbed.

Sadly, some people DO see it as their place to dictate to other people what/when they 'should' be doing things. They do it on purpose, knowing that they're disturbing you - so that, when you complain, they can self-righteously berate you for 'being lazy and wasting the day'.

I think YANBU to ask the organiser (very politely).

Don’t add a caveat about GDPR you’ll make yourself seem ridiculous.

you could ask nicely for your name/house to be kept quiet.

Kimmers4334 · 23/08/2026 10:20

Yes I think this is fair. Lots of people sleep in on a Sunday and I think it’s considerate to not make unnecessary noise until preferably 10am. I was in the garden at 7 this morning and it was very quiet, I didn’t start quietly pottering until at least 9:30 because it’s really annoying to be woken up, especially in the summer when it’s very calm or windows are open so sound travels

MyDeftDuck · 23/08/2026 10:19

Approach the organiser and explain your personal circumstances re working hours etc and politely ask them to congregate elsewhere. If you don’t ask, they won’t know will they?

Do you have an upstairs window and a long hosepipe? All of those noisy mating wild animals right outside your house, eh - well, what else could it be?! Grin

yes defo ask. nicely. at the end of your email adding along the lines of: “I would be obliged if you would keep the fact that it was me that made this request and my reasoning (noise) confidential as it’s a small town and i dont want any backchat and expect my privacy to be respected under GDPR. The pavement inside the car park is presumably a good suitable stopping place so i assume this reasoning should suffice in your explanation to the group, and i wish you all well in this venture”

Please don't do this!

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 23/08/2026 10:15

8am is pretty early on a Sunday. Sundays are often very polarised, with many people up at the crack of dawn for exercising, sports, car boot sales etc.; and many people enjoying a lie-in, a bit of peace and catching up after a hectic week. Neither group is wrong or entitled to impose their own choices on the other group.

To be honest, I'm not sure the time is even the most relevant thing here, though. It's quite an antisocial and selfish thing to plan on having noisy gatherings outside people's houses rather than in parks or other more communal/non-residential places.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/08/2026 10:13

Definitely worth asking and pointing out the alternative places which sounds just as suitable.

keep us posted @Welshmum2010

Magicpaintbrush · 23/08/2026 10:12

I'm baffled that it hasn't already occurred to them that they might be disturbing residents - you shouldn't even have to point it out, it's common sense.

WimpoleHat · 23/08/2026 10:10

I would ask - hopefully they’ll be mortified at how inconsiderate they’ve been and apologise.

performative early Sunday rising … that’s a new one!

Enfrancais · 23/08/2026 10:09

Definitely ask!

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 23/08/2026 10:06

It's totally reasonable to ask, given that there are 2 suitable alternatives nearby.

I agree its antisocial for fitness groups to not consider people's sleep, especially on a Sunday. I have a friend who lives by our local park and gets woken at 6am by drill sergeant style fitness instructors running "boot camp" sessions in the park.

I think it's pretty well-established that it's too early for noise in the UK. Things like building works are restricted on Sundays. I'm up every Sunday before 8am but doesn't mean I don't recognise that it is generally considered early. I wouldn't let my children out in the garden at that time for example.

EmilyStar · 23/08/2026 10:01

It’s worth asking, especially as there’s alternative places for them to stop at close by.

Elieza · 23/08/2026 09:59

runner here
if they are anything like my running group they will be totally nice about it and be accommodating

Thecomedyclub · 23/08/2026 09:55

Agree with (most!) PPs that you should ask and suggest carpark.
Annoyingly we will now need to wait until next Sunday to see how it goes!

roseymoira · 23/08/2026 09:53

Thats ridiculous, how are people so inconsiderate to think that’s ok outside someone’s house at any time of the day
