AIBU to ask the local running club to move its Sunday stop?

About the local running club. I live in a smallish village with others close by. Someone who doesn’t live locally has started a running club in the area , due to I would guess demand and you can also do a good circuit on very quiet roads and through flat fields. This as a concept is absolutely great and I have no overall issue. However they have one of their ‘exercises stops’ outside my house at 8am on a Sunday. This includes a a lot of shouting and then loud chatter from 10-15 people for 5 mins. It wakes me up , this is the only day I don’t have work. Now I don’t own the road and I understand that. But I think it’s inconsiderate. There is a large secluded car park area they could use literally 50m down the road or a field 50m the other way. Also for context I have neighbours but I don’t think it would be so loud for them. So I am really considering asking them to move to one of the other areas not near houses. It’s not the crack of dawn but it’s really annoying and seems no reason why it’s right there. I have the organisers fb from her promoting the activity.

I have an email address that’s not my name so I can send and email easily

Yes I'd use this then. Ask nicely and there's nothing to lose.

MrDobbs · 23/08/2026 11:52

I would start with the assumption that they are nice enough people and will respond positively to a request to just move a bit further down their route as most people don't actually enjoy being a nuisance to others if they can avoid it.

If the person you email happens to be an awkward one personally and refuses, then maybe next step is to actually come out if your house and make your point in person. There are probably enough normal people in the group who would be more understanding or embarrassed face to face when they see you are not a nutter to get them to change.

If that doesn't work, then declare war.

BringBackCatsEyes · 23/08/2026 11:50

I am in a running club and this is an absolute NO!
We are reminded to respect others at all times.
YANBU. They are probably giddy with endorphins which has turned them into thoughtless beings.

Are they official running club? If so and they don't respect your request then you'll be able to email the chair.

Also suggest they mix up the routes a bit - must be a bit dull doing the same route week after week (not the point I know).

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 23/08/2026 11:45

It sounds like a lack of awareness on their part that could easily be addressed.
I'd definitely send an email and let them know the impact it has on you and ask them to consider having this rest stop in the car park/spare ground or field. It is an easy solution and I'm sure they'll agree.

Edited for typo

mulberrymilk · 23/08/2026 11:44

Send the email. It's a perfectly reasonable request. They must be dim and self-involved and spatially unaware to not realise they are gathering in front of someone's house and yabbering on, and 8 is early for a weekend. I would want to get out the hose and hose them if they persisted! Well, in fantasy, anyway. I would probably barge out in my pjs and bedhair and remonstrate though.

When it’s your only day to catch up on sleep, yeah 8 is early. You are being unreasonable

first post doesn’t nail it

Edited

How does that make any sense? How is she being unreasonable when you've just stated that 8am is early when it's her only day to catch up on sleep.

shuggles · 23/08/2026 11:41

I would feel intimidated by a large crowd of people outside of my home, regardless of time of day and noise.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/08/2026 11:13

You can ask but I’m not sure it’s that early. I live near a shop and get loads of people having early chats outside my window and even a couple having a huge row at 3.30 sat morning. If it’s always at that time every week u are ok to ask I think

quite a few of the shops and small car parks in residential areas round me have signs up saying something like "please respect our neighbours and be mindful of noise between xxx and yyy hours"

Wadsworthy · 23/08/2026 11:36

There is a large secluded car park area they could use literally 50m down the road or a field 50m the other way.

Ask them, with this suggestion. Tell them the noise wakes you on the one day you have to catch up on sleep. Suggest the alternative stopping spots. Ask nicely and they’d be unreasonable to resist.

My former flat in London was on a path of two primary schools and one private nursery. We would have parents after drop off who would congregate outside my flat and chat for such a long time. A lot of them used to even let their younger kids (who were with them) run around my private front garden to let off steam so they could chat in peace!…The annoying thing is the place was full of parks and coffee shops yet so many chose my house to gather around for some reason. And the talking.. It was so LOUD. Just, yapping for an hour or so.

Are you sure they weren’t filming scenes for ‘Motherland’? 😀

so what did you do?

Isn't there a law prohibiting organised crowds over a certain number from gathering in a public place, if they're deemed to represent a breach of the peace?

Obviously it's chiefly intended for rioters and troublemakers, rather than just selfishly unaware shouting running groups; but if need be, maybe it could be pointed out to them?!

I cannot see how it would come to that. I am sure if the OP approached them in a reasonable manner, they would be agreeable.

It’s relative really if prefer to not get up until 10 on a Sunday so it’s early to me

Agreed, 8am on a Sunday is early

That sounds awful, and is very selfish of them... but was the shop already there when you moved in? If so, surely you would expect something of a hubbub as people gather outside a communal facility - albeit nothing as bad as you are describing?

When it's just a regular home, in a row of others, with no communal facilities nearby, you expect people to walk and drive past - but not to assemble en masse.

Stopping in a place that is not someone's house, when it is a simple option and not out of their way, perfectly reasonable to ask. You I hope would be supportive of the run club in general.

Even if you are up and about at that time.

Cla7 · 23/08/2026 11:13

Perfectly reasonable to ask and suggest the alternatives, I can’t see why they’d be difficult about that (I’m saying this as a toddler mum who is involuntarily up at 5.30am on Sundays, although 8am feels like the middle of the day for me now, I realise that this is not for others and I always try to be considerate about noise).

8am isnt early

Yes it is.
If its the only day you get to rest and recharge then 8 am is early.
It just is and you are incorrect.
I would most definately say it to the running club. They should at least rotate their stops so no one is being consistently annoyed.
Its very inconsiderate.

Tetchypants · 23/08/2026 11:10

Elieza · 23/08/2026 09:59

yes defo ask. nicely. at the end of your email adding along the lines of: “I would be obliged if you would keep the fact that it was me that made this request and my reasoning (noise) confidential as it’s a small town and i dont want any backchat and expect my privacy to be respected under GDPR. The pavement inside the car park is presumably a good suitable stopping place so i assume this reasoning should suffice in your explanation to the group, and i wish you all well in this venture”

Have you come from the Victorian era? Do people actually communicate like this? It’s a casual and reasonable request, not a formal legal procedure.

And why would she need to hide the fact it was her who asked? Baffling.

Yourinmyspot · 23/08/2026 11:07

Ask them, they probably just haven’t realised. I’m a member of a running club and I know we wouldn’t mind someone asking a reasonable request like yours.

Don’t be so ridiculous!

OP I would have emailed them as soon as I realised my house was the regular stop. It’s so inconsiderate and I’d be really annoyed.

Hollycoco · 23/08/2026 11:05

godmum56 · 23/08/2026 10:53

yeah, tempting as it may be, not sure the neighbours will like that.

They might not like it on the one occasion you need to do it, but if it works then it means peace and quiet for all the neighbours every Sunday forevermore.

Hanksness · 23/08/2026 11:00

Of course you are not being unreasonable.
Bloody rude and dense of them.
8am is an ungodly hour on a Sunday.
I live in a city and there isn't a peek at 8am.

It is for a lot of people. Not everyone wants to be up with the lark
