AIBU to ask the local running club to move its Sunday stop?

About the local running club. I live in a smallish village with others close by. Someone who doesn’t live locally has started a running club in the area , due to I would guess demand and you can also do a good circuit on very quiet roads and through flat fields. This as a concept is absolutely great and I have no overall issue. However they have one of their ‘exercises stops’ outside my house at 8am on a Sunday. This includes a a lot of shouting and then loud chatter from 10-15 people for 5 mins. It wakes me up , this is the only day I don’t have work. Now I don’t own the road and I understand that. But I think it’s inconsiderate. There is a large secluded car park area they could use literally 50m down the road or a field 50m the other way. Also for context I have neighbours but I don’t think it would be so loud for them. So I am really considering asking them to move to one of the other areas not near houses. It’s not the crack of dawn but it’s really annoying and seems no reason why it’s right there. I have the organisers fb from her promoting the activity.

8am isnt early

Come on. I’m sure you can understand that 8am is within the bounds of when people would still be sleeping on a Sunday morning?

sobermum23 · 30/08/2026 10:07

Did they come!? The big question for this Sunday morning

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/08/2026 18:37

Yes def ask them

i would not be impressed being woken up at 8am every Sunday by noisy people outside my house

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2026 17:27

I agree with PP who reckon they are oblivious to the fact they may be disturbing people in nearby houses. Do just let them know and suggest the alternatives. And apart from the nuisance they are (probably unintentionally) being, it seems remarkably daft to do their exercises in a road when there are off-road options so near.

godmum56 · 23/08/2026 17:27

Actually while I think that 8am on a sunday is early, I think that's kind of a side issue. I think regularly gathering outside someone's house and making noise at any time of any day is unreasonable tout court.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 23/08/2026 17:18

shuggles · 23/08/2026 16:35

Bus stops have small crowds, generally don't make a lot of noise, and people gather there for a specific reason rather than intentionally gathering outside someone's house. Weird comment.

Yeah it's not the same at all.

idril · 23/08/2026 17:06

If they keep doing it, I would question their credentials. If they have any kind of run leader qualification and are an England Athletics registered club, there are guidelines on things like this and it would be very frowned upon. If they don't have a qualification and people are paying for the club, I would question whether they are insured (which they should be!).

shuggles · 23/08/2026 16:35

MasterBeth · 23/08/2026 16:14

Well, you're being unreasonable.

What if you live next to a bus stop?

Your road is a publicly owned. The car park might not be and thete are obvious safety concerns (snd hence iliability /nsurance issues) around a group of pedestrians congregating there. The large field is slso presumably owned by a farmer and thesebplaces might not be on their route.
I tbink its a you problem. Earplugs?

You sound unbearable.

What on earth is problematic about asking people to be considerate about their behaviour?

I would feel intimidated by a large crowd of people outside of my home, regardless of time of day and noise.

Well, you're being unreasonable.

What if you live next to a bus stop?

yes defo ask. nicely. at the end of your email adding along the lines of: “I would be obliged if you would keep the fact that it was me that made this request and my reasoning (noise) confidential as it’s a small town and i dont want any backchat and expect my privacy to be respected under GDPR. The pavement inside the car park is presumably a good suitable stopping place so i assume this reasoning should suffice in your explanation to the group, and i wish you all well in this venture”

Jeez, what's with all the archaic quasi-legal bullshit that people love to suggest on Mumsnet?

"I would be obliged if you would herewith desist from this venture close to me, and I trust this missive should suffice vis-a-vis GDPR*"

*GDPR is completely irrelevant here, btw.

cordeliavorkosigan · 23/08/2026 16:11

So inconsiderate!! Just ask them. Seems likely they'll move along. If not, pop outside and ask every time, and the awkwardness will have most members not wanting to stop there even if the organisers don't care.

Some of us like to lie in after a long week.

Spooll · 23/08/2026 15:19

They're probably completely oblivious and haven't realised how much noise they make or that it would be a nuisance.

I am losely involved in three running clubs, and all the organisers are community minded people who would make alternative arrangements like a shot, if they were made aware.

Definitely don’t do this 🤣

I’m another one that doesn’t think 8am is that early but you could ask them and see what they say.

I wouldn't ask them, rather say "your regular 8am meeting outside my home on a Sunday is waking me up, please stop somewhere where you won't disturb others".
I wouldn't want to be engaging in any sort of debate with them.

tomatoplants · 23/08/2026 14:47

8 is definitely early on a Sunday for shouting and chatting outside your house. 15 people will make a lot of noise. That’s very inconsiderate and I wonder why they haven’t thought about it.

so yes definitely ask.

I doubt they think they are the centre of the universe, seems a bit of leap. If it’s a group that’s grown rapidly it’s very possible they just haven’t realised how loud they are being, people in groups often don’t - be that in a restaurant, on a train or doing sports etc. I know I’ve both been annoyed at loud groups in various situations and have also probably been guilty of annoying other people as part of one.

They're not teenagers or children who don't know any better. They are a group of adults, at least one of them must have enough nous to grasp that it's best to gather away from other people who may be sleeping or resting inside or just preferring to not be the rallying spot for a large crowd. It's not as if a park or a carpark etc is non-existant as opposed to gathering on a residential street.

What's "nice enough" about behaving as if they are the centre of the universe outside someone's house?

Oh god no. Don’t do this. I cringed inside out reading that! So officious.

You might also want to have a read up on gdpr.

OP do you have the organisers phone number. I’d be tempted to ring him and have A chat. It’s a perfectly reasonable request.

even if it was just a 'you' (as in OP) problem, so what? If someone ran you over that would presumably be a 'you' problem but you'd be entitled to be unhappy about it!

They have the option to make it a nobody's problem, so they should.

Also if you had read the OP properly, they literally run through the fields after their exercise stop. If it's safe enough to run in, it's safe enough to stretch in!
