Stopping the boats is easy...

All we have to do is abandon the ECHR, the Refugee Convention, the UN, the G7, NATO and the WTO. Then we can break maritime law and start sinking the boats. Obviously we'd have to proscribe the RNLI and change the job description of the coast guard to encourage people who want to sink boats to sign up. The fishermen will be fine.
Once we start with this deterrent we can start kicking out other undesirables. I'd start with the students. Coming over here using our universities as a gateway to benefits street. So we ban them, no more student visas. We might see a few universities close but no great loss, you learn more in the school of life.
After that take away access to ALL benefits for anyone not born here. Don't care if you've always worked and paid your taxes you're not ENGERLISH so less Dr Khalid more Dr Callum.
Obviously once we start making Britain Great again there may be a couple of teensy issues. Food might cost a lot more because the lefty EU might not want to trade with a nation that wants to isolate itself and kill innocent people. It'll be fine because there will be 100% employment because instead of benefits you'll have to do your 60 hours on the food farm to earn your pound credits.
Family will be legally obliged to look after any living relative as there won't be anyone left to do it because we deported them all. And obviously the NHS was full of loony lefties who went round caring for people instead of focusing on what really mattered, which is profit.
They're just a couple of the benefits of stopping the boats, because who cares about the bigger picture or unintended consequences eh?
Giving up our place on the world stage is a small price to pay for stopping a handful of people coming from countries we benefited from or bombed isn't it?

Just talking about hotel numbers on sky news but did anyone realise since 2018 only 4% of illegal migrants have been returned! I’m absolutely gobsmacked!

I am not sure how anyone could open the boarders? Do you mean that people who live in boarding houses should open their eyes or mouths very wide?

Please at least spell it properly: we are discussing national borders.

Sorry for autocorrect

Barracks are more expensive so the by far part isn’t correct. Plus Labour’s GE pledge wasn’t to just replace types of accommodation.

Would you be happy with barracks near to you?

Barracks are only more expensive because of the costs of converting them and of securing them to a higher standard than the asylum hotels is factored in. The running costs are known to be lower on average.

That means you are comparing apples and oranges.

BoldBee · 27/08/2026 23:21

I think the discussion should be more widely talked around, rather than blaming immigrants.

  • We know birth rates in this country are falling off a cliff.
  • We have an aging population, the average British age is 41.
  • We have threats of war and resources being targeted and a massively underfunded military.
  • We have mounting national debt, which is only managed by people contributing through paying tax, the debts are never paid, that's a given, but interest has to be.

I feel there is more to this than political ping pong, but it doesn't help us gain clarity as to the true rationale, it's the massive elephant in the room and our communities need answer, a plan and immediate security.

Are you only ok with it if it’s far away or has restrictions?

If there’s neither, and the men have access to near where you live are you ok with it?

I defo need to know the full story.

BasildonBonds · 27/08/2026 16:28

Don't try that one with me.

I am talking about the people who spread false information and hate and blame asylum seekers for everything that is wrong in the UK.

The people who have suffered harm at the hands of criminal asylum seekers have all my sympathy. But it doesn't mean I have to mention them every time I post something relating to asylum seekers. Using such awful crimes to try to shut discussion down is quite grotesque.

They aren't everything that's wrong with the UK obviously. But do they cause some issues and the male ones disproportionately attack women

Under 1000 people were housed on military and other government sites as of March 2026, the latest readily accessible figure. Oxford Migration Observatory

The point is that people are indeed dispersed to HMOs and similar sites. Asylum hotels are by far the most expensive housing option, even though they are far from luxurious. The hotels and large government sites attract the majority of comment, because of the critical mass of young men. There is no getting around the fact that this particular problem is being improved greatly under Labour.

The boats are also down 23% in the year to June.

Higher than when they came into office though:

33,000 to YE June 2026
31,000 to YE June 2024

Your question is far too generic.

How close are the closest barracks to civilian housing? Where is this? And what are the restrictions on the movements of the asylum seekers housed therein?

Under 1000 asylum (986 IIRC) are so housed. Have any of them been accused of a serious crime?

Host nations can’t pick and choose, though.

An example can be seen in the UK HE sector. A couple of years ago stricter regulations came in. They had virtually no impact on the very large majority or undergraduates or Masters students. Yet enrolments plummeted, because of the perception that we had become hostile to Overseas students.

Ir is estimated that in less than 2 years we have list £2.9B from the British economy from the loss of these students, and the tuition loss of roughly £500M is a major reason that roughly half of British universities are in deficit.

The immigrants we want, who meet very high standards, are welcome in many places. Why would they choose a country perceived as hostile or cruel? Particularly the many very successful, law abiding ones with brown skin?

🙄

Ok we are up to page 24 and hundreds of replies. So far no one has answered the basic question: why would anyone be prepared to pay thousands of pounds and risk their lives to come to the UK when they are already in a stable, safe, affluent country?

The two explanations so far are:
They might have family here.

And
They might speak English....so we should open the boarders to the 1.5 billion people who speak English as a first or second language.

Well fuck me I'm sold on it... open the boarders

😆 🤣

Legal immigration contributes to the economy, what does illegal immigration contribute once asylum has been granted? Many go into the black economy. Many go on benefits. Many bring their family over, adding to the burden, and strain on housing, health care, education etc.

It was just announced on the BBC Evening News that the number of people in asylum hotels has approximately halved from June 2025 to June 2026.. There were approximately 32,000 asylum seekers in the hotels in June 2025 and now there are approximately 16,000.

@poetryandwine The Manchester Arena bomber was an Islamic extremist.

So was the guy who attacked Heaton Park Synogogue in Manchester on 2nd October 2025

How many people killed and maimed by Islamists and how many by those nasty right wingers?

@NotAnotherScarf you and this poster were asking similar things and I intended to quote the post above rather than yours.

We agree Islamic terrorists are clearly the biggest direct source of terrorist violence in the UK. I thought we had moved beyond that, but the two of you were a bit behind.

poetryandwine · 27/08/2026 17:10

NotAnotherScarf · 27/08/2026 17:02

Well I have to say that I am embarrassed for you.

I think you've forgotten the 22 murdered and 1,017 injured at the Manchester Arena in 2017. An event that was always going to be attended mainly by children and their parents. 10.31 pm just as they were leaving... just one event, less than 10 years ago.

I think you need to hang your head in shame for going down this road

The other PP asked about right wing terrorism. I will quote their post for you below. The first sentence of my answer said that I was answering this question. Don’t be so quick off the mark.

Poor form.

It has been driving me bonkers for many pages now. And this PP has badly and, I would bet, deliberately, misrepresented the case concerning the pull of history, education, acculturation, language and above all, family.

Officially 2 have been killed and 13 injured by right wing terrorists in the UK this century.

I discussed the indirect connections of the Russians and Chinese to Islamic terrorism on British soil, as well as the direct risks they pose, above. Why not watch the Dan Jarvis video?
