Stopping the boats is easy...

All we have to do is abandon the ECHR, the Refugee Convention, the UN, the G7, NATO and the WTO. Then we can break maritime law and start sinking the boats. Obviously we'd have to proscribe the RNLI and change the job description of the coast guard to encourage people who want to sink boats to sign up. The fishermen will be fine.
Once we start with this deterrent we can start kicking out other undesirables. I'd start with the students. Coming over here using our universities as a gateway to benefits street. So we ban them, no more student visas. We might see a few universities close but no great loss, you learn more in the school of life.
After that take away access to ALL benefits for anyone not born here. Don't care if you've always worked and paid your taxes you're not ENGERLISH so less Dr Khalid more Dr Callum.
Obviously once we start making Britain Great again there may be a couple of teensy issues. Food might cost a lot more because the lefty EU might not want to trade with a nation that wants to isolate itself and kill innocent people. It'll be fine because there will be 100% employment because instead of benefits you'll have to do your 60 hours on the food farm to earn your pound credits.
Family will be legally obliged to look after any living relative as there won't be anyone left to do it because we deported them all. And obviously the NHS was full of loony lefties who went round caring for people instead of focusing on what really mattered, which is profit.
They're just a couple of the benefits of stopping the boats, because who cares about the bigger picture or unintended consequences eh?
Giving up our place on the world stage is a small price to pay for stopping a handful of people coming from countries we benefited from or bombed isn't it?

Locked up?!!!!
You have absolutely no f*ing idea what some of these people have been through to get here.
Read ‘Sea Prayer’ by Khaled Hosseini, it’s a 48 page picture book, and try not to cry.

Yes of course locked up! France may not be their preferred country but they're quite safe there, so to then put a small child on a dinghy is reckless endangerment.
Not expecting that basic standard of care towards children is total racism of low expectations stuff.

To be fair, there have been quite a few dead kids washed up on beaches, so it’s not just the fit and able trying to make the crossing.
Does that make it better?

Anyone endangering their child to get from France to Britain needs to be locked up.

Tbf it makes it worse. Why support a system that does this?

I was being ironic.

LuckyHazelFox · 23/08/2026 20:52

We really shouldn't be surprised at children being disposable. The last 3 years has shown this, as awful as it is. People can try to claim racism all they want, when the truth of the matter is some extreme cultures don't place value on life outside that of a man.

No it doesn't, but review all the pictures of people leaving the boats and the majority are males under 40. The kids are sadly the ones most likely to die should there be an accident, or a need to lighten the load.

Both statements could be true.

I don’t so much object to the fact that the very rich exploit legal loopholes as to the existence of those loopholes. The underlying principle that the very rich can pay lower rates than a nurse, which is true, is not right.

It's on investment income.... We need people investing to have economic growth

Sunak pays plenty of tax. He pays more in a year than a nurse in her whole lifetime.

I seem to remember that Sunak pays a lower rate of tax than a typical nurse.
You can spin that how you like, but rich people are typically asset rich, and don’t pay anything like the tax that would be fair.

The Australians manage it???!! Why can’t we??!!

A draconian immigration policy enabled by the proximity of poor island nations where would-be immigrants can be dumped.
Australia is currently having lots of ‘deport all Indians’ demonstrations. You wouldn’t want to be near those - puts our former NF in the shade.

But billionnaires do pay vast amounts of tax, I don't know why people think they don't.

They also don't tend to hang around in groups harrassing schoolgirls, or gang rape women on Brighton beach.

Fully agree...then why if it's so dangerous are the majority arriving here young men? Remember the Kinder Transport... people doing everything to send their children to safety. If these countries are dangerous why aren't they bringing their wives, mother's, sisters, the old and infirm...you know the weak who are easiest to abuse, rape and torture.

Why are the boats filled with men who have paid thousands to leave a perfectly safe country?

To be fair, there have been quite a few dead kids washed up on beaches, so it’s not just the fit and able trying to make the crossing.

Mandate would be needed first via votes, and as seen on here not everyone agrees.

The parties on the left won’t run on leaving the ECHR for example.

Thank you this is the most sensible answer I have been given. So its not possible due to the ehcr? I can indeed see many people nervous about losing the ehcr especially with its links to Churchill.

But are there not other international treaties some of the solutions suggested would breach or other diplomatic problems it would cause thst are also very challenging. I dont personally want to be at loggerheads with France gor instance.

Reform ran on leaving the ECHR in 2024. It wasn't a big vote winner for them. I am not sure it is on many voters' radar.

The pp wondered why it couldn’t be resolved easily, it’s pretty much this. 2024 isn’t really an indication of the next GE outcome though.

What 2029 looks like I guess we’ll see, it’s a fair way off. Hard to predict.

They were hypothetical reasons someone might have for believing political parties are chosing not to solve the problem.

Noone has answered why, other than its not actually that easy, noone has done it when its clearly a vote winner, even with fairly liberal people who prefer safer firms if asylum seeking.

I was genuinely trying to find out why people think this and the previous government's dont do this very easy thing at the risk of losing power over not doing it.

My personal opion was because its not actually easy.

Mandate would be needed first via votes, and as seen on here not everyone agrees.

EasternStandard · 23/08/2026 15:37

It’s not required, Australia hasn’t done all this but not even those on the left want to go back to deaths at sea.

Thank you I regularly get those mixed up. You are correct, I think in West Country you see and your lucky that most things don't start with yer, that I leave out all the to's, and innits and that every word that ends in a vowel don't have an L added.

Mind you, your user name sounds lush in my accent. My cat is reel

millymollymoomoo · 23/08/2026 15:23

Actually if they were picked up at Dover, driven straight to a detention centre for permanent holding until deportation, no phones given, no day trips out, no tvs or PlayStations provided, basic meals and board, no access to legal aid, no dumping in HMOs, hotels or others, no being allowed to roam free and all applications rejected I reckon most would not come ….
