AIBU - to ask you for your worst girl and boy names

Asking on behalf of DD who is expecting. What are in your view the worst girl and boy names. for me they are the made up ones like Nevaeh and Jayden

I know twins named “Reggie & Ronnie” - really don’t like this because of the nod to the Krays.

Also know sisters called Blossom and Bloom - I just think that’s a bit naff 🤣

There are still people (not me) who believe the Krays represented a golden era of criminality - I think because they left 'ordinary people' alone and had lines they wouldn't cross - they wouldn't condone mugging old ladies, that kind of thing.

Their type of fraud was on a corporate scale, not scamming the man on the street. That contrasts favourably to some compared with modern life, which is like trying to cross a minefield as you dodge scams left, right and centre.

Of course, the Krays type of crime did affect the person on the street if you dig deeper - protection rackets sending people out of business, collusion with corrupt police etc.

But to some people, the Krays were 'gentlemen thieves'.

We used to hear neighbours talking and singing to their daughter- 'Ellie fenelly with the big fat belly', and 'My brown eyed girl', She had a nickname 'Phanta' as in Ele-phant', it was sung out with such tender love.... but felt sorry for the 'Ellie fenelly with the big fat belly' thinking it would impact on the child's self esteem, then we found out the child they sung so lovingly to was a little mixed breed dog. Bless. But I could never call a child Ellie after that.

Awful lot of hate for Jayden but DS has a friend called this and he’s a lovely lad.

DD had a girl in her class at primary school called Bootsie . She moved schools after a couple of years but recently I bumped into her mother for the first time in nearly 15 years and when relaying the story, the general consensus was “how can you forget a child with a name like that?”

I had a phase of reading the birth announcements in the Telegraph for sport and most memorable was the baby girl named Hermione Popocatépetl, which raises some interesting questions

My personal dislike are when people deliberately misspell names to be unique like Abbeygale, Reeess, Phlorens etc

I think arsehole is more common in Scotland whereas asshole tends to be said in England?

I dunno, because times change. I have a friend who thinks this, and her kids (ranging in age from 5-11, are called things like Stephen and Paul. But poor Stephen and Paul now stand out, and surely are going to stand out even more among Alfie and Eddie when all grown adult men are called names like that, aren’t they?!

But Alfie and Eddie are shortened version of a full name! We’re as some of these cute names aren’t. So my son is Theodore, he was Teddy but as he’s gotten older he goes by Theo cos Teddy to him was babyish: so I am glad we gave him the full name and he had the option of what to go by.

Worst is Jessica. A perfectly reasonable name - I just dislike it.

Anything hyphenated

for boys - anything that’s half a name like Alfie, Freddie, Reggie, Max, Archie etc.

also Jaiden, Kayden, Braiden etc.

A 40 plus man called Barry is not odd. A 20 year old would be odd, and a young man in 25 years called Barry will be odder still.

I’m in my 50s. No one my age is called Barry! It’s for someone much older. Saying that a family friend called their son Barry (probably around 40 now) after Barry Sheene the racing driver and as a kid I wondered why they were giving him an old man name.

I know that makes a British person think of Putin right now, but it's a very common name in Eastern Europe. Even Zelensky has a variant of the name.

There was even a play by George Bernard Shaw called 'Candida'. And there were a few Saint Candida's. I knew a Candida born in the 60s, and usually called Candy. So far as I know, she wasn't teased about her name. I think the unfortunate associations are fairly recent.
