my DS is 6 on Monday and I have just had to fix my car which cost me a fortune. I feel like I haven’t bought him enough. I have bought him a full sized football net, football boots, trainers a new football and an iPad. I just think he won’t be happy as it isn’t much to open.

Ditch the ipad for many many reasons

SeraphinaRainbird · 22/08/2026 13:57

When did this happen, that children had a pile of presents on their birthday? Ours, born in the 70s , had one present, and I think that was pretty normal, They had a pile at Christmas though.

Needmorelego · 22/08/2026 12:25

@hourspassed no I am not the OP in disguise 😂
What I was meaning was if someone is going to buy their child a lot of presents (because they want them to have 'lots to open") it's better to have connected gifts they can use together like 3 football related things.
I see the 3 football things as one gift really.
I would call that the "main" birthday present. That's hardly "loads of stuff ".
If the OP still wanted to give him the iPad then I would have classed that as the main present.
He doesn't need the football stuff AND the iPad.
(I admit I missed there was separate trainers too but surely he'd need those anyway)
The extras I meant was a few novelty things like stickers or bubble bath 😂
The type of novelty stuff six year olds adore.

Wishimaywishimight · 22/08/2026 11:29

Football boots AND trainers? Getting too much of the same sort of thing just dilutes the pleasure.

If you keep this up your kids will be expecting more and more and will become less and less satisfied each year. Your daughter counting her gifts shows this has already happened.

Are you trying to compensate for some other lack of something in their lives?

BringBackTheLight · 22/08/2026 11:27

I pressed yanbu by mistake!

You are definitely being unreasonable and spoiling your children. Return the iPad, buy a few books from WOB and do a cake and tea party at home if his friends are away.

I would have loved to have done a party but all his favourite friends are on holiday so I also feel guilty about that now too. I did take my eldest with her friend and my son and his friend to the play centre a few days ago which cost quite a bit with food etc but it’s like they don’t realise, I think they are becoming spoiled to be honest. My daughter last year counted the presents she had and said she got more the year before! I was livid!

Livid? You have clearly caused them to think and behave this way . Reign it all in massively

I would have been more than happy with that but I feel so much pressure!

From who?

scoobysnaxx · 22/08/2026 11:21

Is this a joke? Not enough? An iPad???

hourspassed · 22/08/2026 11:21

Are you the OP in disguise? @Needmorelego

You're certainly doing your best to fight their corner.

I also did not say that boots, ball and a goal is lots of stuff. You said 'better to have connected presents than lots of different random stuff' so you're calling yourself out here. And then you said 'what's wrong with a few extras' so would these be connected or not?

Anyway, there's some paint that I desperately need to go and watch dry ...

Parcelpass · 22/08/2026 11:19

Did he ask for an Ipad OP? If you do keep it make sure you have a screen protector and a heavy duty case. Its enough..as others have said.

Its not all about presents you could of done a nice weekend at the beach or a trip to do the zoo. Don't put yourself under pressure. If you can afford the Ipad just keep it.

iPads are expensive. And I said £1000.

You can get iPads for much less than £1000 though.
I also said I didn't think the iPad was a good idea for a 6 year old.

Where did the OP say she spent £1000s ?

He’s 6! He’s just happy to have a day about him and get a few new toys. You’ve bought him plenty and just make a fuss of him.

Ive just noticed you also got an IPAD. Are you actually serious that you don’t think £1000 of presents is enough? Grow up.

My favourite toy when I was six was a peddle tractor that my dad found in a skip.

He may well be into lots of stuff but that doesn't mean you should feel pressured to buy your DC lots of presents for their birthday even if they are all 'connected'. It doesn't really matter if the trainers were from Primark - even they'd be £10 ish? which if you haven't got spare it may as well be £100.

It's crazy.

But I personally don't think a ball + boots + goal is a "lot of stuff".
That sounds like a fairly ordinary birthday gift to me.
I assume he would be getting trainers anyway as children need shoes.
But birthdays are meant to be fun. Having a goodie bag of a few cheap novelties as "extra" to unwrap....what exactly is wrong with that?

Should have taken some away and said ‘well you’ve got even less now for that comment.’

FillTheGoldenCupWithRoses · 22/08/2026 10:51

Oh and my children will not be seeing a personal IPad until they’re in double digits.

My daughter just turned 6 and got a climbing frame for the garden, but we’d given it to her a while before as the weather was good and she might as well have been getting the use of it.

We were also away for her birthday so there was the issue of space/ transporting stuff. She got some books, Uno, a mermaid barbie, and some sparkly hair scrunchies. Honestly as someone who usually goes overboard it was plenty, and I’ll probably keep things lower key going forward. Obviously we were on holiday which was exciting enough, but we’d have had a holiday anyway, it just so happened that the week of her birthday was the best deal.

Talking of pressure, have you got a football pump and valve?

hourspassed · 22/08/2026 10:33

Needmorelego · 21/08/2026 21:43

I agree the iPad isn't a good choice for a 6 year old.
I don't see the issue with a goal either if he is really into football. Better to have connected presents than lots of different random stuff.
The trainers might be £10 from Primark though...the OP didn't say.

The unwrapping of gifts is certainly a “ thing “ among some families.
My 6 year old ( adult now ) got a mermaid Barbie , mermaid books / colouring books , pens and a new mermaid style shiny swimsuit .
Her big sisters wanted to choose her something too so got her a jelly cat plushie .
We had little friends round for tea and that was it

Chichix · 21/08/2026 22:26

The iPad is tacky, send it back

TheMaidofOrleans · 21/08/2026 22:17

Please don’t give him a six year old an ipad.
His childhood will be lost.
He is six and who cares if all his friends / tom/ dick and harry have one.
I see too many children addicted to screens in my job. And their parents wonder why they cannot concentrate on anything.
Be a parent and not one that does parenting by a screen.. !

TheMaidofOrleans · 21/08/2026 22:10

**Despair even.. forgotten how to spell in my despair

TheMaidofOrleans · 21/08/2026 22:09

How ridiculous.
He is 6!
Pressure from whom?
You are giving yourself the pressure
Is it all about stuff, opening stuff, and having stuff?
I despire sometimes.
