AIBU to be angry about comments on my granddaughters' names?

So, I have 5 grandchildren, this weekend I’m looking after all of them, my daughter and her husband are away to a wedding in France and my son and his wife have booked a little spa weekend.

I popped in to see some of my friends with them as I don’t often have the children and my friends like seeing them.

One of my friends had some other friends I’ve not met before over but we joined them. After introducing the children and then being sent to the kitchen to get a lollipop, one of these friends said oh don’t all the girls have little showgirl names, I must have looked a bit shocked as someone else then jumped in and said oh she doesn’t mean p*rnstar just very moulin rouge.

I just said I thought their names were lovely and moved on but now I’m back home I’m furious, I’m furious I didn’t give her a piece of my mind.

AIBU to think this is an absurd thing to say about children’s names?!

At least she didn’t say they sound like dog names, which is what I’d have thought. Now I have the song Lola, she was a showgirl.. song in my head all night.

Strippers/burlesque dancers/ low class a bit common girls& women is what it means.

Oh you mean the actual names, pp have posted them.

Ellenay · 21/08/2026 18:04

One of these names is correct.
Im not sure it really matters what they are called though?

I don’t think it’s a nice comment to make about little girls.

Well when parents call their children names that may stand out as a bit "different" their choice of course they need to expect comments I think.

wizzywig · 21/08/2026 18:21

But lola was a showgirl

Pistachiocake · 21/08/2026 18:21

Dooferer · 21/08/2026 18:04

I’m betting on Lola!

Well, you've probably got that stuck in everyone's head now!
People always do make judgments based on names-even children do it, despite us warning them not to.

columnatedruinsdomino · 21/08/2026 18:21

Interesting that both your children gave their children showgirl names! They obviously weren’t bothered about the ‘negative’ connotations so why would someone else pointing it out make you ‘furious’ and ‘angry’?

These aren’t from both of my children, these girls are all sisters, my other two grandchildren are my sons.

Some people just have no filter, my ds name sounds like an American pornstar apparently! I laughed and decided it said more about them as a person.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2026 18:23

They’re not commenting on little girls, they’re commenting on their parents’ choices.

Mumalala · 21/08/2026 18:23

Roxy reminds me of Chicago, which makes it pretty showgirl.

poolshoes · 21/08/2026 18:24

It’s a little rude but i’m sure she didn’t mean it

No, not Kitty. I fear this thread is just going to turn into a guessing game of their names instead of actually discussing the woman’s manners so I will share their names.
Lola, Roxy and Ruby.

That does sound like a wee dance troupe, TBF.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 21/08/2026 18:24

That’s a bit weird. Although, one of the kids on our street is called Lola and the only other Lola I’ve known was a stripper. So I guess it’s what your mind associates names with.

PinkyFlamingo · 21/08/2026 18:25

Screamingabdabz · 21/08/2026 18:15

But put together…op you’ve got to admit that does sound like a troupe of showgirls…😆

I'm hearing Barry Manilow "her name was Lola, she was a showgirl".

poolshoes · 21/08/2026 18:25

I wouldn’t worry, she sounds out of touch even the word showgirl is a little dated.

Likeiloveyou · 21/08/2026 18:26

It’s just a throwaway comment. You are being over sensitive.

Is that because you find the names a bit embarrassing? Ruby is quite normal though isn’t it?

Roxy and Lola does sound like a burlesque double act tbh.

Lararoft · 21/08/2026 18:26

Their names seem quite normal really, that woman was being bitchy.

I think we all have a Copacabana earworm now.

takealettermsjones · 21/08/2026 18:28

Well I mean they all have songs...

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
The name on everybody's lips is gonna be Roxie
Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby.... ah ah ah ah ah ah!!

IStillHearTheWaves · 21/08/2026 18:28

Wingedharpy · 21/08/2026 18:04

What are "showgirl names"?

Lola

takealettermsjones · 21/08/2026 18:29

OP, I genuinely don't think this was derogatory. I just think Copacabana popped into her head. It's not any more deep than that!

Indeed
And it could be worse
Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light
Ruby, don't take your love to town

👀

Oof your friend was not wrong!

lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2026 18:31

Ok so one of your children has showgirl tastes. Have you honestly never noticed this before?

Ruby not so much but Lola and Roxy?
