AIBU to be angry about comments on my granddaughters' names?

In my opinion, nothing at all.

My son’s girlfriend is a Ruby, it has never crossed my mind it’s a ‘showgirl’ name, she just gets a lifetime of ‘RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBY’ 😂 Even I can’t help singing it in my head when I see her

And Lola is a traditional Spanish name, diminutive of Dolores

Don't let the friend get to you. She was rude. But it was made ruder by the fact there is some substance to the showgirl comment. Only some, but enough to make her comment, imo, a bit barbed.

But they are fine, and I am sure they will come to give them their own unique twist.

Those names wont be everyones cup of tea but the friend hasnt said anything rude she just said they are showgirl names, which they are. Its you who has taken a negative view of that. Could it be that youre a bit sensitive about it because you aren't that fussed on their names but feel the need to defend your daughter?

Personally love ruby but cant imagine calling a little baby/girl Roxy because I just dont think its a nice name.

My daughters have unusual names, well not in the grand scheme of Apple or Lucky, but unusual enough for girls to be commented on, I’m a different age to you, judging by the fact you have grandchildren only, but I wouldn’t like that comment either, they have lovely names, I bet she was named Elaine, or Brenda. Very 1950s middle suburbia. Children aren’t their names, but like I said, they have lovely names so they’re probably lovely children.

I would be annoyed if someone suggested my children were named after topless dancers with big feather headdresses. Because thats a rude and unfiltered thing to say out loud.

However if I had given them "stagename" type names like Fifi or Roxy then I would only have myself to blame I suppose. High School is a merciless place, far worse than a gaggle of awd biddies. Fifi could call herself Fiona, Kitty - Katherine, etc. Perhaps the parents were going for a Boho vibe. Oops.

I think they are all lovely names - though my family is a little theatrical. It is a little odd for someone you've never met to make such a comment but I'm sure she didn't mean to offend you - probably thought she was being witty and clever. I expect, if she has any, her children and grandchildren don't have unusual names. My DD is called Aria - so that's pretty theatrical !

oh god. I sometimes say this to people meaning it as a compliment i.e. its a glamorous, famous person type name. Now I'm worried I've been offending people for years unintentionally! Especially to people with those names which were the exact three I guessed when I read your post.

I met a woman on holiday when DS1 was a baby. She was very posh, confident, glamorous- I was bedazzled by her. Her children were called Rafferty and Lola, this was 25 years ago.
Lola makes me think of her, or Charlie and Lola

I think if you are going to boil over like a jam pot over trivial things like this - I'd rather you not be around children. My preferred was of dealing with things is to ignore the trivial stuff, use humour, etc. Really you'd be doing your self no good if you let a lot of trivial things bump your blood pressure up - it's really not worth it. I guess if your friends really get to know and like the kids it's never going to come up again and if they get on with them and like them then that's all that matters isn't it. I'm actually not keen on my grand daughters name but she's a great kid to be around and I love being with her so I don't care about the name.
