AIBU to expect my sister to accept my fourth pregnancy when she is child free not by choice ?

My husband and I have been together for 11 years and married for 9. He is 49 and I’m 38.
He has two older children from his previous marriage, both of whom are still very much part of our household. They split their time between us and their mum, although realistically they’re here a lot. So although this will technically be my husband and my fourth child together, we already have a very full house. We’ve recently announced that we’re expecting our fourth baby together.

I’m obviously over the moon. This baby was planned, wanted and very much conceived because we both genuinely wanted another child. This is our last DH has since had a vasectomy. My sister, however, has taken the news really badly. She’s 44 and with a lovely partner who does have children. She was married for quite a long time to her ex, and apparently he had always told her that he “might” want children eventually. She waited because she loved him and trusted that he would change his mind.He never did.
They eventually separated and divorced and she’s now in the position of being childless when having children is something she desperately wants.

She has said to me that every single one of my pregnancies has felt like a punch in the stomach because I already have three children and am now having a fourth.
I completely understand that she’s hurting, and I have tried to be sensitive. I don't constantly talk about the pregnancy around her I’ve even avoided discussing names etc.
But she has now basically said that she feels I’m being incredibly insensitive by having another baby when I know how desperately she wants one.

This is where I’m struggling.I feel awful for her. I genuinely do. I can’t imagine wanting a child for years and not having one.
But at the same time, what exactly am I
supposed to do? My sister's situation isn't something I can fix. I can't give her my baby, and I don't think it's reasonable for me to not have my baby because she hasn't been able to have one. And, if I'm being completely honest, there is a part of me that feels angry because she chose to stay with a man for years who she knew was ambivalent about having children. She says he manipulated her and strung her along, whereas I think at some point she also had to make a choice about whether to stay.

I haven’t said that last part to her because I know it would be incredibly hurtful.
My husband thinks I’m being far too considerate already and says that while we should obviously be kind to her, our family planning is nobody else’s business.
My mum, however, has told me I need to “put myself in my sister’s shoes” and perhaps accept that she might not want much contact with me during the pregnancy or after the baby is born. I am fine with no contact my life shouldn’t stop for her to be happy.

I’m finding that difficult because we’ve always been very close, and I don't want my sister to resent my baby before he/she is even born.

I’m not asking whether I should have had the baby that ship has obviously sailed. I’m asking whether I’m being unreasonable in expecting my sister to accept that I’m allowed to be happy about my pregnancy despite knowing how painful it is for her.

I had my first at 44 (mind you my children were IVF and frozen for about 7 years before we decided we were ready)
your sister still has options!

it’s also a bit unfair to ask us to pass judgment on your situation as we don’t know you or your sister. What is your situation like OP, are you and your spouse so well off you can afford 6 kids? 2 from his previous and the 4 you have together?

I have to say, OP, you really dont get it, and nor can you. Speaking as a woman going through infertility, I don't believe that a woman who has children can ever fully get it. But maybe you need to put some perspective onto this - do you really think her hurtful comments* to you can ever compare to her feelings? If, as it sounds will be the case, she NEVER has children, she will have to deal with this pain and longing for the rest of her life. That feeling of grief/loss is simply not comparable to some snippy comments or something similar that you're experiencing from her. Her loss/pain is far greater than whatever you are feeling from her. Obviously it is not your FAULT that she feels this way but you ARE making her life more difficult (or feel more difficult to her) by having so many children particularly when it seems so be happening so easily. That's not something you can control or should change but it is a fact that many, many women in her position would feel the same.

I still remember 8 years ago (already going through infertility then) my sister saying in a group chat with me and our mum how she was feeling really down and emotional that this was going to be their last baby and they'd never have another. My baby nephew was a few weeks old and I was astounded at the insensitivity that she could have said this, knowing what I was going through (I can only assume her hormones made her forget).. I didnt comment or cause an argument but I never forgot.

*not that I am saying her comments are ok

But imagine how precious it will feel if you do eventually have a pregnancy. Then imagine someone pisses on your chips about it. Op has a right to enjoy her precious pregnancy. This baby is as special as her first and as special as an eventual pregnancy for a woman who has struggled to conceive. Its being ruined from the sidelines and that is not fair. Grandma needs to rethink this completely imo. She's facilitating the childless daughter's continued lashing out.

Joliefolie · 22/08/2026 19:10

People even thinking the OP should try to be a surrogate for her 44 yo sister (the sister is unlikely to need a surrogate, more like an egg donor and the OP is already 39 so not an ideal egg donor candidate)... if it didn't work out, the OP would have deliberately sabotaged her eggs or the pregnancy to spite her poor sister. Just NO! The ethics around surrogacy are irrelevant to this particular situation. It would be a terrible idea.

BeanNaGealai · 22/08/2026 19:06

Mackerelfillets · 22/08/2026 17:55

Would you carry a baby for her? Has she thought about surrogacy or adoption?

Most surrogacies involve exploiting under privileged women. Not an acceptable option.

I think she’s the one in far more pain here! This is really really massive! If I was you and this was my sister I’d be having a child for her. Honestly. Please consider doing this for her.

Seriously? You think the op should just hand over a baby to her because she wants one? What about the trauma the baby would have being removed from the woman who it bonded with over the course of the pregnancy? A baby is not a commodity to be passed on to someone just because they want one.

JJWT · 22/08/2026 18:57

I am very sorry that your enjoyment of pregnancy is being ruined in this way. It is not your fault. I'm not clear why she hasn't had a baby with her new partner. You say she's 44. I'm assuming she's been with him a while? Has she tried to get pregnant? None of her experiences are your fault. I had this. Its absolutely not fair. I literally had (MIL) "well, we won't mention THIS in front of X". That's a weird way to say congratulations and we're thrilled that we're going to be grandparents, isn't it? "THIS" is now 31. The BIL and wife never had a bio child. Was I to wait forever?? Enjoy your baby. There isn't a quota system.

Strokethefurrywall · 22/08/2026 18:50

Your sister is a massive twat. Tell her to do one.

Her choice to stay with her ex for so long, she could have gotten out when she knew he was stringing her along, she could choose to go it alone and try a sperm bank if she’s still fertile. She’s got options but she’s ignoring them and choosing bitterness.

Shes mad at herself because she’s taken a passive approach to her own life and now doesn’t have what she wanted because she allowed someone else to dictate it. She doesn’t get to take that anger out on you.

And yes, any normal and sane person within a close family would be delighted that there is another member of the family coming along.

hahabahbag · 22/08/2026 18:50

You are allowed to be happy, she’s allowed to be sad but what would be really inappropriate is for you to ever moan/complain about how hard your life is to get, you chose so many children

Nobody on this overcrowded planet is "entitled to have as many babies as they please," not even if they pay for every single thing for every child they have, their education, their medical bills etc etc. Over-population is the root cause of most of the planet's problems, and family allowances and other hand-outs should be stopped. Why should people be rewarded because they had sex without using contraception? Why should anyone else have to pay for the results of somebody's sex life???

Actually we have an alarming birth crisis. People need to be having more babies, not less. The problem is people are living too long.

Maybe we should have a cut off.

YourAquaLion · 22/08/2026 18:46

TheFunnyPoet · 21/08/2026 14:38

I’ve accepted her feelings but just her saying that it feels like a punch because we are expecting another child. That’s not a very nice thing to say to someone those thoughts should be kept to yourself or asking about our sex life

I am trying to but she’s said some very hurtful things to me and about my marriage. Her first reaction was pretty much to say that we fuck like rabbits.

She's allowed to be upset that you have choldren and she doesn't, however her entitlement ends there, she definitely does not have the right to be disrespectful and rude towards you, you can def call her out on that

Social infertility isn't the same as infertility. Personally I would have felt you were rubbing my nose in with having child after child when I was going through infertility.

You think someone else should not have children because you can’t?

Joliefolie · 22/08/2026 18:38

Hoping people ignore the last goady post and focus on the OP and her sister.

To give you a perspective from someone who went through 5 years of infertility (I am lucky to now have my little one) -

Your sister is clearly hurting, infertility is an awful thing to go through, whatever the reason. Being childless not by choice and watching other people announce their happy pregnancies really does hurt.

Clearly though, she's completely unreasonable to suggest you shouldn't have a child because of her pain.

She's projecting onto you, and is probably in a very vulnerable place. She probably doesn't actually mean what she said that you shouldn't have more children - she's just struggling and doesn't know quite what to say or how to cope. She probably feels stuck in her situation and she is watching everyone else play happy families.

So, I would take that comment for what it was - an outcry of pain, rather than anything that has any true meaning.

In your shoes I would just try to respond empathetically and move on.

"I understand that you are really hurting/ we can go for a coffee any time/ I'm here for you/ I really want you to be involved in the baby's life/ they will be so lucky to have you as their auntie". (But understand that this is not the same as having her own child - definitely don't tell her she should be grateful to be aunt!)

Don't focus on "well I can't do anything about it" - she knows that.

She'll still be hurting but just try to be there for her. She most likely knows that you can't and shouldn't change your life for her - she's just telling you that she's suffering and likely just wants to feel heard.

Edited

This is not the same though as she IS childless by choice!!! Did you not read the ops post where she said she CHOSE to stay with a man who didn’t want children until it was too late? She could have left, got another partner or even a sperm donor and had a baby but she CHOSE to stay with him instead!!

Unpaidworkmakestheeconomytick · 22/08/2026 18:14

So your sister has married another man who also doesn’t want children because he’s already had a couple with his ex?

Or is it that she is older than you and has been ttc with her new husband and it’s just not happening?

Joliefolie · 22/08/2026 18:13

Mackerelfillets · 22/08/2026 17:55

Would you carry a baby for her? Has she thought about surrogacy or adoption?

The OP has already said no to this question in the thread (not from the sister) but in any case, no matter what your feelings on surrogacy, it would be a terrible idea for the OP to even consider getting in that situation with her sister.

HollyhocksandPeons · 22/08/2026 18:09

Sorry, her ex is a wanker and you feel guilty? Naaa, nae chance. Congratulations!!!!!

Seriously? So you expected all of your family and friends to forego having children just because you couldn’t and if they didn’t, you believed they were having dc it to spite you?

That's the problem with narcissistic personality styles - they feel that everything anyone else does is somehow related to them.

oatybiscuits · 22/08/2026 11:55

This sounds like a very messy situation. When I lost my 4th baby I had a really good friend who was due 2 weeks before me, we had been bump buddies which was lovely. She was amazing and messaged me saying, I know you will find it hard to see me so the ball is in your court, just let me know what you want/need and I'll follow your lead. It was so supportive and made an awful situation a little easier. Sounds like you need to leave it up to her a little, understand she's hurting and you can't change that for her.
I also know the snarky comments people make when you're expecting your 4th (very much planned and wanted) baby and that can make all this stuff harder. It can be sad to feel like not everyone is excited to meet your brand new little person, but focus on your own wee family for just now 😊

Your sister feels how she feels as you feel how you feel about her situation, where she is crossing a line is by discussing these feelings inappropriately with you. You have things that you hold back on saying to her because you know they are hurtful but she does not give you the same level of respect.

She should be working through these feelings with someone more appropriate, her partner, a therapist.

It is truly heartbreaking that she has not had a longed for child but that is not a reason for her to project that hurt onto you inappropriately.

Don’t participate in these conversations with her anymore. You are not responsible for her feelings.
