To be annoyed by this neighbour

New neighbour moved into a social housing bungalow behind our house a few months ago. He has been a bit of a nightmare to be honest. He doesn't make excessive noise as such but he is definitely impacting us and our immediate neighbours. Some examples are, letting his dog out for a wee at 6am every morning. It then barks when in the garden. It only barks 2 or 3 times and he ushers it back in the house but it is very loud, waking us up each time. He also has excessively loud phone conversations on speakerphone throughout the day. I mean really loud. I was in my bedroom the other night with the window closed and I could hear everything the person on the end of the line was saying it was that loud. It makes sitting in our garden a bit of a nightmare now to be honest. This happens at least 5 or 6 times throughout the day up until about 10pm. He has a loud car which he loves to rev up constantly and the exhaust has been modified to make it even louder. Is this just normal behaviour these days or do I contact the social housing provider? I will not speak to him direct as I've been warned he's quite aggressive.

@Ereerenownow
He sounds terrible true
But that's the way most live like now
Cheek by jowl with people that if things had been different you'd have avoided like the plague
But I'm wondering
Is he deaf/hard of hearing
May explain the loud bolshie attitude

If you don’t know him, you obviously have no idea if he’s deaf.

If he was deaf he would be highly likely to use earpods, not a speakerphone.

forgot to add...dogs barking at 6am and revving cars are NOT normal noises and should not be acceptable to those living close to those who make these kinds of noises. I dont exactly live in a great area but I would be fuming if someone was letting their dog bark at 6am every morning and would consider them to be ignorant selfish gits!

The dog is said to go out for a wee at 6am, then is said to bark two or three barks and is then hustled inside by its owner. That sounds fine and pretty considerate to me 🙄

Anonymous notes are sent by cowards. Imagine being a new person living alone and looking at your neighbours and wondering who sent it.

Imagine being a new person who’s so inconsiderate as to already be disturbing his neighbours.

JohnofWessex · 21/08/2026 20:17

The issue with social housing is that there are terms in the tenancy agreement about not behaving anti socially.

As a result there is an expectation that landlords will take action which doesnt happen of you are an owner occupier or private tenant.

My god some of the comments on here have been appalling. The OP was simply asking a question and she even accepted that she may need to adjust her expectations when comments said she might just need to get used to it. I absolutely DO want to know if they own, social housing or private as it is relevant if the OP wants to make a complaint or get advice and it is part of the overall picture. There are some wonderful people on here who give heartfelt advice, whether they agree with the OP's or not and then unfortunately, theres the others....

Stormyrose · 21/08/2026 15:33

Issue here is op why is it relevant he’s in social housing, why did you feel you had to tell people that, becaude for the life of me I can’t see how thay changes things, other than if you want to complain to the ha to cause him issues.

this is just normal neighbour noise, it’s fine, and I don’t beleive for one moment he’s got someone unique phone that’s so loud you can hear it streets away

Pretending that social housing tenants aren't almost always worse than people who purchased the property isn't some great moral insight.

Neither is this stupid comment.

Mosaic123 · 21/08/2026 12:24

The hot still air near where I live, does seem to make the sound carry more than normal.

I'm hoping it's going to be quieter again when the weather changes. His house will have the windows shut and yours will be too so there is hope.

And the dog might change it's behaviour when it's cold and raining.

Good luck

Ignore the deliberate goaders OP. Sad sacks. He sounds like an absolute anti social scroat. Do anything you can to ensure he gets shifted. Sick of scumbags affecting other people in this world. 💐 for you.

Could you not just have a non confrontational chat?
Just smile and tell him you can hear every word, did he realise?
Maybe offer your services as a dig sitter if he ever needs one.
My neighbour games loudly in the early hours. We get on well so I don’t bother but also I know he can hear me snore because he yelled through the walls once and woke me up.
I think it’s much harder to be obnoxious if you get on at some level.

OP has already tried this - he told her to piss off.

She could’ve said landlord! Exactly the same thing. OP can pretend there was a relevance to it by saying “should I contact the SOCIAL HOUSING provider” (which is far more to type than landlord but means the same thing in this context, funny that!) but we all know this was absolutely said to try entice a hostile narrative towards social housing properties!

'We' don't 'all know' any such thing. Given the numerous times that the OP has said she doesn't have any particular issue with social housing and that her own parents live in social housing, Im doing her the courtesy of believing her rather than stomping about the thread with a weird Citizen Smith complex.

Foolish1984 · 21/08/2026 11:45

I have done and I still don’t think it’s relevant!

That’s fine, but she’s answered the question plenty of times, she’s obviously not going to come back with a different answer.

Christ Almighty, some people have a real chip on their shoulder.
She says, 'do I contact the social housing provider?' and some posters have advised her to do so.
If he was a home-owner she'd have asked/been advised about something relevant to that. If he was a private renter she'd have asked/been advised about something relevant to that.

Nope and I bet that's really annoying for you.

I’m far from annoyed. I am actually laughing about how defensive and cross you are 😂

Ereerenownow · 20/08/2026 21:51

No problem with challenges, I have a problem with ignorant rude comments by people who clearly have not read the threads

I have read the entire thread and I stand by my opinion. You are just throwing insults. Another thing that is a bad look on you

Or just non confrontational, or safe if you know he’s aggressive

Angelic999 · 20/08/2026 22:27

Op it would all annoy the hell out of me too.

However, I doubt the housing provider will care as he's not doing anything illegal. They'll be regularly dealing with anti social behaviour and noise on the extreme end of the spectrum so they're unlikely to care much about this tbh.

I think the best thing to start with is to say "hello how are things are you settled in yet, have a few pleasantries then word it along the lines of "I'm sure you don't want me overhearing every word of your private conversations so I'm just letting you know that the noise really carries" and see if he takes the hint and lowers the volume. He probably won't though!

I honestly don't see that he's doing anything unusual or making any more noise than any other neighbour would. Yes the engine would annoy me but again it's hardly unusual. It does from this post sound like you've just taken a dislike to him to be honest.

Oh come on so you think having loud speaker phone conversations multiple times a day and revving a noisy exhaust is normal and you'd be fine with it? Yeah right.

ilovesooty · 20/08/2026 22:17

I'd be annoyed by the car exhaust but the rest of it doesn't seem such a big deal to me. I can't believe someone suggested contacting your MP.
