Avoid In-laws because of jokes about my appearance

butterfly245 · 19/08/2026 16:17

I have always been short, which my in-laws have always found hilarious. Whenever I see them there are comments on my heights, comparing me to the children, jokes etc etc. sometimes I laugh it off, sometimes I roll my eyes, but on a couple of occasions I have actually made it clear I don’t find it funny. One family member once asked me if I mind it and when I said I didn’t like it they stopped. The others haven’t (the children now join in).

I didn’t go to the last family occasion because I’m getting tired of it (it’s been over 10 years). I told DH and said I was happy for him to go and to take the kids too, but he said he didn’t want to (it’s a 2 hour drive and they’re not particularly close). When he told his SIL (just said we couldn’t come) she expressed some disappointment. We have one of the kids (teenager) coming to visit soon and I don’t know how to respond if any comments come up.

I’d love some advice on how to handle future comments. AIBU to be irritated to the point of avoiding them or should I get a thicker skin?

OP you are being bullied.
A joke on you is not a joke if you don't find it funny, if it's constantly repeated it's bullying!
The next time someone says something, don't lower yourself to there level, just state with a straight face I don't find that funny at all, have a little sign, to exaggerate the point, then get up and walk out of the room. Someone will come and find you, if they don't, then you should have a back up plan to leave.

You asked about the up coming visit of a teenager, my thought is that they probably think this behaviour is okay if they have seen their family get away with it. If they are brave enough to say anything in your home, I suspect they won't. Then ask them to sit down and explain the house rules, they will have been taught at school about bullying and inappropriate comments. Point out that this type of behaviour is not okay in school, it's totally not acceptable in your house and absolutely will not be tolerated in a workplace environment.
I would also mention that your BIL knows you don't like it, your SIL knows you don't like it, but is forgetful. You tolerate it from your MIL, because after all she is your MIL, and is getting old and has probably forgotten what being bullied in the playground feels like.
It would be interesting to see if any of those comments get back to the appropriate people, if they do and they try to call you out on it, your in the right and I'm sure DH will back you up
Good luck

I’m small too and I return those remarks with ‘good things come in small packages’ and a quote from Shakespeare that goes
“Though she be but little, she is fierce” if I was you I’d definitely channel the second one!

We also say “Diamonds don’t come as big as bricks”

thestudio · 21/08/2026 20:37

To butcher Winston Churchill:

"It's true I am short. Worse, I will always be short, but you could be slim one day."

They have said something and DH did it years ago. When I’ve given a look to the kids they’ve said sorry but it just doesn’t stick they seem to forget with every next visit.

DH is 6ft and the rest just under. The kids are taller than me, part of SIL joke is to stand them next to me which to be fair I nipped in the bud but now the kids do it themselves and the teenager tends to rest his arm on my head etc. last time I did say to him “I’d watch where my elbow is if I were you”.

To the INCREDIBLY cheeky teenager reading his arm on your head… you need to promptly push his arm off your head and say “Excuse me, please have some respect. I expect you to never again rest your arm on my head. It hurts my neck and is just so incredibly insulting. You should know better.” Then walk off.

2ndNatureTime · 21/08/2026 19:05

Id ask them if they're tired as the obviously got up extra early to a cunt today

DH told his SIL a long time ago and it stopped for the next couple of visits but just started back up again.

Im 5ft exactly. So yes short, but honestly, I’d never been picked on for it until I met my in-laws. I was quite shocked to find it was such the butt of a joke and just assumed it would die down I suppose.

I'm 5ft 1" and yes the odd time it's been a joke as even my grandchildren are all talker than me, however it's cruel for you to be the butt of size jokes all the time, that's never been an issue for me. Hooe you get it to stop x

Pretty overweight yes…I can just imagine how well it would go down if I said something to them!
once my MIL commented that I must find it easy to hold my toddlers hand because I “am closer to the ground”. My DH did lose it at her then and told her it was a stupid comment.
I whispered to him afterwards I wish I was closer to the fridge like she is 🤣

You should point out that the fatties seem to have no problems reaching the cake shelf!

Your other half should have said that is the reason your not going so it might sink in that it is not okay. Surprised the one that stopped after you said you didn't like it didn't say something to the others even discretely.

When they visit if they say something, just say you not comfortable with the jokes about your height and if they do it again ask them to leave. Your house your rules. Something needs to happen to make them realise it's not okay

I think your husband telling his sister that ' you don't like height jokes' is a kinda pathetic attempt at standing up for you OP, considering how long it's gone on and how it makes you feel at this point.
It was wishy washy and it puts the focus on you as being something (inevitable) you can't handle.
He needs to tell people that it's rude/boring/offensive/repetitive/bullying/disrespectful
They all actually know that you hate it. They KNOW.
Id tell your husband he needs to make it clearer, and that you have reached your absolute bloody limit now and you have never found it funny and still dont, and that you are voting with your feet because none of his lot seem to get the message

Packofsix · 21/08/2026 09:05

Not a thicker skin…. But a louder mouth. Tell them, in no uncertain terms that you don’t find it funny and they need to stop or you will not feel welcome and will stop seeing any of them. End of

anon666 · 21/08/2026 08:20

I'm intrigued. Are they all giants?

Internationally 5ft really isn't that short!

I say this because my dad's family are all hugely tall, and competitive with it. His parejts were both tall, and I think they all married tall partners except my dad, as my mum is the very ordinary height of 5ft 4. I'm now 5ft3 but my younger cousins were all taller than me and it was a constant source of amusement.

Some families are obsessed with stuff like this. If, like them, its just a source of common ground, then I'd be inclined to suck it up. On the other hand, if it's just you they "banter" with, its bullying. Then they can piss off.

I’d just write in the family group chat

i know if I say anything about the height jokes, you’ll all get defensive, say they are meant as a joke. I’ve had enough though, I don’t enjoy your jokes. So rather than upset myself I’m going to avoid family gatherings if it happens again. This obviously puts the ball in your court. You’ll probably have an opinion on whether I’m sensitive or it’s correct I should behave like this, that’s your opinion & not mine about the matter.

DraigCymraeg · 21/08/2026 06:39

HotGrapefruit · 19/08/2026 16:52

Lol! I wish you'd said this.

I'm the same height and I quite LIKE all the short jokes. I'm sorry you don't because that must be bothersome.

The toddler thing is more an observation, rather than something rude. Are you sensitive about your height?

I tend to refer to everyone else as 'Lofty' and worse.

Twelve years on, and they are still commenting? Come on, that's extremely boring at best.
You may not mind the comments but OP does. That alone should be enough. It does not make the Lady 'sensitive'.

Redpaisley · 21/08/2026 00:07

But after their responses how do these people react? To they laugh with you or get offended?

I don't think she cares. Good for her.

Anonyanonay · 21/08/2026 00:37

I'm just over 5ft and I can't even remember anyone teasing me for it since I left school. It's not that unusual ffs. I do, however, occasionally moan about not being able to reach the top shelf in the supermarkets.

Redpaisley · 21/08/2026 00:07

partmermaidpartplant · 20/08/2026 22:54

I am just under five foot. My tactic is to repeat whatever comment people make about my height with the equivalent about them

you’re dwarf
you’ve got a big nose - did you know ?

also for men
and you are bald - shame for you but at least toy can get a nice wig

you’re short
yes, well done, I am short. And you are ugly bad luck.

you are quite small
oh really ? Lucky I am cute. Not you like you mate

shorty here….
yeah fuck off cunt face (with. Big smile)

you are well small.
OMG ! I didn’t notice ! Thank you genius

people don’t tend to mention it twice - or they avoid me so I don’t have to see them twice
win win

in your situation after the next ‘short’ comment I would mutter quite loudly ‘fat cunt’ and probably that would be the end of it

but I am a bitch but people don’t fuck with me

You or DP tell them you are tired of being butt of their jokes, so you will not attend family reunions.

How tall are they?

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 20/08/2026 23:58

I'm tall and have had similar from in laws and new work colleagues. I let it slide the first few times and then say "Well, if we are going to make comments about appearance, none of you will mind if I start listing my observations will you?" and that normally stops people in their tracks.

sunnymummy238 · 20/08/2026 23:12

I deal with those type of comments by saying - Oh my mother always told me it was rude to make comments about a persons appearance.

I feel your pain. I have massive boobs and my friend of over 20 years always always feels the need to mention them. Following thread for advice.

I’m just over 5ft 1 with massive boobs! Imagine my pain! 😬😂 People comment on both regularly but not in a nasty way. I’m quite feisty though so they probably know they would get it back. I think as other posters have said, focus on something negative to say about them to see how they like it!

xino · 20/08/2026 22:12

They sound really thick. For that reason alone I wouldn’t want to spend any time with them.

MyCoolHedgehog · 20/08/2026 22:10

Its not fair if them.

I usually come back with everyone has their own height of perfection some reach it quicker than others.

I dont tend to get many people mention my height im 5ft 1.5 so a little taller than op but I know loads of people who are a good few inches shorter than me. One wears heels and is still just above my shoulder.

Challenger2A7 · 20/08/2026 22:09

I'm short and I had to shut a friend up, I said "Height is not an achievement requiring brain power." She never mentioned it again.
