AIBU to see my MIL's reaction as manipulative and cruel?

My MIL and step-FIL visited us about a month ago while DH was away (I posted about this already, but in a different context). It was awful, I felt like I was being punished the whole stay with a lot of passive-aggressive jibes. Notably, during that time, MIL took me aside and told me off for being "jealous" of my husband's attention towards the baby, apparently assuming this was why I'd been upset with him around my birthday. The following day, she then explicitly asked me about our sex life. She then said that if she'd been "all shredded down there," she wouldn't want to have sex either and that I would lose my husband's interest if I didn't. She knew I'd had very severe tearing during birth. I found this incredibly insensitive and insulting, particularly given how vulnerable I've been this year.

I told DH about it when he got back, but he spent the following weeks avoiding confronting his mum.

Yesterday, he finally decided to speak to her by phone to set the record straight, which I was not expecting.

He actually went into the conversation trying to take some responsibility himself, saying that perhaps he'd miscommunicated something about an argument we had just before they arrived and that I was not a jealous person. Instead of asking what had happened or trying to understand why I was upset, MIL got very heightened, categorically denied saying any of it, and immediately turned the conversation around to how hurt she was by me.

She said she's miserable and depressed, that we don't care about her, that she only ever tries to be my friend and I make her feel unwelcome. Step-FIL then joined in, saying they'd both apparently been "extra nice" to me during their visit because of the argument. MIL eventually agreed that she would speak to me to make amends.

Shortly afterwards, she sent DH a very long text message saying she was hurt beyond belief, was not going to apologize for something that didn't happen, that all I wanted was to drive a rift in the family, that she is generous and kind, and that everything I'd said had never happened and was all made up.

Step-FIL then messaged DH saying he needed to call him first thing this morning.

DH spoke to him this morning, and he continued to deny everything for both of them, saying there may have been a "misunderstanding" and that MIL was simply very hurt. However, it seemed maybe there was some conceding on his half about crossed wires, which was positive, but unsure why he had to step in.

However, shortly after that call, MIL sent DH a complete tirade of messages, listing everything I've apparently ever done wrong since 2016, calling me a liar and saying that all he has done is hurt her because he has listened to my lies. She also said she "doesn't want to live anymore" because of all this and shes never going to see her grandson again.

What I find really odd, is that all the things I find difficult about her - like I can't seem to have a proper conversation with her, she sends a message, I respond, but she never responds back. Doesn't respond to baby photos. Makes me feel super unwelcome by pretending I'm not in room, etc. She has turned back on me again, saying I do these things to her.

At no point has she acknowledged what she said to me, apologised, or even shown any curiosity or concern about why I was upset.

DH is absolutely devastated. He feels like he's lost his safe space with his mum because he genuinely believed he could speak to her honestly and have a reasonable conversation.

What's particularly upsetting is that DH wasn't even attacking her. He was trying to address something that had happened a month ago and explain why it had upset me, especially with my PPD. Somehow the entire conversation has become about how badly she has been treated, with everything being denied and turned back onto me. It's literally all become about her.

This seems like such a crazy escalation. I'm struggling to know how to interpret this reaction, but it seems very manipulative and cruel towards my husband.

Wait is this the creepy step-FIL who keeps trying to change your baby’s nappy?

Tuesdayschild50 · 19/08/2026 21:15

She is extremely manipulative responding in these ways.
If anyone is driving a wedge its the parents and she seems to have step father backing her up .
For the sake of your own family look after the 3 of you and take some space away from them that really is the right thing to do .
This behaviour needs to be stopped your husband is a grown man and doesn't need to be spoken to by his step father in that way either who do they think they are.

Treemouse · 19/08/2026 20:45

Ewwww who are these mums who are advocating for their sons to get a shag from their post partum partners?!! Why are they thinking about that and why do they care? It’s so weird!
that aside - you’ve been treated terribly OP. I agreed with pps that your MIL is a narcissist and unfortunately you aren’t ever going to be able to reason with her - especially as she is being enabled by step FIL

Pinkbananaa · 19/08/2026 20:26

She sounds like my dm. Completely manpulative and rotten to the core. You cant reason with a narcassist. Ive since gone nc for my own peace.

Isitevensummer · 19/08/2026 20:16

Any time there's a suggestion that Someone is suicidal like this, it's a sign of extreme manipulation. No one reasonable would act like that. As a pp said , you can't reason with the unreasonable.

DaisyChain505 · 19/08/2026 19:38

Your husband needs to stop running to mummy everytime he’s a bit annoyed at you.

Your husband needs to be as infuriated as you are at the things his mum has said to you.

Your husband needs to make it extremely clear that the way she’s treated you isn’t going to be tolerated.

You need to stop seeing her, especially when your husband isn’t even there. Why would you host someone you clearly don’t get along with alone? Surely you’d communicate with your husband that you’re not willing to do it given the history between the two of you.

You can’t win with people like this. Cut her from your life, tell your husband he can continue his relationship with her but you don’t want to hear about it. Protect your peace and your family and stop playing into this drama.

BettyBoh · 19/08/2026 19:25

This is classic narcissistic behaviour.

Teamrabbit · 19/08/2026 19:11

diddl · 19/08/2026 19:06

I played this rodeo with ex mil - even tried live bombing her.

Great typo!

😂😂 should have full on atomic bombed - her tbf she’d survive it and still have a fag in her gob with a glass of red!

QueenietheGreat · 19/08/2026 19:10

@GreenAcreFarm22
Just block these two chunks of cancerous human misery completely from your life, you deserve better than continual deliberate misery
DH will eventually soon be having the scales falling from his eyes about his twisted vicious mother when he still initially tries with her
As there's that shitty stupid saying about blood been thicker than water
But if he thinks about it he'll do as you're going to
Aren't you??????

diddl · 19/08/2026 19:06

diddl · 19/08/2026 19:05

I'm struggling to know how to interpret this reaction,

Don't waste time trying.

I wouldn't bother with them any more.

I'd want to advise your husband to do the same but he obviously needs to make his own decision.

shes never going to see her grandson again.

How great that would be if she stuck to it.

He'd be better off without her!

Teamrabbit · 19/08/2026 18:43

You are never ever ever going to win her over - ever.

I played this rodeo with ex mil - even tried live bombing her.

When people believe their own shit - nothing you do or say or ANYBODY else’s says is going to change her narrative.

Save yourself years of heart ache snd stress and cut her off now.

Hildegard25 · 19/08/2026 18:42

The main problem I see here is your husband's relationship with his Parents.

You do not need their vitriol, so step back.
It is up to your DH what relationship he and children have with his Parents.
Of course where children are concerned this must be jointly agreed on.

You do not need to put up with anything inflamatory.
Just block, ignore, and never be in their company unless you want to be.

But your DH obviously had a conversation with her about your sex life. The very fact your MIL referenced it and said about you being "all shredded down there" means he did.
That's not 'obvious' at all. She knew the OP had very severe tearing during birth. She was quite feasibly going off that.

Maybe, maybe not. But the OP also said "MIL took me aside and told me off for being "jealous" of my husband's attention towards the baby". I don't think it's a completely off the wall idea to think that perhaps her husband is over sharing with his mother. It has been known.

@GreenAcreFarm22 But your DH obviously had a conversation with her about your sex life. The very fact your MIL referenced it and said about you being "all shredded down there" means he did. If he's feeding his mum that sort of information then who knows what else he's telling her. I'm not defending your MIL per se, but she might feel like piggy in the middle and genuinely (although very badly) be trying to be some sort of confidante. Personally I'd look closer to home for the root of this horrible mess.

I'd have told them both to leave my house after the question about your sex life. And I'd have no problem not seeing or speaking to either of them ever again.

Bluetray · 18/08/2026 13:31

I don't think you can ever change such ugly, nasty, and narcissistic people.

You have to protect yourself ruthlessly or they WILL destroy your mental health and your life.

I think you need to refuse any further contact or entry to your home.

Your husband can choose to have a relationship if he wishes away from you and your home.

Have you a supportive family?
You need them and friends to stay close and support you.

Under no circumstances whatsoever have another child whilst you have this turmoil and drama around you.

Your husband either suports you or your relationship will not survive.

It is hard to believe that this appalling behaviour has come out of nowhere?
Surely your husband has been witness to this for years and your treatment?

Why has he allowed it?
Why have you had a child with him if he has?

Please reach out for support.

Knittedfairies2 · 18/08/2026 13:20

Just drop the rope; don't give this woman another thought, and don't let her live in your head. Your husband has finally seen what his mother is like, and how she's been treating you over the years. Take yourself out of the equation; time for him to sort it out.

Chickensilkie · 18/08/2026 13:16

Does a grown man need a safe space wirh mum and is mum a safe space anyway ? Id say not.

Just move on now op they sound dreadful and her upset doesnt trump yours.

EveryoneUsingOutro · 18/08/2026 13:14

Textbook narcissist behaviour - play the victim when called out on their appalling behaviour.

Just block and avoid for your own peace, she will never be normal or have normal relationships.

If your DH wants to read up on it to manage his relationship with her better, fine. He may discover he’s in FOG (fear, obligation, guilt) and learn about patterns set in his childhood.

likeitshard · 18/08/2026 13:07

You have tried to address it and it backfired. I’d say to your dh you don’t want anything more to do with her but he should keep his relationship with them . If they visit they can stay I. A hotel and your dh can meet them with dc.

Airyfaerie · 18/08/2026 11:23

This is classic DARVO tactics used by narcissists for manipulation. Look it up, and look up Dr Ramani on YouTube and watch some of her videos. You can't change these people or reason with them unfortunately, you just have to learn the strategies to deal with them. Unfortunately we've been through the same with my own in-laws, I could write a book about their shenanigans. In our case it was mainly directed towards their son (my DH) and his father was the main offender, but it's all eerily similar. We are no contact now because it just wasn't worth the mental torture they put us through.

SunCloudRain · 18/08/2026 11:15

It is DARVO but it's also possible that she has hurt you AND you have hurt her (intentionally or not) .

If you're both genuine and mature it can be sorted out, but it's unlikely you can really have the depth of conversation needed.

Leave her to DH, he can facilitate relationship with DC and manage any visits if you still want those.

Chilly80 · 18/08/2026 11:02

Block her and FIL.
No invites to the house ever again.
Protect your mental health.

Kroovy · 18/08/2026 11:02

I have a similarly psychotic MIL. Just this year I have quietly gone no contact with her, which I was worried about, but life has been bliss so far. I’m not sure she’s noticed yet but I’m not backing down. I’ve blocked her on Facebook and WhatsApp and now my husband is visiting only. She knows I like to do a digital detox so that will be me for the next forever as far as she knows. I’ve requested to not know what she says or talks about during his visits, it’s his fight now. All communication is through him. I’m already looking forward to a Christmas where I’m not bracing for impact, biting my tongue or checking my watch. I can just head straight to my mum’s and DH can sort that side out
