AIBU to think heatwave barbecue reactions are starting to feel a bit Covid?

Was that the one where the illegal converted camper on its way to Boomtown caught fire and has destroyed the A31 near Ringwood and caused mayhem in peak holiday time, it is going to take weeks to repair the road.

Again, it feels like the uk completely overreacts, live in a Southern European country that has higher temperatures and for much longer. Bbqs have never been banned and we’re allowed to water our gardens, sprinklers on. I just don’t understand it?

As from what I’ve read, all of the wildfires in the UK this year (or vast majority) have been from bbqs, cigarettes, campfires, fireworks etc

In what way has the OP been misunderstood? They are comparing the alert and warnings about not being reckless and starting fires, which have destroyed swathes of the countryside and people’s homes, to Covid restrictions. Starting fires when the country is tinderbox dry is incredibly reckless.

It's not illegal to have a gas BBQ in your garden.

This was before they were officially banned.

The ban has only been in for a few hours but they had threatened it for a couple of weeks (hoping people would use their common sense).

People are using them still just to ‘fight the system’

Majority of wildfires are caused by human activity yes. But not BBQs.

Majority of human causes of wildfires:

• agricultural burning/land clearing
• arson
• farm and industrial equipment (sparks from diggers or logging equipment or tractors, that sort of thing)
• electricity infrastructure

and only then - campfires, fireworks, cigarette and last are BBQs

People have been filming themselves buying up BBQs and having them in parks etc just to show how ‘cool’ they are.

They are lying to make a point. No one did this as they are banned and you can’t buy them.

Most people have used common sense and realised that having disposable BBQs and letting off fireworks is dangerous.

The government and media then had to remind people constantly about the dangers.

Unfortunately, for some they still did not understand and now have to be actually told this and have a rule enforced because they can’t use common sense.

And then you have the deniers saying it’s a way to control the people blah blah blah.

It would lovely if we could live in a world where people used their common sense and listened to the experts.

Fields don't spontaneously combust, climate change creates the dry conditions, but the fires are caused by humans, whether BBQ, cigarette, vape batteries exploding, glass etc.

Two weeks ago I spoke to lots of people and no one was aware of the massive wildfires all over the country, so the mobile phone message was sensible.

This warning should have been in place since June. I'm talking about what op asked regarding feeling like covid. This was a non-issue to peole and nobody had a problem with having a bbq on tuesday but now because of 'rules' people are threatening in all sorts of things eventhough hence "suddenly" it is dangerous where as this has been a problem for weeks/months.

We’re in a part of France where all barbecues are banned. The authorities are using drones to detect those who are still having them and you can face a prison sentence. Almost all wildfires are caused by humans being idiots and/or arsonists.

Some people cannot cope with being told what to do and always have to ‘fight the system’ regardless of what it is.

I’ve seen several people buying up multiple disposable BBQs and admitting that they’re going to use them every day.
These are the same people who refused to use masks and follow the rules.

I think some people are just miserable and this makes them feel a little bit better about themselves.

There is definitely a link between someone who is abusive/controlling and not following rules.
I think it’s because they need to always feel in control constantly.
