Camping dilemma since fire alert

Where are you plugging that in?

Not all campsites have electric points on the pitches.

Does the site have a designated communal cooking area…….i know places do in Europe……..and might be an option in this case??

Yes, I double checked the wording of the emergency alert. People are urged not to "undertake any activities that could cause fires", and disposable BBQs, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks are mentioned.

I don't see how a gas cooker, off the ground, that is by its nature constantly monitored while on and goes rapidly cold when switched off, constitutes a risk.

I'm shocked that someone who's a regular camper doesn't know this. And it makes me wonder how many people take this risk when camping.

i did report a man down the road for using a hose pipe on his front grassed garden, he was blatantly using the hosepipe
i reported anonymously, turns out the ban started the next day!

We’re camping at the moment - there’s no reactions on using gas stoves. It’s just charcoal BBQs and fire pits.

Are there no options for electric hook up pitches to move to at the same campsite? How are you keeping food cold etc without an electric hook up for cool box/fridge?

Probably- I suspect- people who have never camped.

Some of these suggestions are making me hoot. "Surely there's a Dominoes nearby...just get an EHU...just get Reception to fill you up a flask...." My favourite campsite is a field in the middle of Dartmoor, and boasts a toilet and a tap. The farmer turns up every evening for his tenner in cash 😆

Agree with the people saying they have changed their terms and conditions and you should send them some sort of legal letter to get your refund.

That’s the way it is when you run a business unfortunately.

And like a pp said, call other local sites to ask how they are managing it. Try to get in touch with the site to suggest that, but ultimately you should be refunded if they won’t budge.

Sandwiches and cereal and goodies would do the job surely? We had to go a week without electricity in the storm last year

And so the campsite should refund the booking as it’s not what was booked. You can’t sell somewhere to camp with cooking and then ban cooking food.

Really? Tea and coffee, hot chocolate sachets, noodles, tins of soup, chilli, beans etc. Do you keep those in the fridge?

The ground is so dry and forest fires can travel very far and quickly under the ground because the tree roots are on fire. So even if the air is cooler it has nothing to do with it.

I've camped in the middle of a pine forest in the Landes before, and although understandably camp fires were banned, it was perfectly fine to use gas stoves and there was a central communal barbecue area for campers to use.

I really do hope you are joking. How can anyone not follow this?

What really xxxxx me off

I used to visit a well known National Park frequently

There were 100s of signs saying
No BBQs
No camp fires

People would arrive with huge BBQ cooler boxes & set up to cook
Totally ignoring all the signs

The park rangers would walk round & tell people off. I have seen with my own eyes.

People would also wild camp on the hill tops & set fires

Some people are selfish !

Some people do not care !

Several wild fires have occurred each year

People should enjoy the countryside & "leave no trace"

But the site needs to have electricity points for you to use them with. I’ve been to quite a few UK campsites where that’s not an option and if the OPs site is a basic one it’s probably the case there, too.

You can buy electrical hookups for tents. We used to camp when I was young, had full electricity. Can get them on Amazon for under £20.

You probably have a very good case to cancel as they are unable to provide facilities required under the Government ban.

So am I correct in that the campsite have said no camping stoves allowed? And there are showers but no other facilities?

I wouldn’t want to go camping to a basic site for a week with no option to heat food / boil water. A night or two possibly, bug even that doesn’t sound appealing.
A car kettles, as suggested earlier, are completely crap.

Yes I have camped in the last couple of weeks in a tent on motorbikes

We also have a camper van that we have used recently

I was surprised that a camp site was still allowing camp fires when every thing was so dry.
We did not have a camp fire

But we have used gas stove & in van

Oh I feel for you OP. I understand it can’t be helped and the campsite is being sensible, but it will rather put a dampener on your holiday. I couldn’t contemplate camping without tea, personally. Although if my children were little and still wanted to go, I suppose I’d grit my teeth and get on with it. I hope you manage to make the best of it and have a good break.

I'm pretty sure at least 50 per cent of people on this thread offering advice never actually camp themselves, and that a decent percentage of them don't actually know what a camping stove is or entails.
