AIBU to be annoyed guests announced vegan diets on arrival?

I have guests. They have stayed before. No dietary requirements and no food dislikes. To accommodate them my child has to vacate her bedroom and spend the week on an airbed in our room which she very kindly does. Anyway guests have arrived and I have shopped, meal planned and prepared lunch, homemade quiche etc . They have now said “since we last visited we have both become vegetarian and dairy free as it is healthier” - so basically vegan. I am so annoyed. Had I been given the heads up I could have prepared and shopped accordingly . Aibu to be hacked off and have said that given their failure to let me know I won’t be able to accommodate that but can use what I have bought and minimise the amount of meat or they can shop for their own supplies and cook for us all? To be clear had I known in advance I would have accommodated their dietary fads. To be clear there is no medical grounds for any of this. They were already getting a week of free food and board and as we live in a very desirable holiday location would have been paying in the region of £800 to book an air BnB. They are not really family either and have in the past been ok guests though last time they were bemused I had not taken A week off to entertain them and take them places.

Oh dear. That’s just horrid. I would have simply sent them packing. As all your pots and pans have had meat cooked in them before.
I would have said they can stay the night but they are going home tomorrow. As you don’t want them driving home at night as (you know their conversation would have been disrespectful towards you. & others don’t need an accident!)

I would tell them they need to shop and cook for themselves, as they failed to inform you before they arrived and you've already paid out a lot of money on food for the week for them, and are not prepared to pay more for their preferred diet, nor are you prepared to cook separate meals as you don't run a cafe! They don't need to cook for everyone though! That's ridiculous.

T1Dmama · 24/08/2026 13:20

Only seeing this now. Find it extremely rude
of them to turn up and expect you to supply food and lodgings free of charge anyway.
zz not to mention expecting you to cook for them… and then throw in the fact you’ve got cancer and having treatment thats making you poorly. I am a little shocked that they’re staying with you at all!! In their shoes I’d be booking a B&B near by and visiting you daily and taking you out for lunch or taking your DD out to gone you some resting time.
anyway hope their visit turned out ok and really hope you’re doing ok and I hope this is beatable.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 23/08/2026 15:25

@RampantIvy Er? Why? The op has said they are god parents and, as she is ill, they are likely to assume a prominent role in DDs life in the future. Why won’t that apply to preparing means for her?

RampantIvy · 23/08/2026 12:19

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 23/08/2026 11:26

So if DD was looked after by these people she would have to be vegan too? Hmm. I would rethink plans.

Scratch this. I have re-read the OP.

Inertia · 23/08/2026 08:09

I’m genuinely astonished by the thoughtlessness of these people.

Who on earth turns up at the home of someone undergoing cancer treatment who has already bought food in and only then announces a major dietary preference, and then acts surprised when their whims can’t be immediately catered for ?

Caring friends would have brought food, or offered to cook and care for you and your daughter to allow you to rest.

It sounds like you are not confident about long term outcomes for your health, which I’m very sorry to mention. It sounds like these friends have a lot of learning to do if they are to be any help to your daughter.

Seajaye · 23/08/2026 07:05

It was totally unreasonable for them not to tell you in advance IF they were expecting you to cater for their new diet. Perhaps it's recent decision, so they planned on making an exception while staying with you and enjoying your free hospitality..

I guess all you can say that as you were not informed in advance that you assume they have brought some items of food with them and will cater for themselves, and where the nearest shop is,v. You could adapt what you were planning to cook by omitting the animal products from recipes ( without substitution) and cooking your meat element of the meat separately.

I guess you can still offer toast and marmalade without butter for breakfast, and hope they bought a couple of cartons of plant milk, vegan spread and soya yoghurt with them or they planned on making exceptions for you .

Whyherewego · 16/08/2026 11:37

This is so rude! You absolutely should tell them that these are the meals youve planned and shops have been done so they will need to go out and source their own vegan food

MischkasMum · 16/08/2026 11:35

You are definitely NOT being unreasonable! Tell them to go and shop for their new dietary requirements as you have already forked out for food for their stay. I think these folk are ripping the piss out of you and are just free-loading at your expense.

I'd ensure this is their last free holiday, ungrateful bastards. Oh, and if they make a song and dance about the food, tell them to fuck off to an hotel.

Vegans don’t eat eggs.

Surely vegetarian and dairy free means no meat or dairy but still eggs?

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 08:37

Smile sweetly and direct them to nearest restaurant. Explain you had no idea they had become vegan or you would have prepared different food. Now you don't have time or additional money to do it all again but restaurants will be able to accommodate them.

RampantIvy · 16/08/2026 07:36

Floppyearedlab · 15/08/2026 23:40

I wouldn't accommodate faddy eating trends in my house.
A life threatening allergy or genuine medical requirement - fine. Not this.

So, you think being vegan is faddy? Do you think vegetarians are faddy aa well?

You sound uneducated.

JadeSeahorse · 11/08/2026 12:14

Offer them beans on toast as the alternative to anything you have preplanned which they claim they can't eat and do ensure they are the cheap, own brand supermarket beans.

Anything else they'll need to obtain themselves.

At least they then can't claim that you never offered an alternative. Job done!

Agreed. Beans on toast, jacket potato, roasted vegetables, soup and salad.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2026 23:00

Because they’re freeloaders and inconsiderate ! The OP has active terminal cancer, THEY should be shopping and cooking and looking after their friend

NOT freeloading

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2026 21:53

I don’t know how to say this but do you really think they will step up when you’re gone ? Flowers

it’s YOU that needs to be taken care of

Why would you comment this ?

LoyalShaker · 15/08/2026 22:45

I would not go out of my way to host them again!

Conniebygaslight · 15/08/2026 22:34

”Oh that’s great to hear, I’m sure you’ve researched the area to find where your needs can be accommodated”

Stinkybooks · 15/08/2026 22:32

Very unreasonable of them not to let you know well in advance and to check you were ok catering for their new diet.
But yabu to describe their diet as a fad unless it seems likely that it will be a short lived choice for them (Ive been veggie for 30 years so deffo not a fad for me!)

CalliopeFosterBeauchamp · 15/08/2026 22:30

SettledAndHappy · 11/08/2026 11:38

I have a family member who stopped being vegetarian because they were invited out to lunch, the hosts dished up meat and they realised they'd forgotten to tell them they were veggie. They realised it would be really rude & inconsiderate to tell the hosts at that point so just ate it.

I have a friend who invited me over for dinner when she’d just had a baby. She had terrible PND and was very sleep deprived.

I’ve been veggie for 35 years and she knows this. In her sleep-deprived state, she clearly forgot, and she spent ages making moussaka with meat in it.

I ate as much pasta and veg as I could and left as much lamb as I could, and I didn’t say anything. She was in such a bad way and I didn’t want to do anything that made her feel rubbish. (If it had been an allergy, I’d have gone out and bought my own food, but it wasn’t)

Your friends are entitled arseholes, @Wtafdidido

Skodacool · 15/08/2026 22:22

HumberSquid · 11/08/2026 11:39

It's not just about the food is it? Why are you hosting people when you clearly begrudge them the space and the effort (and the saving in cost)?

Yes, of course, they should have told you about their change in diet. But Im not sure its true to say there's no health reason for it. Almost everyone would benefit health-wise by more veg, pulses etc.

That doesn’t alter the fact that OP has made preparations for them without knowing about their change in diet.

bananaobama · 15/08/2026 22:06

Make this their last visit!!!

Allog · 15/08/2026 22:05

Tell them that this is not a vegan household and if they don’t like it they can go elsewhere
