to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

Yes. We are driving to my parents to drop our dogs this evening, staying over and then fly out tomorrow.

Could your parents have the extra dog? Just till she gets down to collect?

palepeony · Yesterday 08:30

What an awful predicament your neighbour has put you in.
Do what have to do and then go and enjoy your holiday x

CantGetBackToSleep · Yesterday 08:31

I won’t just leave the dog in the garden, we will be taking it to the vets if the neighbour doesn’t contact us so the dog will be looked after.

If you're in Hampshire I'll look after it while you're away

Edited

And if you're in Sussex, I will!

The whippet I've been looking after for two weeks is going home today, and I'll miss her.

WhatMe123 · Yesterday 08:31

Put it in her garden and send her a photo of it and report as a stray she is taking the pi$$
slss as I the family member who said she’s too upset to sort it out is a joke someone surely out of the family could take charge I really feel for you op you were only trying to help get abd this is the thanks you get

Onesteptwo2 · Yesterday 08:32

Wow. I get this is hard for her but she's really left you in the lurch.
not stress you need before your holiday!

I have a feeling she wouldn't pay you back so unfortunately rspca. You have given her multiple chances to sort it even calling the kennels for her!

anonymum24 · Yesterday 08:33

No good deed goes unpunished! Awful situation for your neighbour but totally unfair to just abandon their dog and expect you to deal with it. My initial thought was kennels but not if you have to pay upfront, you’ll never see that money again. What an irresponsible dog owner she is, and after you’ve done her a favour too.

likeitshard · Yesterday 08:33

Could you book the dog in the kennels for Friday night and pay (assuming it’s £15-20 ) leaving all contact details of neighbour and then leave her to sort it out. Obviously message her and tell her where the dog is.

No, they are looking forward to having our dogs but don’t want to look after another one.

MidsummerMadness91 · Yesterday 08:34

Don't make kennel payments. You have been very clear you're unable to care for the dog beyond today so why should you foot the bill? You'll never get it back plus she could stay up there for weeks!

As others have said, dog warden is probably your best bet. And I'd said one final clear message telling her that's what you're going to do and you can't predict the outcome if she doesn't contact them in a reasonable time to reclaim him.

Talk about no good deed going unpunished.

The neighbour has to make contact first or they're landed with the dog indefinitely.
Otherwise, this would be the least stressful solution.

Is anyone else invested in this now? I don't mean to make a soap opera of your dilemma OP...I think this is horrendous...but I do want to know how this pans out.

anonymum24 · Yesterday 08:35

Poor dog as well, such upheaval for it and I can imagine being taken to the vets will be frightening for it.

No, they are looking forward to having our dogs but don’t want to look after another one.

How many dogs do you have? Not desperately relevant but I know it could be 2 but I'm picturing like 7 dachshunds

MidsummerMadness91 · Yesterday 08:37

CantGetBackToSleep · Yesterday 07:52

The kennels want at least part payment upfront so I won’t be taking him there unless my neighbour pays them.

I have left another message to say we will be taking him to the vet this morning if she doesn’t pay the kennels or arrange for him to be collected from us.

If I were you, I'd just go to the vets now..she's known your deadline for ages and there's a real risk you get pushed from pillar to post if the vets refuse to take him. So the earlier you start, hopefully the quicker you get a solution and can switch into holiday mode.

PineconeBiscuits · Yesterday 08:37

I would try and ring her phone from a number she doesnt recognise.
I agree with your plan to drop the dog at vets.
I know she's grieving but she is being incredibly selfish and its completely unfair to you.

BlackRowan · Yesterday 08:39

That’s such a bad dog ownership. She wouldn’t forget her children in this situation and just leave them with neighbours so it’s unacceptable that she’s going that

Floatlikeafeather2 · Yesterday 08:39

Pedaling · Yesterday 06:52

For those saying drop the dog at a rescue it doesn't work like that. A rescue won't take the dog today if the op turns up with it.

A rescue should - this is what they're for, dealing with dogs in emergencies, but RSPCA probably won't because this is not what they're for. Kennels won't because they need certification of immunisations, insurance etc, which OP doesn't have.

Maddy70 · Yesterday 08:39

Text owner and the friend and say that as you are on holiday leaving today you have sent dog to xxxxx please get in touch with them as you are no longer replying to me

NCForOneNightOnly · Yesterday 08:39

Obviously you’ll never be doing anything for her ever, ever again. This is an absolute piss take. Ok so she’s got a dreadful situation going on but it’s not your situation. How dare she do this knowing full well you were going away. Are you supposed to cancel your holiday for her?

BurnoutGP · Yesterday 08:40

Absolutely furious on your behalf. I get super stressed before a holiday and everything has to be perfectly organised. This would push me over the edge. The world doesn't stop because her mother died and you dont owe her anything. But now you're left sorting it out. Poor you and poor dog.

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 08:41

Oh FFS, this is why I never/very rarely do anything for anyone. This is bloody ridiculous. I had people do similar things with their fecking children. They would be playing with mine for hours on end, and when the time came for them to go home, the parents were uncontactable. Ended up staying all evening sometimes and even overnight!

Yours is a worse predicament though, coz at least the parents were contactable the same evening or next morning, and it never upended our holiday plans...

@CantGetBackToSleep RSPCA as suggested. I feel so sorry for the dog but you should not be having to take responsibility

RazzleDazz1e · Yesterday 08:42

A friend of mine had a similar situation. She took the dog to the vets and whilst they were a bit reluctant to take the dog, my friend simply left them at the vets and scarpered to her car. The neighbour in question didnt speak to her again, although they were at opposite ends of a housing development so didnt bump into each other much.

BringBackCatsEyes · Yesterday 08:42

KamikazePigeon · Yesterday 08:25

I honestly can't imagine not thinking of my dog, even in these circumstances. You just pull yourself together and do it. The dog depends on you. This is awful.

The neighbour must not be in the “dog is part of the family” camp, because you wouldn’t abandoned a human relative in this way.
Of course she is upset, but at times like this you lean on friends. She must have someone close to her she can ask to take care of this.
Most of us have had to deal with day to day matters in the depths of grief - contact our employer, cancel appointments etc.

Yeah I have a feeling the RSPCA won't take him in, but they might be able to advise the OP.
