to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

Everything is sorted now.

Please may I cheekily request that we try not to fill the thread so I can selfishly hope OP comes back after having a fab holiday and updates us if there's anything worth updating? Hopefully neighbour has had the time by then to take care of herself and understands why OP had to do what she did, the dog is taken care of, not left abandoned or having a bill to pay from kennels... Neighbour hopefully will have the dog back with her and everyone moved on .. Best case scenario from a bad situation. I do feel sorry for the dog and hope this is just a temporary situation it's in. Hope that the neighbour too will be ok, but the thread is about the dog.

But I do really hope we get space left for OP to give a 'panic over nothing, neighbour is back and everything is fine, holiday was bliss,' update, instead of loads of advice and grumpy opinions days after it was resolved already...
Alas, I await to be told everyone is entitled to their opinion whether it's relevant or not and I'm not the thread police... Yarda, yarda, yarda... 😁

I’d leave the dog in her garden with water and phone dog warden to say dog abandoned and owner gone away , according to neighbours. What else can you do. Maybe the neighbours will take pity on the animal.

Or she could do what she did 2 and a half days ago when she wrote her final post!

Considering mumsnet is always banging on about mental health issues, Considering half of mumsnet kids have special needs and their feelings have to be considered by all and sundry, there's some awful, nasty, heartless posts.

Not one single poster has considered that the dogs owner has got issues.

Then the dog may not be safe in her care and should be rehomed anyway. It doesn't change the fact that she has abandoned her dog.

@CantGetBackToSleep
Hi OP, you were amazing to look after the dog and take it to the vets.
Hope you had a great holiday.

Please, please, please update us about the dog, when you get back Xx

BewareTheGurus · 10/08/2026 00:52

Well done. Good moves.

Dlew · 10/08/2026 01:37

Terrible behaviour from your neighbour. Poor poor dog.

this kind of thing is why people don’t want to help eachother anymore and are suspicious of eachother. I’ve lost my mum this year and understand the devastation. But you dont abandon your dog and treat your exceptionally kind neighbours like this.

Firstly, if near enough I'd take it to Battersea dogs home or equivalent, secondly I'd tell them it's being euthanised.

You would tell her that her dog has been put to sleep after her mum has died suddenly?! Wow some of the comments on here are disgusting & frankly shocking! Blocked her number too, just ask your parents to have the dog & let her know that he is safe & being cared for. It’s really unbelievable & unpleasant!!

LaraS2511 · 10/08/2026 03:01

I also bet that the people making vile comments on here have never lost someone close to them?! You literally can not think straight, I had a car accident shortly before my mum’s death, not a bad one but my fault as I wasn’t thinking straight & in times of crisis you may ask something of someone that isn’t usual/out of character.

OP asked her parents but they didn’t want to look after another dog. OP told the neighbour that if she didn’t make contact by a certain time she would be taking the dog to the vet. The neighbour didn’t make contact so therefore she will know the dog is with the vet. The vet will contact her. I don’t see the issue. OP had to go on holiday, which the neighbour knew.

T1Dmama · 10/08/2026 03:23

Hopefully you text and told her which vets you’d dropped her dog at?
bets will send dog to warden after a couple of days. Vets won’t keep hold of a healthy dog, they aren’t boarders!

I'm a bit shocked another neighbour wouldn’t help, even if that just looked like you putting dog back in her house and another neighbour popping in to let it out for poops and to feed it.

I’m also a little shocked she had no one else to ask to help her … or that she hasn’t prioritised her dog…. I would always ensure my pets were ok

Not OPs problem. The neighbour should have made arrangements for her dog. Maybe coming home to a big bill to get her dog back will make her think twice next time before acting like a cunt.

I’m not surprised another neighbour didn’t want to get help knowing they would end up stuck with the dog if the neighbour continued to act irresponsibly. No one volunteers to help out a known piss taker.

Maybe the neighbour had no one else to ask because she had done this sort of thing before and burned all her bridges.

I think it's clear the neighbour had issues, but that's not on op to financially support the dog and pay through the nose not even knowing if the neighbour will repay her. Not on her parents to look after another petsons dog.
I'm surprised none of the good Samaritans here are offering to help with anything.

@CantGetBackToSleep

This. We hope it all worked out well! Although, I suspect the neighbour may still have a bill to come back to! May be more than the kennels would have been too!! But maybe a bit familiar at least, maybe better for the dog.

Even if the dog’s owner has “issues”, knowing this would not have helped the OP. She still had a plane to catch.

But do tell me, which mental health issue causes pet abandonment, and can you get PIP for it?

Did you not read the thread? She did ask her parents, they said no. She did let her know where the dog is before blocking her.

This, although it’s the ever expectation of the guilt trippers on MN “YOU should do something!! take responsibility for their pets/children/work!! You should pay for her dog to be in kennels and all the associated bills or you’re just not
kind!!”
I think some posters even advised she should cancel her holiday!

Tuesdayschild50 · 10/08/2026 07:49

I understand her mum died but when things like this happen some of us still have kids and a house and a life to keep afloat its out of order.
Ring RSPCA or dog rescue local to you so they can take the dog and you get on your holiday with your family id be fuming let her family member know the dog will be with whoever takes him/her and any payments etc is up to them.
Being too upset to deal with this is not an excuse if she loves her dog.
Good luck and enjoy a brillant holiday x

The OP actually arranged kennels. All the owner needed to do was make one phone call. She didn't so the OP didn't have any options left that weren't going to cost £00s other than the vet.

You would be a ‘stupid bitch’ to miss a holiday because a neighbour was acting irresponsibly.

OP looked after the dog for days at short notice.

OP gave the neighbour plenty of opportunities to make a plan for her dog. When the neighbour didn’t take responsibility for her own dog, OP made sure the dog was placed somewhere where he would be cared for with professionals who would contact the neighbour.

Obviously, you have never been devastated by the loss of a loved one. It appears that the death was unexpected, which is why the dog overstayed its welcome.

You can get pip or something for severe depression.

We haven't explored the dog owners marital status or work status. Legally, she is only allowed a few days off work for bereavement. In reality, many people take longer. I have known several people take 2-3 months off because they simply couldn't face returning to work. Their doctors supplied notes for anxiety, stress and depression.

Ask any animal charity about mental health issues and neglect. It is well documented. Recently, the RSPCA and Dogs Trust rescued 250 dogs living in one house. The owner was not prosecuted because they were suffering from mental health issues. This was far from an isolated incident.

Many rough sleepers suffering from mental health issues. Dogs trust runs an outreach project to help look after the dogs belonging to rough sleepers.

Try doing a bit of reading and research. Educate yourself a bit before pontificating on mumsnet.

I have never suggested that OP should miss her holiday.

I have suggested several times that she should have rung around local animal charities for help. If they couldn't help, they would have given constructive advice.

No way would I have asked mumsnet.

She was probably a bit busy packing and getting ready for her holiday and wanted the quickest way of dealing with the situation. Presumably the vets was local so quick and easy. Who has time for ringing multiple animal charities before going on holiday?

We had a stray cat turned up in our garden and tried loads of charities and none of them helped, other than to ask us to keep the cat. After a WEEK, we literally took him to cats protection and left him there with the receptionist shouting ‘you can’t just leave IT here, we don’t have room’.

Hopefully OP is having a lovely holiday and the neighbour has sorted her own dog out.

Another empathetic post. Not.

Neighbour is probably struggling to scrape together the 4k for her mother's funeral. But you are wishing further financial distress on her.

When was the last time you flew to Scotland, had your mother die unexpectedly, arranged her funeral, if she lived in a council house it has to be cleared within 3 weeks, and then flew back to discover that your dog has disappeared?

Yes. The dog owner should have made arrangements. Life is difficult sometimes. Some people just can't cope. Just read the threads on mumsnet to find out how hopeless and indecisive some people are.
