To be amazed at the difference after cutting down on this?

I’ve always had a terrible sweet tooth. For the past 10 days I’ve made a huge effort - only having a few squares of high % dark chocolate each day and the occasional low sugar ice lolly if craving.

I feel like a new person! Far less mood swings, less snappy, calmer in general.

I didn’t think it would make that much difference - I’d always have chocolate and sweets before, and my cravings are almost gone.

Was I naive to think this wouldn’t make any difference from a mood perspective?!

well done OP! I have such a sweet tooth, and need to find a way to do this

I think that sounds really healthy! I eat lots of fruit and also have sweet items at times - I made chocolate muffins with DS yesterday and I definitely had one at dinner!

What seems to make a difference for me is having really sweet food as part of a meal or larger snack, not on its own!

Thank you. I think I'm going to cut myself some slack and do as you suggest - continue having something sweet but only as part of a meal. So if I really want a bit of cake I shall have it as pudding rather than as an add on. I'm resigned to not being able to cut sugar altogether, but I know I'll feel better if I can think 'it's pudding, not a snack...'

I gave up sugar at Christmas. Well, New Year. I didn't eat huge amounts of it (I eat OMAD) but it's impossible to cut out completely because I eat a fair bit of fruit. I don't eat bread, rice or pasta (don't like them) but quite a bit of protein. However, roughly every couple of months I lapse because I am desperate for a bit of cake or a 'proper' pudding.

I think I might just have to accept that total sugar withdrawal is not for me. I don't need to lose weight and my health is generally very good so I'm guessing that a little of what I fancy might be what my body needs.

How's everyone ? Ive passed my week with no chocolate, biscuits, cake etc. Had 2 slices of white bread for a sandwich but that's it. Eating omlette, chicken, fish, sweet potato, salad, veg. Having strawberries as theyre low sugar but im not a big fruit lover anyway

I have also been surprised by this. Was having lots of sugary snacks because I was really tired (baby sleeping badly). I was also really irritable and overwhelmed a lot. Went to my DH's home country for 2 months and the weather and food was all different. Stopped snacking on sweet stuff, but was still having sweet food several times a week. My mood is much better and I accidentally lost 5kg.

My go to snack in the evening is chopped apple, Greek yogurt and granola. Still sweet, but not the massive sugar hit from biscuits or milk chocolate.

ChicGreyZebra · 03/08/2026 23:06

I quit sugar (and carbs - I went totally keto) 18 months ago and have never looked back. I feel amazing and lost 2 stone!

Sarahsduck · 03/08/2026 23:02

I did the same at the beginning of the year and lost 6/7kg (over 10% of my weight). I combined it with 18:6 on 6 days a week (so only eating in a 6 hour window between 12 and 6pm - no breakfast 6 days a week). Plus a daily walk.

Now when i eat sugar I can feel
the crash 30 mins - 1 hour later. It’s bloody awful and puts me off sugar. I actually look at food and think - nope not worth the crash.

I rarely eat bread as I find it makes me very hungry and I’m not keen on pasta. I ate a lot of sweet potato!

I bought several bars of dark chocolate at once. Different % and different origins (Sainsbury’s own). I found it kept it feeling varied and encouraged me to take tiny bites and compare the taste.

mondaytosunday · 03/08/2026 22:47

Depends on the person I guess. I gave up sugar and anything obviously sweet (cakes, biscuits etc) for Lent once and this was before artificial sweeteners other than saccharine which I hate and it made not one bit of difference, and I didn’t lose weight either! I now give up drinking alcohol for Lent and feel no different then either. I’m off alcohol currently as trying to lose weight and it’s better health wise but again not feeling any different (and I was drinking about three bottles a week before).

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/08/2026 22:18

I try to go for mini ice creams to get the refreshment without all of the sugar

Quashsquash · 03/08/2026 22:15

I can usually do without baked goods or other sweets, but ice cream in summer is another problem. I feel like it’s the only way to survive a heatwave. I have to come to grips with that!

InkyOctopuswithLegs · 03/08/2026 21:51

I know for a fact that cutting out sugar makes me feel so much better, I just feel more alive, less aches and pains, sleep better etc.
But im an idiot and keep on going back to it!
I am fine until a holiday or meal out or party happens then im back knee deep in the stuff🤦‍♀️

I've been having peanuts and peanut butter. Unfortunately I am still craving sugar like a crack addict.

BrownWoodenChair · 03/08/2026 16:44

I just cut it out like not even dark chocolate. Ive been snacking on pistachios that helps. After a week I feel fine.

I keep trying to cut out sugar but I'm desperately allergic to dark chocolate (even medium dark will make me sick) and I'd love to find something I could have to take the cravings away! I've got rid of most of it from my diet (although I lapse occasionally when someone shows me cake) so I am in awe of anyone who can do this effectively.

Im meant to be going to an Indian this week. What do you eat thats low sugar at an Indian?

ToysRus56 · 30/07/2026 22:34

I am also really trying with this! I was having something sweet every day for months and months....not something small either, a slab of cake etc. Put on a couple of stone and I hate it. I finnnaaaaally am getting a grip on it I think. Allowing myself something yummy over the weekend but then just dark chocolate in the week...I do hope it gets easier... It took me a while to realize I was completely addicted it's mad,I just didn't realize

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/07/2026 22:00

NotHisLastName · 30/07/2026 12:58

Yes, but if you eat anythingnsugary again you'll realise how addictive it it.

For me, the first few days cutting out are hardest, then it's easy. Until there's birthday cake you you feel obliged to have some, and then boom, you're straight back into the cycle and need to go through detox again!

I’ve had a lot less last week or so as coming off sertraline and it was making it worse. Had some cake today in office and it was nice but I’m not after any more. It really makes you realise how bad it is!

canuckup · 30/07/2026 21:59

I'd say if you don't like chocolate or lollies try dried fruit or cheese in small quantities if craving sugar

Rhymetyme · 30/07/2026 21:57

This is really inspiring! Here's to a no sugar August!

Sharmelbreak · 30/07/2026 21:47

I was the same with fizzy drinks. Diet ones, not full sugar, but when I took a week off them it was like I’d been deflated.

I hate dark chocolate, and I hate sucking lollies too. So this wouldn't work for me.

Good for you if it's worked for you though.

MyDarlingRose · 30/07/2026 14:26

Yes you were naive but it’s not uncommon. Blood sugar levels are monitored and responded to by the nervous and endocrine systems.

The brain uses glucose (sugar) for fuel - When blood sugar drops or spikes, your brain experiences stress signals, changing levels of adrenaline, cortisol, and serotonin (basically hormones and neurotransmitters that regulate the body and mind) which directly affect mood aka irritability, anxiety, low mood, or sudden emotional swings.

The body is all interconnected and this includes the mind and how we think and feel. All of it is fuelled by messages within the body, hormones, neurotransmitters, receptors, agonists, surges and deficits. Its why exercise, good diet and good habits, good sleep can all interact with mental health in a very real and physical way. It’s why B12 or iron deficiency (just 2 examples) can lead to anxiety or if really low cognitive decline. People seem to think the mood and mind is some isolated sphere within and separate from our biology but it’s all interwoven.

I stopped eating sugar 2 weeks ago. I don’t feel any different. maybe I’m doing it wrong🤣
