Weight loss has stalled

downloadtoad · 26/06/2026 08:21

I’m 5.4ft and weigh 11stone, I have lost 8 pounds recently over the last couple of months or so by being in a calorie deficit, I would say my body has got used to this as I can no comfortably go without snacking and just eat main meals.
For example yesterday I ate -
piece of toast and a protein shake
Greek yogurt with flax seed and blueberries
for lunch I had a tuna salad
dinner was actually a bbq, I usually let myself have carbs etc for tea.
I’ll usually have another protein shake in the afternoon.

I haven’t been calorie tracking for a while now but I was trying to initially stay under 1500 but I found it miserable, so I’d say it’s around 1800 calories, some days less.

What am I doing wrong ? You would think the weight should be falling off but it’s definitely stalled.

If relevant I do have pcos and bloat terribly from carbs, even the good ones. I also take metformin for insulin resistance due to the pcos.

Count calories and drop down to 1500, swap a couple of the Pilates sessions for weight training. If you can afford it you could swap the metformin for weight loss meds.

YABU not topost this on the weight loss boards.

About 3 weeks

Your small deficit won’t necessarily lead to weight loss in 3 weeks, plateaus are common after a couple of months of loss (they can last up to 5-6 weeks), all the above is more likely as you near the healthy weight range.

If you want more dramatic results, you need a more dramatic deficit. And to be patient around natural plateaus.

RoseField1 · 27/06/2026 12:21

downloadtoad · 27/06/2026 11:34

Probably about 3 weeks

But your deficit will only lead to under 0.5lb a week loss anyway even if you stick to it perfectly? So you aren't stalled at all?

Backedoffhackedoff · 27/06/2026 12:13

The glucose goddess is full of shite- just a charlatan

the protein shakes are fine- I am
boggled as to why you’d swap them for 2 hard boiled eggs if you like them and they work for you.

you probably do need a more aggressive deficit to lose steadily, but don’t forget you will lose at 200 deficit, just more slowly. You might’ve stalled and will know slowly shift - it might be more like 1lb a month rather than a week. But it’s a marathon not a sprint, and if you want to keep it off take the time.

Hoops123 · 27/06/2026 12:08

People amaze me with this sort of question, the answer is that you are eating too much (inc shakes as contains calories). Reduce your intake a lot and you will lose weight, it’s simple science

RoseField1 · 27/06/2026 10:53

It will work if you track, but with such a small deficit you have a tiny margin for error. How long have you been stuck for?

About 3 weeks

Sorry I should’ve made it clear on my op, I initially started doing 1500 but it was hard, made me miserable ! So I thought maybe if I do a smaller deficit, and it did work, but now the scales seem to have stopped going down, I’m stuck between 10.13 and 11 stone

With a TDEE of 2000 calories, and a deficit of 200 calories a day, you’re going to be losing less than 2lb a month.

TDEE is only an estimated snapshot, as is a calorie goal in a day. It will fluctuate and see this rate become even slower.

I do suspect you’re eating too much unfortunately.

Where did you get the figure of 1800 to lose? You could theoretically lose on 1800 if you tracked very strictly but it would be really slow. If you aim for 1500 and track you should lose 1lb a week.

At 11 stone and 5 foot 4 you're not far off being in the healthy weight category at all, it could just be that your body is happy being just a bit overweight. But as others said you need to drop your calories. I'm the same height and have gone from 14 stone 5 to 12 stone 3 by calorie counting since Christmas. I would probably put weight on if I ate 1800 calories. I've still got around a stone and a half to lose and I've also stalled a little bit because I've become more lax over the past few weeks. I really need to crack on with it again.

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/06/2026 09:23

Hang on, when you say ‘stalled’ what do you mean? A stall would be staying the same for about 4 weeks. If you are looking at shorter term data than that then it could be:

  • hormonal
  • water retention caused by - heat, exercise
  • reduced sleep (who can sleep in this bloody heat)
  • increased stress

Ll of these things change how your body breaks down fat, processes and removes water and as such impact what the scales say.

i always go up the week before my period, then the day that starts the scales go down again. If I have a heavy exercise day that makes my muscles ache then I know the scales will go up for the 3 days after because your body uses water to heal the muscles so it hoards it. If I’m not getting sleep and loads of water then I won’t lose weight.

You’re eating the wrong things/too many calories. Do you need the slice of toast (what are you putting on it?) plus the protein shake and the Greek yogurt for breakfast? Plus the protein shake in the afternoon?
You should eat meals that mean you are full so don’t need to snack.

Try making overnight oats for breakfast with Greek yogurt, oats, a scoop of protein powder and fruit to keep you full. Lunch could be something with a small amount of carbs to keep you full (sweet potato is a good choice). Snack on fruit etc.

Re exercise, Pilates is not going to help you lose weight. Weight training is the best for this. I started 2.5 years ago and it’s been revolutionary for me.

WorriedAnxiousAndStressed · 27/06/2026 08:32

@downloadtoadim the same height and also have pcos/pmos.
i do have to take my calorie intake quite low (yes miserable), but if you can, try and add slow full body weighted exercises (at least 3 times a week). With insulin resistance, I’ve also found it’s so important to walk for at least 20 mins after each meal. This isn’t always possible, but it has meant purchasing a walking pad and trying to walk after breakfast and dinner at least.
I’ve gone from 12 stone to 9; but when I stop watching what I eat unfortunately I allow myself to over indulge in high sugar carbs foods, and end up back up to 10 stone.
i also started berberine (am taking a break from it at the moment), and it really helped reduce cravings. From my understanding you cannot continue to take it over long periods of time so currently stopped for a month and then will restart. Another supplement that tends to really help is myo inositol. (Apologies if all of this has been mentioned before i haven’t read all the replies).

Carbs are pretty essential if you’re active. You can’t convert fat to glucose at a fast enough rate when exercising hard for a significant time. I tried it and failed. If you’re inactive or do low intensity exercise that’s different but to say anyone saying the importance of carbs is ignorant or lying is unfair and potentially harmful,

Respectfully, I disagree. Just like you, I have my own n = 1 scenario for myself who is very active and don’t eat carbs. My wife also just ran a marathon on zero carbs. There’s so many people out there on zero carbs thriving and very active.

If what you’re saying is true then humans would never have survived in Northern Europe through the winter when there’s zero carbs. Or they would never have survived a prolonged fast.

Yes. If I don't eat carbs I don't have the energy to exercise and my brain doesn't function as well.

Sparklybat · 27/06/2026 08:09

darksideofthetoon · 26/06/2026 09:27

No, so many people thrive without them. The body makes all the glucose it needs from fat via gluconeogenesis. Think about an egg that literally gives rise to a new life - all fat and protein. Anyone telling you that carbs are essential is lying or ignorant. Equally, the so called ‘good carbs’ rocket blood sugar. It’s been well demonstrated that wholewheat bread raises blood sugar as much as a mars bar or more. Oats, disaster for blood sugar.

Regarding your blood sugar medication, it is designed on the assumption that you’re too stupid or lazy to make the changes your body needs. It assumes you will carry on eating plenty of carbs. Docs trained that T2 diabetes is permanent - wrong! That lie only benefits big pharma.

If you do proceed with a low / no carb diet, please monitor your blood sugar levels thoroughly. You may be surprised how quickly you can come off metformin. But if you stay on it at the same dose and with low carbs, there is the risk of hypoglycaemia.Talk to your doctor but don’t be surprised if they know nothing about a low carb diet or even try to discourage you.

Lots of people recommending nuts which are very high in calories, there was a thread on here not too long ago about a woman who ate copious amounts of meat, cheese and nuts and couldn’t understand why she was gaining so much weight and there was hundreds of posters telling her no wonder she’s that size if she’s eating cheese and nuts thinking she’s eating a healthy snack.
Carbs aren’t the enemy only refined carbs but people hear the word carb and put a potato in the same box as a cake or a cookie.
Potato, rice or pasta are normal food, a spaghetti’s bolognaise or lasagne is a normal dinner, curry with rice or a jacket potato with healthy filling is perfectly healthy for a standard meal, a wrap, sandwich or some toast is all fine I eat these things daily and I am 7 stone at 5’2 in my 40s what I don’t eat is cakes, crisps, cookies, sugary cereal, sweets, chocolate, beer and pudding etc but there’s nothing wrong with normal food, it’s sugar and processed food that’s the problem refined carbs not all carbs.
My own mother is 63 and I don’t know her weight but she’s also a size 4-6 but she doesn’t eat meat so swaps that for chickpeas or beans in dishes, I’m not saying metabolism is one size fits all but you need a varied and healthy diet because cutting out entire foods groups will cause nutrient deficiencies, hair loss and fatigue.
Fruit is healthy and fine to eat but contains fructose, a natural sugar which while comes under the name sugar should not be confused with refined sugar found in processed junk food that’s not healthy but because it’s called sugar it’s also put in the same box as a cake or cookie.

The main reason people eat rubbish is because processed food is pumped full of addictive chemicals that cause you to want more even though you’re not hungry that’s the reason you find them so moorish, you can’t just have one biscuit or one crisp but how many times can you not stop at one slice of cucumber so keep going back for more even though you’re not hungry? None because there’s no chemicals in it luring you back but please don’t cut out healthy food groups because they share a name with processed food.
Just not refined sugar or refined carbs, call it processed food to avoid the correlation.

Have you calculated your TDEE? At 5ft 4, unless you’re very active, I don’t think the weight would be falling off. Plus it’s easy to underestimate how many calories you’re consuming unless you’re weighing and tracking everything.

Thanks for all the great replies, it’s really helpful as I’m pretty new to all this but I am determined to lose the excess weight, I just don’t want to be miserable and hungry all the time. I do eat tins of tuna and they help fill the gap, it just gets a bit boring! And I have turned myself off boiled eggs as I ate way too many of them 😆

HRT for the future health benefits alone.

Cheap protein can tins be tins of tuna, various beans & bags dried red lentils and Oats. The latter three can all be used to bulk out mince dishes too.

I get too many sudeeffects from meds.

May have to eat tuna and mince yes.
