Transgender niece

My niece lives in another country and I’ve just heard that she is becoming a he. She has changed her name, is taking hormone medication and now has facial hair. She is a transgender boy. However she sees herself as a boy. AIBU to think she will never be a biological boy and to refer to her as a transgender boy? I realise this could be an emotive topic.

You're not that important, basic manners cost nothing.

I'm not quite sure how people like this would operate if they met a trans person since it's obvious not many have.

Do you realise how rude and intentionally hurtful you would come across to everyone else? People like this, I feel, are full of online bluster, but are terrified to show who they really are in public.

I have experienced a very similar situation to the OP.

My cousin's child transitioned and started taking T. She has since detransitioned as she realised (too late) that her problems were not about being 'born in the wrong body' and 'living as a man' did nothing to alleviate them.

She has significant ongoing health issues from her time taking T. The OP is absolutely right to be concerned about that.

I fully appreciate that I am not that important. But facts, truth, scientific reality, women's rights, children's safeguarding all are. It is certainly not 'manners' to undermine these crucial things. The lies may be kindly meant, but they help no one. Least of all the poor child in question.

Oh give my head a holiday you drama queen. It's a silly meme. Take your feigned outrage and clutch your pearls elsewhere. Honestly 🫠

Can't be, can it? Everyone knows that trans people and their supporters are peaceful people who would never assault anyone, right?

Maria MacLachan will attest to that. In court Grin Tara whatshisnane was such a peaceable chap.

I mean if we’re going to talk about made up scenarios… I’ll go first - men can become women.

Oh, threats of violence. How original.

Also, trans people in the UK have all the rights they need already.

Well, no, you can't. That's the point.

How is this any different than the things people used to say about gays? You also sound completely insane.

The trans movement has more in common with a religious cult than with the gay rights movement

Unlike the gay rights movent, the trans movement:

  • Is based not on a truth (that there is nothing wrong with being romantically/sexually attracted to someone of the same sex) but on a lie (that it is possible to change sex and/or that an ineffable 'gender identity' should be used to define whether someone is a man or a woman, rather than their biological sex)
  • is not claiming rights which don't affect other people, but is demanding concessions (men entering women's spaces, children having medical treatments) which have consequences for others
  • is not using peaceful demonstrations but is issuing rape and death threats
  • is not gaining sympathy with the general population over time, but on the contrary is losing sympathy. YouGov polls show that agreement with the main aims of the trans movement (eg men being allowed to use women's spaces) has fallen in the UK over the last decade

Like a religious cult, the trans ideology:

  • demands its adherents accept impossible beliefs (that it is possible to change sex, that what makes someone a woman or a man is their 'inner essence' rather than their objective biological sex)
  • will not allow any discussion of its beliefs
  • encourages its adherents to reject their own friends and family if their friends and family question the ideology
  • is preying on the most vulnerable in society (children, especially autistic children, those who have a history of trauma or sexual abuse, and those who have grown up in the care system)
  • rejects the testimony of those adherents who escape (de-transitioners)

So yeah, many of us are concerned about this issue. It's not because we're all Nazis/bigots/tiny-minded ladies who can't mind their own business. We're concerned both for the vulnerable children and young people who believe it and for the women who are being attacked for trying to defend scientific truth, freedom of expression, and women's rights to safety and fair treatment. I hope any undecided lurkers who read this can see that our concerns are sincere. I think the uncaring attitude of many of the trans rights activist posters speaks for itself

BreadandButterscotch · 21/06/2026 14:22

I’d absolutely love one of the batshit posters on here to define what they think a woman is. Because to define a woman, unless you are going to spout for a load of outdated gender stereotypes, you will have to acknowledge that a trans identifying biological male cannot possibly be a woman. “Trans women are women” means absolutely nothing in reality if you cannot define what a woman is. If you go for the stereotypes, it makes you the regressive ones, not the rest of us.

Why do you care so much? Does it really affect you either way?

Of course she care about her niece and her interactions with her. What a bizarre comment

Leafstamp · 21/06/2026 13:42

AlmostAJillSandwich · 21/06/2026 01:56

My soon to be 16 year old cousin, who i haven't seen since they were 5, is transgender. They aren't hurting anyone, live and let live.

I disagree. Anyone who is perpetuating the this unevidenced and contested belief system is contributing to reinforcing regressive stereotypes. Not to mention various off shoots related to women’s right, child safeguarding and free speech.

Wadsworthy · 21/06/2026 08:01

shuggles · 20/06/2026 20:40

@Wadsworthy Gender = historically and culturally specific and changeable set of ideas about how male and female humans should behave. Often used to oppress women and constrain their education, activities, voice etc etc because women are the reproductive half of the species.

There are no societal expectations of how men or women should behave. If you didn't do something because you're a woman, that's because you chose not to do that, not because of "society," whoever that is.

So when women are punished more severely than men for certain crimes?

So when women are raped & not believed?

So when girls/women are told what they wear "caused" a crime against them?

So - rape gangs? Young girls raped, but prosecuted them selves when they tried to get help?

I could go on ...

MyBlueCritic · 21/06/2026 01:38

TheKeatingFive · 20/06/2026 09:44

But that's the key issue isn't it.

Simple name change, no problem.

But the expectation, if you are to 'affirm' is that you go along with the pretence that you see them as the other sex. You can try to side step that by not directly referring to it/avoiding pronouns, but the OP will need to be constantly on the alert to keep her actual view under wraps.

You're not that important, basic manners cost nothing.

Surely conversion therapy applies more to people trying to help people change their gender, rather than supporting them to embrace who they actually are? (A biological male or female). That is very different to the concept of conversion therapy as it is applies to trying to convert gay people, because gay people are actually gay!

No. Don't be absurd.

I'm talking about clothes. I am absolutely clear that there is no such thing as "male-coded clothing." That does not exist.

Hum, no, we were talking about gender.
