Greenery on things where it doesnt belong

Ordered baked beans on toast (we'll come back to that) today.

Came with a clump of greenery on top. Salad garni.

What person in their right mind does this?

And OF COURSE it was bloody sourdough. Because NO other bread exists these days. And it was not toasted. It was barely within sight of the toaster I reckon

So it turns up with its green clump and then, to make matters much worse, it came with some butter pats but THE BEANS WERE ALREADY ON THE UNTOASTED TOAST.

So I scraped off my beans to try to spread the butter but of course this was a wasted effort because the butter wouldnt adhere to the untoasted toast due to the bean juice so I ended up just smearing it around while it stuck to my knife.

Anyway back to the greenery. I cant tell you how many bits of rocket have gone flying down the road before when served atop something, because of course a bit of wind will pick up salad and send it flying into the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian.

And dont get me started on bloody pea shoots.

YANBU - Garnishing perfectly adequate meals with frilly extras is a performative nonsense to make something out of nothing

YABU - I really like bits of salad on top of a full English and you're only posting this because your OH has the football on anyway and you're bored.

YES to whoever mentioned Brioche.

I shop in Tesco and Sainsbury mainly, sometimes Waitrose for special.

There is no longer an option to buy a burger bun that isn't brioche. What the fuck is that about? Literally, not a single pack of burger buns that aren't essentially cakes.

Tesco seeded burger buns - old school, cheap white ones :-)

Only a Brit would complain that they were served sourdough aka real bread

Brits are perfectly happy with real bread. Give us a slice off a freshly baked farmhouse loaf, or fresh baked warm rolls, and we'll be happy as anything.

By no stretch of the imagination is sourdough real bread.

Yes I mean there was a thread about this recently and it established that there are people in the world, PP is probably one of them, that literally didnt know that there are all sorts of fresh baked bread that ISNT sourdough with its horrible sour flavour.

They dont know this!

They've never heard of a split tin, bloomer, cottage loaf, morning roll, soda bread, milk roll (which is a loaf, easy mistake to make for those who dont know the world of bread), plenty of others

Poor old PP.

As a kid, I would eat a bit of untoasted squidgy white with a thick layer of butter and hot beans, folded into a sloppy sandwich. With a cup of sugary builders. I miss my youth.

Pushmepullu · 17/06/2026 23:37

I don’t like beans on toast.

OtherS · 17/06/2026 23:35

Very unreasonable for ordering beans on toast. Not only are baked beans revolting, but aren't they like 4p? And in a can? Why would you pay someone to open a 4p can of yuckiness and put it on bread?! Just do it yourself - and save breakfasts out for stuff no sane person would ever do for themselves, like eggs benedict.

Plus pea shoots are fab.

But other random bits of stringy green crap all over your dinner is definitely wrong. Had fish and chips the other week with a couple of half dead leaves dumped on top. Why?! I barely eat the bloody peas. Either give me a proper side salad, or leave me to gorge on the good stuff without feeling guilty I'm not going to be getting anywhere near my five a day today.

Happyjoe · 17/06/2026 23:18

On top of beans on toast though?!

Well you can just lift it off and sort of scrape the bean juice off and then all is ok I think? Pea shoots, even rocket - the exception being in the case of dill, as I say, which will infect everything it touches with evil aniseed hideousness - it should probably lay be on some sort of proscribed substance list tbh - I feel quite strongly about this

JohnBullshit · 17/06/2026 23:33

I don't mind the garnish, and I prefer my beans on toast without butter. Also, sourdough holds the beans better than your standard white sliced. All the same, YANBU, not even a tiny bit, because butter has a place and poking it underneath the beans is not it. I expect my own preference to be the outlier, not the norm. Also, barely toasted bread is not acceptable under any circumstances.

JillyComeLately · 17/06/2026 23:30

Even if YABU I would vote YANBU for the simple reason your opening post made me laugh.😁

Fgfgfg · 17/06/2026 23:30

I love sourdough toast but it has no place near beans.

Right. Twice a week I treat myself to beans on toast at work. You are presented with two pieces of toast in an environmentally friendly takeaway box. The bottom piece of toast is covered in beans and soaks up the lovely bean juice and brown sauce combo. The other piece of toast is cut in half and artfully arranged either side of the main event thereby giving you the best of both worlds; soggy beany toast and crispy toast. Last week I was presented with beans in a box and two pieces of toast in a bag. What am I meant to do with that? By the time I got back to my office the toast had gone cold and sweaty. I was so disappointed.

You should have been grateful that the sourdough wasn't toasted, OP, if it had been it would have torn the top of your mouth to ribbons.

YABU - nice bit of salad, some herbs, lovely. Unless of course it’s DILL which is an abomination - but assuming you are not in Scandinavia or eastern Europe hopefully you are still safe from that, praise be

On top of beans on toast though?!

How can you hate fresh herbs?

No wonder colorectal cancers are on the rise.

I don't suppose they make much of a difference tbh. I prefer herbs to be cooked as part of the dish, than random ones sprinkled on top that doesn't help the flavour.

Retunue · 17/06/2026 23:15

I remember that in Magaluf in the early 2000s, everything came with a small salad. Pie, chips and gravy…. with salad. Full English breakfast…. with salad.

Kalanthe · 17/06/2026 23:11

Beans on toast are abomination in itself, beans with spoonfuls of sugar in the sauce (vom - who puts sugar in beans), served on bread?? What kind of twisted mind came up with this „dish”, probably the same one who first put chips in between two bread slices and called it a sandwich

Only a Brit would complain that they were served sourdough aka real bread, not that gooey spongy chemical-filled monstrosity sold labelled as bread. Bread only needs water, flour and salt (sourdough) or added yeast (if not sourdough). Read the ingredient list on the thing you call bread, it’s like calling McDonald’s a healthy homemade meal.

My other half will only eat white, processed shit bread with no flavour, texture or anything nice at all.

I presume you're from the USA? My American friend finds it very strange that we eat beans on toast whereas they're usually used at a BBQ or something as a side. Full English brekkie freaked her out when she saw the beans, but not as much as mushy peas.

But, don't knock a chip butty. Home made chips, has to be King Edward potatoes, between two bits of bread is sometimes just what the soul needs.

nomas · 17/06/2026 23:14

IwanttoWFH · 17/06/2026 21:51

You are not being unreasonable. As someone who hates the majority of fresh/raw herbs (coriander being the main culprit) there are an alarming amount of eateries who sprinkle herbs all over everything, too. Most unnecessary (especially when it isn’t mentioned on the menu).

I don’t have any beef with the greenery but the rest of your post is just shambolic.

the toast needs to be toasted.
butter goes on the toast
beans last.

I’d have sent the fucker back

CaesarAugusta · 17/06/2026 23:10

I've thought of starting a similar thread from time to time. You are SOOOO not unreasonable. Round where I am, the restaurants seem to have an obsession with serving bloody rocket with a full English breakfast. Who the hell wants wilted tasteless rocket leaves on their fried egg and bacon? Why don't they just leave it out and cut the price down?

SnowFrogJelly · 17/06/2026 23:10

YABU for not making your own beans on toast!

lazyarse123 · 17/06/2026 23:09

Yanbu although I don't mind sourdough. We had a full English in a very nice cafe but it had spinach on it. I would never eat that anyway never mind with bacon. Wanky pretentious nonsense. It was also the first place I'd been in that had a charity donation thing on the card machine and I didn't have my glasses on and had to ask what it said. Luckily I'm not afraid to say no.

Lilyhatesjaz · 17/06/2026 23:09

It's coriander that annoys me, I don't want to eat a fried egg that tastes like soap.

Nonnim · 17/06/2026 23:09

I love sourdough bread and sourdough toast, but the thing with the butter is a pure insult. Would you like your toast buttered, well you CANT have that, hahahahahahahaha.

Taking a line through a thread from the other day, I think the solution is for cafes to ask whether you would like the wanky version. No shade - some people love pea shoots - and I speak as someone who enjoys her sourdough baguette with unsalted French butter and hand fried salted potato crisps…
