Please help stop this disgraceful practice.

Greenery on things where it doesnt belong

Ordered baked beans on toast (we'll come back to that) today.

Came with a clump of greenery on top. Salad garni.

What person in their right mind does this?

And OF COURSE it was bloody sourdough. Because NO other bread exists these days. And it was not toasted. It was barely within sight of the toaster I reckon

So it turns up with its green clump and then, to make matters much worse, it came with some butter pats but THE BEANS WERE ALREADY ON THE UNTOASTED TOAST.

So I scraped off my beans to try to spread the butter but of course this was a wasted effort because the butter wouldnt adhere to the untoasted toast due to the bean juice so I ended up just smearing it around while it stuck to my knife.

Anyway back to the greenery. I cant tell you how many bits of rocket have gone flying down the road before when served atop something, because of course a bit of wind will pick up salad and send it flying into the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian.

And dont get me started on bloody pea shoots.

YANBU - Garnishing perfectly adequate meals with frilly extras is a performative nonsense to make something out of nothing

YABU - I really like bits of salad on top of a full English and you're only posting this because your OH has the football on anyway and you're bored.

how about when they serve your dinner on a piece of slate or a chopping board.

I like sourdough and the greenery doesn't bother me unless its coriander. 😳

But beans on untoasted bread? Disgusting and worse than that, un-British!

You need to go on a Calmac ferry and have their magnificent breakfast. Proper toast, not sourdough, no greenery. Beans on the plate with everything else, not in a fiddly wee pot.

I thought it was just me with the Brioche buns. It's everywhere now. What happened to the good old white bap?

Agree 100000000% - I HATE sourdough. Pretty much anywhere I go these days only has that as its bread offering on the menu. Pisses me off.

When I was a child I liked plain food, not necessarily beige food, but I didn't like stuff touching or mixed up.
We went out for dinner and they had smoked salmon on the starter menu...great, my favourite. My mum asked if it came with anything and if we could please have it without any dressing, salad, etc. and we were told that was no problem. They obviously decided it looked a bit sad because they'd sprinkled a handful of very finely chopped parsley over the whole plate. Being young and already embarrassed that one question had been asked on my behalf I point blank refused to let my mum send it back and spent 20 minutes picking of every single piece of parsley before I ate anything.

I once had a pub meal of spiced baked beans which was basically overcooked Heinz beans with sultanas garlic and curry powder mixed in. Was rather nice.

As a bare minimum, beans on toast should involve toast. So you are nbu. I would have been crosser about that than the greenery, although that would also have been unwelcome.

There used to be a cafe near me where there were two distinct options on the menu and the staff were very clear on the fact that they were entirely different meals

Beans on toast with grated cheese on top

or

Grilled Cheese on toast with beans on top

Sadly the establishment has been modernised and is now more likely to offer green garnish than such nuanced options (they also took down the nostaligic photo wall of pictures of generations of climbers 😥).

You know where you stand with a place like that.

Shame about their demise.

Yep. She was complaining because they were home-made and not out of a tin, so too spicy and her kid wouldn't eat them. You couldn't make it up. Except she probably did.

YANBU. Loads of things are garnished with coriander, I cant stand the bloody stuff, it tastes like disinfectant ( I know it's genetic). I try my best to pick as much out as is possible but can still taste where it has infected the rest of the food.

I mean, it's a fair point, though, perhaps venues could cater for those who prefer beans adjacent to toast by stating on the menu that it's an option. Mind you, the kind of places that eff around putting green stuff on the beans would probably charge an extra fiver for the privilege of an alternative beans placement.

Greenery on beans on toast is a bloody abomination. I only like beans on toast when the toast is very crispy and buttered when cold and the beans are not actually on the toast as they make it soggy. I appreciate this is non standard but garnish is definitely very wrong.

Herbs on baked beans is just wrong but I bloody hate sourdough bread as well. Overly chewy crust with rock hard inner when toasted and the sourness is just weird. Definitely the emperor's new clothes.

@likelysuspect agree with you. I don't mind the garnish as such but nobody is eating it for the health benefits, it's just pretentious.
Sourdough meanwhile, ugh, I hate the stuff. Impossible to cut, impossible to chew, hard and sticky. I just want a normal slice of bread.

Didn't see the thread but I totally agree. I hate chilli/spice and tikka masala is my limit. So common nowadays for unmentioned chilli to be either in a dish or garnishing it. Personally I think it's lazy cooking, ah can't be bothered to make something tasty, just lob a bit of salt and chilli in and charge customers a fortune.

YABU OP, but only because I now really want beans on toast, and I don't have any lactose free butter because my local supermarket doesn't stock it any more, I've run out of lactojoy tablets and I can't get to the next nearest supermarket (45 minutes away) until Friday.

But no, greens (as much as I like pea shoots) do not belong on beans on toast.
