Greenery on things where it doesnt belong

Ordered baked beans on toast (we'll come back to that) today.

Came with a clump of greenery on top. Salad garni.

What person in their right mind does this?

And OF COURSE it was bloody sourdough. Because NO other bread exists these days. And it was not toasted. It was barely within sight of the toaster I reckon

So it turns up with its green clump and then, to make matters much worse, it came with some butter pats but THE BEANS WERE ALREADY ON THE UNTOASTED TOAST.

So I scraped off my beans to try to spread the butter but of course this was a wasted effort because the butter wouldnt adhere to the untoasted toast due to the bean juice so I ended up just smearing it around while it stuck to my knife.

Anyway back to the greenery. I cant tell you how many bits of rocket have gone flying down the road before when served atop something, because of course a bit of wind will pick up salad and send it flying into the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian.

And dont get me started on bloody pea shoots.

#endgreeneryoverload

YANBU - Garnishing perfectly adequate meals with frilly extras is a performative nonsense to make something out of nothing

YABU - I really like bits of salad on top of a full English and you're only posting this because your OH has the football on anyway and you're bored.

Do you remember some years back when the trend was for your food to be served on literally anything but an actual plate?

Greenery is fine but put it on the side ffs.

Jay Raynor wrote an excoriating review if a place in Yorkshire that had the temerity to serve his bread rolls in a flat cap. It was a work of vitriolic genius.

Leavesandthings · 17/06/2026 23:08

I was once confused and appalled because I was served a jacket potato with beans and cheese where the cheese was invisible, under the beans!

I was like, "oh, I ordered beans and cheese"

And she replied, "the cheese is under the beans"

!!!!!???????!!!!!!!???????!!!!!

Strawberryteabag · 17/06/2026 23:07

It wasn't beans on toast it was "Haricot beans in a rich tomato sauce, served on fresh lightly toasted sourdough bread with a garnish of rocket and real dairy butter" they can make it £10 then even if it was shit 😉

This genuinely has to be my thread of the year and sourdough needs to go in room 101

Along with brioche rolls. Especially with a burger bleugh.

I don’t mind a bit of green stuff but I do find edible flowers a bit weird.

Oh, those I do like. I've always loved flower flavours though.

DH once went to a local place, tarte au citron avec garnish of cress. Cress! It's not an egg sandwich.

YANBU op. Baked beans are an abomination with or without unnecessary greenery - disgusting revolting balls of mush but I agree with you on mumsnetting due to football boredom.

You are my kind of person. Baked beans 🤮 are the fruit of the Devil. The Devil, I tell you.

OrsolaRosso · 17/06/2026 23:00

My personal pet hate is when you order a jacket potato, and they ask if you want butter. To which you, of course, say yes. Then it arrives, already filled with the coronation chicken or tuna and sweet corn or whatever, and the butter is still in the fiddly packet on the side. No way to put it on to the potato under the filling. Aaargh!

managingexpectations · 17/06/2026 22:59

Baked bean should be on thick white bread (warburtons toastie ideally) toasted until golden and slathered in butter. No green shit required! And definitely no spicy or altered beans!
i actually fancy beans on toast right now but i have neither bread nor beans!

Fiddly wee pots are super annoying.

how about when they serve your dinner on a piece of slate or a chopping board.

I mentioned in a post that there's a campaign against that. Places still bloody do it, though. And drinks in a jam jar can get in the sea as well.
Oh, and I can deconstruct my own cheesecake, I don't need to pay a fortune for someone else to present it to me looking like it's been made out of other diner's leftovers.

I did indeed. But I was really sad about those eggs, they could have been so perfect ....

YANBU @likelysuspect , green garnish on beans is just so wrong. And serving soggy, untoasted, unbuttered sourdough instead of proper, toasted white bread with butter...the place should be shut down.

Its true isnt it. I should phone environmental health or something.

We could start a campaign, like the one there was for proper plates instead of bits of roof slate and chopping boards. It's clear a movement against this sort of MasterChef wankery is needed.

It should be zero tolerance.

Love a bit of token greenery but YANBU about the butter or the toasting.

I hate garnish on anything. And restrants garnish everything. I wouldn't have butter on the toast if im having beans. But yeah it was stupid to do that. I hate it when I ask for jacket potato with beans and cheese. And they put cheese on first 😭

Never ever order M&S brunch of poached eggs on toast. Self assembly required - two rock hard slices of toasted sourdough, two pats of butter, and two poached eggs, beautifully shaped, runny in middle, lukewarm on arrival. By the time I'd buttered the toast and coaxed the eggs on board, eggs were cold. I was too hungry and too British to complain.

Beans on untoasted bread is a total abomination. Buttering nicely toasted bread and then putting the beans on top is one of life's greatest pleasures.
I like to order scrambled eggs, beans and toast when out for brunch and I absolutely hate it when the eggs are watery and the toast gets soggy before I get to butter it.

Agree.

Beans by toast, beans near toast, beans next to toast- yes.

Beans on Toast- no.
