I read this quote and it encapsulates exactly how I feel

'I never thought I'd see the day when the Right became the cool ones giving the finger to the establishment, and the Left became the snivelling self-righteous ones going around shaming everybody'

AIBU to think this is what many people think these days? We didn't leave the left, the left left us.

*the quote is from John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten. He's deliberately provocative in lots of ways, but he meant this one. I fully expect some people to come on the thread to tell us all how he's a horror and said he likes Donald Trump. That would be them missing the point.. but.. Let Them..

Nigel Farage is part of the establishment and has always been so. It’s why he has so much media support. It’s beyond me why working class people think a privately educated former banker has their best interests at heart.

Look at Farage’s voting record he always votes against strengthening worker rights. He’s complained that the minimum wage is too high for youngsters. The cognitive dissonance from
the right is astounding.

I can’t see your face but I assume you typed that with a straight one.

Medical tourism is a rounding error compared to the damage done by austerity and understaffing. The NHS wasn’t broken by migrants, it was broken by political choices.

And we hear the same thing every single time workers get more rights minimum wage, sick pay, maternity leave, weekends. Apparently it’ll destroy the economy. Funny how it never does. Meanwhile parties like Reform openly talk about deregulation and rolling back employment protections, so let’s not pretend the modern right is passionately pro-worker.

As for private schools, nobody’s stopping people using them. But pretending they don’t massively boost access to elite jobs and connections is nonsense. That’s not “envy”, it’s just reality.

Thanks for proving that you are ideologically driven. For a minute, I thought you might be rational.

You clearly aren’t keeping up with the consequences of leftist economic policy currently. On unemployment, inflation, taxation, economic growth, investment. If you did, you wouldn’t regurgitate tired soundbites and engage in outcomes driven debate.

punkhairbrush · 09/05/2026 19:43

Far left and far right are as bad as each other! Sadly the Tory party fucked up so badly many have got such extreme views now! But to be honest I’d vote Tory over reform or greens any day!

Northermcharn · 09/05/2026 19:42

ProudCat · 09/05/2026 19:21

You couldn't make it up could you? He's also the guy that called you 'pretty vacant' at the same time as telling you that you should get rid of the monarchy.

And you wonder why people think the Reform lot are thick.

Oh you still just don't get it do you?

I'll help you one last time - many people used to be Left. They voted for Labour. I was one of those people. Since the left wing side of politics morphed into an unrecognisable judgmental horror show, and indeed moved so far left they're the old right. It's the point of the quote really - but you've missed it in your rush to judge. Shocker.

Btw - who is Reform?

Annnnnd straight to the immigration rhetoric....I should have put a bet on it.

This is such an odd thing to post given what I posted.

But I guess if you're only argument is "you stupid and racist" then it's not that surprising.

OneTealShaker · 09/05/2026 19:33

No one disagrees with healthcare, workers’ rights, state education. It’s disingenuous to make out that the right is against these things.

But there has to be a limit to the extent of these and rights need to be balanced with responsibilities.

NHS is a national health service, not an international one. The right is not racist for insisting that medical tourism should not be tolerated.

The right is not unreasonable to insisting that employment legislation that actually leads to higher unemployment is stupidity and self harm. Of course a baseline of rights is essential. What good is further legislation if it actually leads to a weaker economy and more people losing their jobs. You can’t eat workers rights or use them to keep you warm in the winter.

State education is a good thing, but why penalized private education. If anything, private education takes the burden off the state system. It is politics of envy and frankly small minded to try and penalize this stuff rather than driving the economy forward so everyone has more.

Why is the left all about small minded, bitterness? And hatred of people who no power all the free things they want.

Bless you for proving the point so very quickly!

Bless you for being such a stereotypical Farage supporter.

Not everyone is a Labour supporter I might add.

5128gap · 09/05/2026 19:39

I'm left wing. So are my adult kids, lots of my friends and most of my extended family across 4 generations.
Some of us are cool. Some of us, like me, not so much.
Fortunately I lost the urge to signal my coolness through my politics circa 1988, after being gutted that the hot guy with the socialist worker under his arm never noticed I was reading Das Kapital on the bus.
How are the right performing their coolness these days? Putting up England flags and muttering that they don't know what the country's coming to, is it?

OneTealShaker · 09/05/2026 19:38

JazzyJelly · 09/05/2026 19:36

To be fair, Brown is now advising Starmer. I don't think it's likely to change much, but he did have significant input into very popular policies.

Equally, I don't think anyone over the age of 21 cares about what's 'cool'. The left being self-righteous is another argument. Is either side of the political spectrum anything but?

If Brown is the answer, Labour are asking the wrong question.

Northermcharn · 09/05/2026 19:37

luckylavender · 09/05/2026 19:25

Anyone fed up of the Farage disciples winning then whinging about it? It’s like Brexit all over again. You won get over it.

Who is a Farage disciple?

NHS spending increases

OneTealShaker · 09/05/2026 19:22

By getting on, do you mean equality of opportunity or equality of outcome?

If it’s the former, then that aligns fully with right leaning thinking. The left tends to believes in equality of outcome and will actively lower outcomes for everyone in the name equality. Like making everyone equally poor.

That’s not really how UK politics works though. Most people on the left aren’t asking for “equal outcomes” where everyone ends up the same or equally poor. They’re saying opportunity isn’t actually equal when your background, school, family money and postcode massively affect your chances in life.

The NHS, minimum wage, workers’ rights, state education etc weren’t about dragging successful people down, they were about giving ordinary people a fair shot instead of everything being decided by wealth and connections.

This really depends on what kind of ‘left’ you mean - I’m a centre left voter - and yes I do know a few like this but I also know tons who don’t - I’m originally from a midlands mining town but live somewhere considered quite posh now and I’m all for working class people getting on - myself included.

Yes the left are now woman hating, working class hating, country hating, just generally a hating bunch of people. Always moaning, always complaining, as usual pulling everyone down to their level.

Working class warriors, they ain’t.

Whereas Reform love women?

They want to scrap the equality act. The Equality Act makes it illegal for women to be paid less than men for equal work, meaning your right to equal pay is protected in the legislation. It also places a legal responsibility on employers to prevent sexual harassment at work and makes it illegal to fire you if you are pregnant and provides redundancy protection on maternity leave. Without Equality Act, could be refused employment simply because you are perceived to be of child-bearing age.

They want to scrap the EHCR which requires states to take effective measures against gender-based violence, prohibits discrimination based on sex, has addressed issues surrounding reproductive autonomy, including access to safe legal abortion services and reproductive healthcare, ensures workplace equality,
protects victims by ensuring that legal proceedings do not create excessive burdens of proof that discourage reporting of sexual harassment or assault.

Not to mention the ideas floated about taxing childless women more.

So so so typical. I think you'll find the bit I highlighted is the most important aspect of the quote, but it needed context. Obviously you and others like you go to this bit - par for the course, and again, brilliantly demonstrating the point. You couldn't make it up/ Oh yes, you could..

Wolmando · 09/05/2026 19:19

Well, they aren't for the working class like the old days. They can say working people as much as they want but that doesn't change anything

Marycontrarygarden · 09/05/2026 19:15

ProudAmberTurtle · 09/05/2026 18:24

I don't like Nigel Farage but the establishment is the BBC, the government, the pro diversity obsession of all the institutions that run the country and so on.

Farage is obviously not part of that.

I'm not convinced he's particularly anti establishment but the very fact that he calls out immigration shows he's not part of the establishment - which is presumably why he's got significant support

Annnnnd straight to the immigration rhetoric....I should have put a bet on it.

I was a socialist all my life.
They started to lose me when the trans nonsense started.
It's been downhill since then.

I came to realise I believe in working hard, taking care of one another, opportunity, education, freedom, looking after the vulnerable and that this fits more now with being a conservative.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not.

Plummagic · 09/05/2026 19:12

John Lydon has lived in America for 40 years ago and became an American citizen in 2013.

Nothing Reform or any of our politicians do has any impact on him.

I doubt many people give a shit what some has been pop star thinks.
