AIBU to apologise after DH barked at the neighbour's dog?

Last year the neighbour behind us got a small dog. It yaps.

Anyway DH has been complaining to me about this irritating dog ever since she got it and admittedly it is very annoying but what can you do? It’s during the day and it’s not constant.

He’s been away with work for 3 days and has come back grumpy and tired - last night he went outside to check on his plants and the dog started yapping. DH went absolutely bonkers, started running up and down the fence barking and snarling like a dog until the woman came out and hastily took her dog back inside. Mortified!! I know he was tired but Jesus he was acting like a psychopath

Hes back at work today and she’s sat outside in the sun - do I pop my head over and apologise/explain or leave it and assume we’re no longer on good terms 😬

Like it or not, you can't stop dogs barking. Approach her and have a laugh about you Husbands madness.

Of course you can. The vast majority of dogs are trained and don't run around barking all day every day.

Omg 😂 gave me a good chuckle thanks. It made me think of this guy

😂😂

The dog owner should apologise. Nobody needs that noise.

NittingNora · 25/04/2026 18:21

The sound of a barking dog drives me loopy (there's one outside now and I've had to put my earplugs in, some owners seem unbothered by the noise and therefore are slow to react to it). Better than shouting even if it seems a tad more unhinged. It's a very stressful noise for some people and we do reach breaking point sometimes. When I'm out and about I can move myself but not so easy at home.

She does take it back in though! This is what I mean we can’t complain as it’s not constant, just very regular

One thing you could consider is gifting her a Dogtra bark collar. I have 7 rescue dogs and these collars (though pricey) are the best on the market. When the dog barks the first time, the collar vibrates. When it barks a second time, the collar shocks the dog. And before everyone freaks out and says 'how cruel" you can SET the level of shock. I have mine set to what feels like a static shock from walking on carpet. I test it on my own bare skin before I put it on the dog. My dogs freak out just from the weird feeling of the vibration, so they don't even do one bark. I don't leave my dogs outside with these collars on if I leave home, I bring the dogs inside (fear of getting collar caught on something and strangling) But you will have instant silence when you put it on.

Letting a dog bark in its garden next to neighbours is antisocial behaviour on the part of the dog’s owner. Your OH did the right thing in a humorous way. How would your neighbour feel if a large dog barked non stop at her yappy one on the other side of the fence? I love dogs and I trained mine not to bark. He doesn’t even bark when both neighbours’ dogs bark on either sides of our fences. Dog’s owner needs to train her dog or keep him indoors.

henlake7 · 25/04/2026 17:12

Sounds like the husband should apologise. I think its only worth the OP talking to the neighbour if the dog barking is a real issue (meaning its left outside to bark an unreasonable amount of time).
I used to have 4 little yappy dogs in a very built up area so lots of things set them off. If they started barking they got one chance to shush and if they didnt they would be brought in. I stayed out with them as well as the time so they couldnt just kick off unattended (also never let them out at unsocial hours).

Maybe point out to hubby too that he has just 'agreed' with small yappy dog about proper barking procedures and dog probably now feels vindicated in its yappiness!!LOL😂

Watch ‘dogs behaving very very badly’.
Dogs are infinitely trainable unless you know absolutely nothing about dogs; in which case, I would argue, no one that ignorant should have responsibility for a pet with very particular needs.

Can you train a grown man not to act like a bit of a knob though?

Yes you can. You train them properly.

Harhar · 25/04/2026 08:14

Yeah don’t undermine the man. Let him bark!

Wingingit247 · 25/04/2026 08:13

Also Team DH, letting your dog constantly make noise unchecked is anti social behaviour, no wonder the poor chap snapped. He’s been away for three days working, gets back to what should be his place of peace and his sanctuary and has to put up with that. Don’t apologise, it’s undermining him, and your neighbour might have got the hint now about her badly trained annoying dog!

MyLimeGuide · 25/04/2026 08:00

Don't apologise. Surely you can train dogs to not bark constantly? All my neighbours have dogs and they rarely bark. Hopefully she will take it on board, good for DH 👏

Thegiantofillinois · 25/04/2026 07:57

This is something I've thought of doing to our neighbour's dogs. They're just let out to bark and bark and bark. There have been times, usually if I'm trying to sit in the garden after a noisy day in work, where I've wanted to go and bark at them. I've had to restrain myself to a frustrated 'shut up shut up shut up' instead.

Can't decide on how to 'vote' - he sounds like a twat, doggies do bark & may be annoying, but cannot imagine having a DH behaving like this.....

StolenTeapots · 24/04/2026 23:04

Ivr just woken the baby laughing at this. Love that he did that. Yappy dogs are so annoying

sorestomach · 24/04/2026 21:22

Lol omg that's hilarious

Harhar · 24/04/2026 21:07

Oh blimey. Scaring dogs into submission and laughing at men being dickheads. What fun!

Lokiswife · 24/04/2026 20:56

I have a yappy (& yampy!) dog that barks at everything. She wears a bark collar, that beeps & vibrates when she starts to bark, which stops her straight away. (It's not painful, myself & my kids all tried it out before it ever went near the dog!!) I don't see why my choice of psychotic, perma-shedding, fur-ball dog, should be an interruption or annoyance to my neighbours. (Payment of the fur tax)

Well done your DH 👏👏😂

My thoughts exactly! I found this hilarious! 😂

Harhar · 24/04/2026 20:50

Yeah great result if you want a lunatic for a husband.

Harhar · 24/04/2026 20:21

No, he’s done nothing wrong. Running up and down a fence line in the garden barking like a dog is really normal for a grown man. And funny too apparently. Jesus wept.

Well, it got the fucking annoying yappy dog taken back inside, so good result.

That's hilarious, Team DH all the way

Same, he's done nothing wrong. No way should he apologise, it's hilarious and if the neighbour doesn't like it, then she knows what she can do.
