To think I’ll be stuck at 16 stone forever

justmeandthedogs · 23/04/2026 06:45

I’m in the process of losing weight and since the start of the year I’ve lost about 13lbs.

But I seem to be in a loop. I’ll hit 16 stone 0.3 on the scales and then go back up to 16 stone 4, then go back down, then back up. It’s like an annoying cycle.

I eat well:

breakfast - yoghurt with berries and sometimes a drizzle of honey. On low protein days I’ll add some skyr.

lunch - something from home. Usually soup, a salad or a bit of meat with some veg.

dinner - again something prepped. Can be another big salad, cottage pie, pasta bake.

I eat 1550 calories a day, which is a deficit for my height and weight. I go to the gym twice a week (under the direction of a PT, to lift weights), try to run 3 times a week but I’m waiting on some new running shoes, and the other two days a week I’ll walk 10k steps minimum. I try to drink 4 litres of water a day at least.

my clothes fit better but the scale just won’t change 😥 do I just accept I’m stuck here?

I feel for you, OP. I have v similar difficulties despite weighing and tracking everything! My gynae told me that I need to re-set my hormones by doing a strict Ketogenic diet for 6 months or I would never lose weight- I haven’t been able to maintain that but definitely find that I have better losses when I restrict carb calories.
I found this article useful to explain the difference in calorie sources:

6 Reasons Why a Calorie Is Not a Calorie

Some believe that all calories are created equal and that the sources of those calories don't matter. Here are 6 reasons why that is completely false.

How old are you? Hormone changes in women massively affect "calories in/out" and unfortunately your body will be clinging onto carbs (wholemeal pasta and sourdough are still most definitely carbs).

Care to back this up with any evidence? How does a body "cling to carbs"?

I think the flaw in all of this is the idea of number of calories needed.

For example the NHS has a guide (very outdated from the 1950s when everyone was more active) of 2000 cals a day for women.

My normal intake now for my age and size is more like 1200 a day- 3 meals of 400 cals.

There’s no way the OP needs 1200 cals though, she’s 16 stone and exercising
she could have a 600 cal lunch, 400 for lunch and breakfast and still be fine

Empis · 23/04/2026 12:08

LillyoftheValleys · 23/04/2026 11:36

Wow- that's a pretty tetchy response OP.
You okay?

I said an avocado can be 250 cals. And?

I made the point that you shouldn't need to calorie count at all if you focus on the general principles of smallish portions of lean protein, lots of fruit, veg, bit of dairy and some nuts.

Anyway I tried to help and I'm not here to take swearing etc..

All the best.

.

OP weighs and records everything so she knows how many calories an avocado can be. She has had a LOT of snidey and disingenuous responses on this thread,

Incidentally, if swearing upsets you, you might be on the wrong website.

Nothing in that article debunks calories in/out at all!

One of the things it says is your body gets more efficient and managing with less calories. Well yes it does. So you have to reduce calories more. That doesn't mean your body is magically creating energy.

If I go into a calorie deficit now and remain so I will die.

Where did I say it did? I said that calories in and out is a massive oversimplification.

@canyon2000 apologies for digressing but total hats off to you for doing 25k steps a day!! I did 10k every day without fail in January and it helped me enormously to not feel sluggish in the winter months - but - it is v hard to maintain daily😐.

It helps that I have a very active dog! I basically have no choice!

Just for reference the British Heart Foundation has a long feature on avocado. Their nutritional guide says half a medium one = 140 cals.

That just means the avocados for sale in Tesco and M&S are smaller than the ones BHF used. I am currently tracking my food to make sure I get my 30g+ of fibre. Half an avo for me is 50-55g.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 23/04/2026 12:06

I don't think people quoting "the science" understand how specific "the science" is.

A scientific study is set up to test a theory based on an extension of existing scientific knowledge, sometimes to include anecdata. (ALL science comes from anecdata - we observed, theorise and tested to turn "chewing willow bark makes pain go away" into "willow bark contains a painkiller").

But some science is more broadly applicable than other parts. And some scientific rules overlap with other science, which varies the rules.

And we don't know all the rules.

And when a weight loss study is done, it is usually targeting just one or two of the rules we know, for a set period of time, for a cohort people who all come from different ethnicities, age backgrounds etc, or whatever else it is the study is targeting. Then some medical journalist had to put that into something pithy the public will understand and engage with, like "eat less move more".

But the scientists are still busy sciencing.

I work for a medical research charity. We're not working on pithy bullshit like "eat less move more". We're working on "here's a complete genetic and situational profile of the person with this condition and which treatments will work best for these individuals" approach.

Because pithy bullshit doesn't actually work. It's generalised PR. It's not science that helps the individual.

Wtf is wrong with cottage pie?!
it’s meat, potatoes and veg
use lean meat, don’t add loads of butter or cheese to the mash and it’s absolutely fine. Depending on the portion it could be 500-700 cals which is a normal evening meal

From the app OP uses. Sourdough, eggs, and avocado can absolutely be incorporated into a balanced, calorie-controlled diet.

Yes but you might die a lot quicker than I would even if we started at the same starting weight. Thats the point! Some bodies are just more efficient. Its actually a great advantage if we live in food scarcity. Not so much in our obesogenic environment....

VoiceFromThePit · 23/04/2026 12:02

Also, people are completing ignoring the effects hormones have on metabolism when they adhere solely to the idea of calories in calories out.

Try Berberine supplement to help manage blood sugar levels.

LillyoftheValleys · 23/04/2026 12:00

Backawayfromthesausage · 23/04/2026 11:58

Well a slice of sourdough an average slice is 140 cals. An egg 155, you said egg plural, so 300, then the avocado , a half is about 130 cals. So closer to 600 than 400 cals, assuming you’ve no butter or spread on it and don’t eat a whole avocado, at which point it’s closer to 800 cals. A large slice of sourdough as about 260 cals.

No- an egg is not 155 cals. Have a look online. Max is about 80 for large egg.

VoiceFromThePit · 23/04/2026 12:00

Your metabolism is shot.
You need to go keto to fix it.
and you should never have a low protein day.

You do not need to ever eat any carbs except a few berries every few days for the vitamin c. Eat eggs every day for breakfast (with no grain based products).

Your body can make all the sugar it needs/wants (for your cardio) from protein but it’s far better to burn your bodyfat as fuel than carbs you’ve eaten.

bythefire6 · 23/04/2026 11:59

wishingonastar101 · 23/04/2026 11:21

You need to kind off mess around with your system. So have a high calorie day then a very low one... do one day juice only.

I would not be eating cottage pie on a diet.

Ah the old calories in calories out BS. Of course its true to an extent, however its not a simple as many people like to make out (particularly on these threads). Its not a case of thermodynamics as we are not machines,

Calories are a measure of energy, fat is how your body stores excess energy.

It's not BS, it is thermodynamics. If there's less energy going in than out and no fat is consumed where is the energy to make up the shortfall coming from?.Answer there is no magic energy. It's being released from fat, there is no other source.

There is no way to know how much energy our bodies actually use (without testing) so the idea that if you weigh X amount you need X calories is all based on averages. Some peoples bodies will need far less energy in, as their system will be very efficient and function on less fuel. Body composition make a huge difference here.
On top of that, again its impossible to know how much energy one body can extract from the fuel going in. The measure of kcal is really simplistic (based on burning it in the lab - A Calorie (kcal) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius) so the idea that 100g of food = 100kcal is meaningless because perhaps my body is very good at extracting all of the energy in the food while yours is less efficient so for each 100g of food I get 100Kcal but you only get 85Kcal. Again averages.
Add in the fact that bodies can (and do) also get rid of excess energy without storing it (its not always stored as fat) and this is where hormones come into play. Some bodies will store every last drop of excess energy while some will excrete it/ burn as heat and not store as much. This is extremely complex and affected by genetics, hormones, environment and even the type of food.
Human bodies are complex, biochemically driven organisms not a combustion engine with simple thermodynamics.
While we can talk in general concepts and averages, if the OP says she is only eating 1500kcal per day and not losing I believe her. The posters telling her she is wrong and must be eating more than that are not helpful.

justmeandthedogs · 23/04/2026 11:39

Yes but actively challenging what I say I eat. I count the calories in a slice of avocado and sourdough and egg and people are going “no you’re wrong”

Well a slice of sourdough an average slice is 140 cals. An egg 155, you said egg plural, so 300, then the avocado , a half is about 130 cals. ScaryFacess · 23/04/2026 11:58

OP is it possible you're gaining muscle and this is causing the plateau?

LillyoftheValleys · 23/04/2026 11:57

OneGreenSheep · 23/04/2026 11:49

I’m sorry you’re being so nitpicked OP.

I am having eggs and avocado on sourdough for my lunch and it’s about 420 calories for me. I have this quite often for lunch or tea during the week! Half a normal sized avocado is 100 cals, not sure who is eating a whole avocado on the daily. And bread is not the devil!

Just for reference the British Heart Foundation has a long feature on avocado. Their nutritional guide says half a medium one = 140 cals.

PrinceHarrysBaldPatch · 23/04/2026 11:54

...and the fact you've lost a stone demonstrates that. But now you've plateaued and the original calculation is wrong, you need to adjust intake. You'll get used to it just as you did before.

She's only plateaued for a couple of weeks; that's pretty normal when you're losing weight the right way.

OP mentioned Nutracheck. I also use this app, and it automatically adjusts your calories for you when you weigh in. I've lost 8 stone using Nutracheck, and I also had a few frustrating plateaus. I now only weigh in once a month, and no longer notice any plateaus, which could be an idea for OP.

@justmeandthedogs Try changing the settings to also track carbs and protien and set to higher protein, and see how that goes. You'll still be able to have your sourdough, you'll just need to adjust your meals to account for it.

Overall, though, what you're doing is working; it's just not showing on the scales as fast as you'd like.

More impressed that your rings are full by 11am today!

I’ve got 7 hours on you,….

Namingbaba · 23/04/2026 11:50

If you're not losing weight eating what you're currently eating then if you continue doing the same it will likely be the same.

GottaBeStrong · 23/04/2026 11:50

If you can afford it, it might be worth getting a private test to see what your resting metabolic rate actually is.

Also, look at getting your nutrients tested as if you are deficient in anything, it is worth correcting that so that your body is working optimally.
